Chapter 1
Mollie's POV
"I, Damien Vance, future Alpha of the Silvermane Pack, reject you, Mollie Entwistle, as my mate and future Luna," Damien's voice echoed through the microphone, vibrating against the stone walls of the ceremonial hall.
The entire pack stared at me, their eyes drilling holes into my skin. I could not breathe, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, and the golden bond that had sparked between us just moments ago snapped with a physical force that made me drop straight to my knees. The public humiliation felt like hot acid in my veins, especially when Damien turned around and wrapped his arm tightly around Chloe's waist.
Chloe, my best friend since childhood, the Beta's wealthy daughter, smirked down at me from the raised platform, her eyes were filled with cruel triumph.
"She is the one who deserves the crown, Mollie, not some weak, low-ranking warrior's daughter," Damien announced to the crowd, his chin lifted high as the pack erupted into loud murmurs and mocking whispers.
I knelt there on the cold hard floor, staring at the glossy leather of Damien's boots. I had loved Damien Vance for as long as I could remember. We grew up together in the shadow of the Silvermane palace, playing in the woods and sharing secrets under the stars. Even though my parents were highly respected pack warriors with incredible military merits, I was born completely without a wolf. I lacked the supernatural strength, the sharp senses, and the healing abilities that every other member possessed. I could not even scream or howl as loudly as the rest of the pack, which forced me to accept the lowest possible rank in the territory, the status of a plain human being.
Despite my lack of abilities, Damien had always been there for me throughout my youth. He looked past my human flaws, protecting me from the harsh realities of the shifter world. We had shared our very first kiss beneath the ancient trees when we turned eighteen, and we had been dating happily ever since. Because of our deep history and my parents' high status as legendary warriors, no one ever dared to bully me to my face. I spent years watching him train, watching him grow into the powerful leader he was meant to become. Every time he smiled at me, my heart skipped a beat, and I secretly counted down the days until our twenty-first birthdays, praying that the moon goddess would bind our souls together regardless of my human blood.
I truly believed the cosmic mate bond sparking between us tonight was the ultimate proof of his devotion, a sign that we were meant to be together forever. But all of that safety, love, and protection shattered in a single second on the palace floor. The shield of my parents' merits could not save me from the burning sting of this public rejection, leaving me completely exposed to the cruel judgment of the entire pack.
He did not want a simple warrior's daughter, he wanted the status, the wealth, and the political power that came with the Beta's daughter. The love I carried for him for over a decade was crushed into dust in a matter of seconds, thrown away in front of hundreds of mocking witnesses.
"Hey, look at her, she is actually crying," a voice laughed from the front row, snapping me violently back to reality.
The harsh whispers of the crowd closed in on me from every single corner of the massive hall. I scrambled to my feet, my vision kept blurring with hot, stinging tears, and ran toward the dark corridor near the back exit to escape their pointing fingers. My hands shook so violently that I almost dropped my phone twice as I dialed my parents' number, praying they would pick up, praying they would save me from this horrible nightmare.
"Mom? Dad? Please, you have to come get me right now," I sobbed into the receiver the second the line connected, leaning my back against the cold stone wall of the hallway. "Damien rejected me in front of everyone. He chose Chloe. I can't stay here another minute, please, let's just leave the territory tonight."
"Mollie, sweetheart, calm down," my father's deep, steady voice came through the speaker, though I could hear the instant fury tightening his tone. "We are already in the truck, driving past the northern ridge to get to the assembly hall. Hold on tight, we are coming to get our girl, and nobody treats an Entwistle like garbage."
"Hurry, please, just hurry," I begged, wiping the hot tear from my cheek before hanging up the phone.
I slouched against the wall, clutching the phone tightly against my chest, every single second feeling like an absolute eternity. The distant laughter from the main hall drifted down the corridor, mocking my misery, and making the agony of waiting almost unbearable.
