Chapter 3

The penthouse suite on the top floor of the only luxury hotel for miles seemed to shrink around Nikolai's volcanic fury.

He paced from one end of the wide living room to the other like a caged predator.

Outside, Oak Creek's pre-dawn was still steeped in absolute darkness, but inside the suite, designer lamps cast an artificial glow on a face sculpted from stone and fury.

He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, his white shirt's sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing tense forearms where veins pulsed with every beat of his heart.

He hadn't slept. He hadn't eaten.

From the moment Sienna had fled down that dark hallway with her daughter in her arms, what little patience Nikolai possessed had shattered.

The suite door opened with a soft click, and Yuri, his head of security and personal shadow, entered the room.

The former Russian military man, built like a tank and rarely showing emotion, carried a thick black leather folder.

"I have everything, sir," Yuri said, his deep voice echoing in the heavy silence of the room. He walked to the glass table in the center and dropped the folder with a solid thud.

It had taken less than six hours. It wasn't hard to track someone with no means to disappear.

Nikolai stopped dead. His eyes, two shards of Siberian ice, locked onto the document. He approached slowly, as if the folder were laced with poison, and opened it.

The first pages were a brutal assault on his ego.

Photographs of Sienna walking into a modest grocery store. Photographs of the girl—his little girl—playing in a public park with rusty swings.

Bank records. Overdue bills. A string of mediocre jobs: cashier, waitress, and now manager of a third-rate country club.

Nikolai turned the pages with rigid fingers, his mind processing the numbers. Sienna was living on the edge of financial ruin.

"I don't understand," Nikolai murmured, his voice hoarse from hours of disuse.

Why live like this? If her goal was his money, if she was the classic gold digger his secretary had described, why didn't she show up at his door with the press four years ago?

Yuri remained silent. His job wasn't to theorize about human psychology; it was to deliver facts. And the most devastating fact was on the last page.

Nikolai pulled it out. It was a certified copy of a state birth certificate. His eyes scanned the lines with lethal speed before stopping at the center of the page.

Name: Mila Moore.

Date of birth: May 14.

Mother: Sienna Moore.

Father: -

An insulting, empty line.

The glass of whiskey in Nikolai's left hand shattered under his grip. The sound of splintering glass and the amber liquid splashing onto the expensive carpet made Yuri step forward, but Nikolai raised a bloodied hand to stop him. He didn't feel the cut in his palm. He felt only the searing fire of betrayal burning through his gut.

He had been erased from the life of his own flesh and blood.

"She's a strategist," Nikolai hissed, throwing the bloodstained document onto the table. He forced the pieces into a narrative he could understand: betrayal.

She was far more calculating than he thought. She knew that if she brought him a newborn, he would have doubts. He would demand proof. He would insist on full control.

But to wait four years... To wait until the girl grew up, until she became his spitting image, so that no judge in this country could deny paternity... It was the perfect blackmail.

She wanted to make sure the price for his daughter would be astronomical.

Nikolai grabbed a towel from the minibar, wrapped his bleeding hand, and