As I sat in the dark. footsteps echoed from the opposite end of the hallway, slow and heavy, drawing my attention away from my phone. I looked up, expecting to see my parents running through the doors to rescue me, but instead, Alpha Arthur stepped into the dim light, his face was pale and grim, and his usual arrogant posture were completely gone.
"Mollie," Alpha Arthur said, his voice unusually quiet as he stopped a few feet away from me.
"Alpha? My parents are on their way, we are leaving the territory," I said quickly, taking a step back, my instincts flashing a sudden warning signal in my mind.
"They aren't coming, child," Arthur muttered, looking down at the stone floor, his hands gripping his ceremonial robe tightly. "There was an accident on the northern ridge route. A massive truck lost control on the black ice, and your parents' vehicle went over the cliff. The pack medics just confirmed that the impact instantly killed both of them."
The phone slid from my numb fingers, clattering loudly against the hard ground as the world completely tilted on its axis.
"No, that's a lie, they were just talking to me," I screamed, grabbing Arthur's arms, shaking him desperately as my breath caught in my throat. "They were just on the phone! You're lying to me because of what Damien did!"
"I am truly sorry, Mollie, but you are entirely alone now," Arthur stated firmly, pulling my hands off his sleeves with a cold, unblinking stare.
The grief hit me like a physical blow to the stomach, ripping the air from my lungs as I collapsed to my knees beside my cracked phone.
Suddenly, the heavy palace doors at the end of the corridor swung wide open with a deafening crash, and a massive, terrifying shadow fell over my trembling body. I forced my tear-stained eyes upward to see a dark, imposing warrior I had never seen before in my life standing in the threshold, his cold eyes locked onto mine as he held my father's blood-stained silver sword.
Chapter 2
Mollie's POV
The dark warrior stepped closer, his heavy leather boots clicking loudly against the stone floor as he lowered my father's blood-stained silver sword toward the ground. My heart shattered into a million pieces right there in the hallway, the harsh reality of my parents' sudden deaths crushing the last bit of air out of my lungs. Alpha Arthur quickly stepped between us, his face tight as he ushered me away from the corridor and led me deep into the grand, imposing heart of the Silvermane Palace.
Helen, my late mother's closest lifelong friend, met us in the drawing room, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and something dark that I could not quite understand yet. She wrapped her thin arms around me, but her embrace felt cold, stiff, and completely empty of any real comfort.
"You will stay here with us now, Mollie," Helen whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she smoothed down the collar of my torn jacket. "The palace will keep you safe from the outside world, you have no one else left to turn to anyway."
"I don't want a room, Helen, I want my family back," I choked out, pulling away from her touch because the stifling air of the palace felt like a heavy golden cage closing around me.
"Your parents are gone, child, you must accept your new reality," Alpha Arthur said, his deep voice booming across the grand room as he poured himself a drink. "You are an orphan now, without a mate, without a pack rank, you will live under our roof and follow our rules."
That very night, as I sat alone in a massive, cold bedroom surrounded by towering stone walls, a fierce, silent vow hardened inside my chest. I looked at my bruised hands and swore to myself that I would never let myself be vulnerable again, I would never depend on a mate, a pack, or anyone else to protect me. If I was going to survive in this corrupted palace, I had to build my own physical strength and turn my broken heart into absolute iron.
The next morning, I threw myself into a brutal daily training routine inside the palace grounds, showing up before sunrise and leaving long after sunset. I ran until my lungs burned like wildfire, lifted heavy iron weights until my muscles screamed in agony, and struck the heavy wooden training dummies until my knuckles bled open. I poured every ounce of my agonizing pain, hot anger, and deep sorrow into pushing my body past its absolute limits every single day.
"You are going to kill yourself at this rate, Mollie," Chloe's voice drifted over from the edge of the training arena one afternoon.
I did not stop my movement, instead driving my elbow hard into the wooden target, splintering the top edge before turning around to glare at my former best friend. Chloe stood there in a beautiful silk dress, looking down her nose at my sweat-drenched training clothes and wrapped hands.
"What do you want, Chloe?" I asked, my breathing heavy, my voice completely stripped of the warmth we used to share.
"Damien is worried about you, we both are," she said, though a small, mocking smile played at the corner of her lips. "You look completely unhinged out here, hitting blocks of wood won't bring your parents back, you know."
"Tell your future Alpha that I don't need his worry, and I certainly don't need yours," I spat back, grabbing a heavy metal staff from the rack and spinning it tightly. "Get out of my way before I mistake you for a target."
Chloe scrolled loudly, turning on her heel and marching away toward the main courtyard, leaving me alone with my rage once more.
Weeks bled into months, my soft frame changing into lean, powerful muscle as I trained alongside the palace guards, refusing to speak to anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. The dynamic inside the palace grew more tense by the day, the servants scurrying down the hallways with anxious looks on their faces as heavy rumors began to spread through the corridors.
"Have you heard?" a young maid whispered to another near the palace kitchen while I stood in the shadows, washing the dirt off my arms. "The terrifying leader of the Nightshade Clan is coming here, Alpha Brian Peltz himself is arriving for urgent pack business."
"The monster who slaughters without mercy?" the other maid gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "Why would Alpha Arthur invite such a creature into our home?"
My blood ran completely cold at the mention of his name, a dangerous spark of hatred flaring up in my soul. Brian Peltz was a dominating, ruthless leader with a dark reputation that terrified the entire region, but to me, he was something much worse. I firmly believed with every fiber of my being that Brian Peltz was the cold-blooded monster who had murdered my beloved older brother, Captain Kaelen, years ago on the northern borders. My father had spent his final years swearing vengeance against that man, and now the killer was walking right into the Silvermane Palace.
"He arrives at dusk," Alpha Arthur's voice cut through the air as he walked down the corridor toward the main hall, speaking to his Beta. "Make sure the guards are positioned properly, I want no incidents while the Nightshade Alpha is on our territory."
"Understood, Alpha, the main courtyard is secure," the Beta replied.
I knew I could not control my burning anger if I saw his face, I knew I had to get away from the palace grounds immediately to avoid my brother's supposed killer. I dropped the washcloth, slipped quietly through the shadows of the back hallway, and hurried down toward the lower training grounds where the old underground passages led out of the estate.
The air grew thick, dark, and damp as I entered the narrow servant's corridor, my heart drumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I picked up my pace, running past the stone arches toward the heavy iron exit gates that led to the outer forest, desperate to escape the suffocating presence arriving at the front gates.
My boot suddenly caught against a thin, metallic wire stretched across the floor, a sharp clicking sound echoing through the darkness.
A loud, metallic crash boomed above me as a heavy iron gate slammed down into the stone grooves, locking the exit completely shut and trapping me inside the dark corridor. I lunged forward, grabbing the thick iron bars, shaking them with all my strength, but they did not budge an inch. I spun around, my eyes widening in absolute terror as a heavy, slow, predatory step echoed right behind me.
Chapter 3
Mollie's POV
My breath hitched as I pressed my back against the locked iron bars, my fingers gripping the freezing metal until my knuckles turned white. The slow, heavy footsteps stopped right at the edge of the shadows, and a massive figure stepped into the dim light of the corridor.
It was him.
Brian Peltz stood before me, his tall, dominating frame completely blocking the narrow hallway as he looked down at me with cold, predatory intensity. He wore dark, heavy leather armor, and his sharp, regal features seemed carved out of stone. The suffocating weight of his powerful alpha aura rolled off him in thick waves, physically pressuring the air around us until it became hard for me to draw a single breath.
"Let me out," I demanded, forcing my voice to remain steady even though my heart was hammering violently against my ribs.
Brian did not answer immediately, his dark eyes sweeping over my sweat-stained training gear, my wrapped hands, and the defensive stance I had automatically taken. A small, mocking twist curled his lips as he took one step closer, trapping me completely between his massive chest and the immovable iron gate.
"You are the girl who was running through the dark like a frightened rabbit," Brian said, his voice a deep, rough growl that vibrated through the stone walls. "The Silvermane palace is filled with fools, but I did not expect to find one hiding in the servant tunnels."
"I am not hiding from anyone, especially not a monster like you," I snapped, lifting my chin high, my eyes flashing with a sudden heat as I stared directly into the face of the man who had murdered my older brother, Captain Kaelen.
"Watch your tongue, little wolf, you have no idea who you are speaking to," he muttered, his cold tone clipping each word short.
"I know exactly who you are, Brian Peltz," I said, my voice thick with a mixture of raw grief and boiling hatred as I took a half step forward, refusing to let him intimidate me. "You are the leader of the Nightshade Clan, the executioner who took my brother away from my family."
Before he could respond, the heavy wooden inner doors at the end of the hall burst open, and Alpha Arthur marched into the corridor alongside three high-ranking Silvermane guards.
"Alpha Brian, we did not realize you had wandered down into the lower levels," Arthur said quickly, his face smoothing into a tight, fake smile as he looked between us. "This girl is just a low-ranking orphan, she should not be bothering you, let my guards escort her back to her quarters."
"She is not bothering me, Alpha Arthur," Brian replied without breaking eye contact with me, his gaze drilling straight into my soul.
"Come along, Mollie, let's step into the main hall where we can discuss pack business properly," Arthur insisted, gesturing toward the open doors while his guards stepped forward to clear the path.
Brian turned slowly, his massive shoulders shifting as he walked out of the narrow corridor, forcing me to follow under the watchful eyes of the guards. We stepped out into the grand, brightly lit main hall of the palace, the polished stone floors reflecting the heavy chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling.
The moment the open space surrounded us, a sudden, violent shift occurred in the air.
I stopped dead in my tracks as my lungs filled with a sudden, intoxicating scent of dark cedar wood, heavy rain, and winter frost. At the exact same microsecond, Brian froze, his entire body stiffening as his head snapped toward me, his dark pupils dilating until his eyes were almost completely black.
The brutal, undeniable snap of the cosmic mate bond slammed into both of us with an intense, earth-shattering power. It felt like a physical bolt of lightning striking my chest, sending a wave of burning heat rushing through my veins while the golden threads of the bond tried to weave our souls together.
"No," I gasped out, stumbling backward as absolute horror and hot anger flared inside my stomach, my hands flying to my chest as if I could physically rip the bond away. "No, this is a mistake, the moon goddess would never bind me to a murderer!"
"Do you think I want this?" Brian roared, his voice filled with intense, cold hostility as he stared down at me, his fists clenching so hard that his veins bulged against his skin. "A weak, broken human girl from a failed pack lineage is the last thing my clan needs!"
"Then reject me," I screamed, openly defying him in front of Alpha Arthur and the entire palace staff who had gathered in the balconies. "Reject me right now, Damien did it on the palace floor, you can do it too!"
"Silence," Brian commanded, his alpha aura flaring so violently that the guards took a collective step back, their heads bowing in involuntary submission. He looked toward Alpha Arthur, his jaw tight as he spoke with absolute authority. "I am driven by political necessity and the survival of my family lineage, Arthur. I need a Luna to secure my pack's territory, and the laws of the shifter realms are absolute."
"Brian, wait, she is a ward of my palace," Arthur argued, though his eyes darted toward the guards, clearly terrified of triggering a full-scale war with the Nightshade Clan.
"She belongs to the Nightshade Clan now," Brian stated ruthlessly, turning back to me with an unyielding glare. "I, Brian Peltz, claim you as my Luna right here on the Silvermane floor, you will pack your things and leave for my fortress immediately."
"I would rather die than go anywhere with you," I hissed, my teeth bared as I tried to strike him, but he caught my wrist in a grip of pure steel.
Before I could even shout a refusal, Brian leans down, his powerful alpha aura flaring as he whispers a chilling vow in my ear: "You will come to my fortress, little human but do not mistake this bond for a blessing-your presence is a curse that will cost us both everything."
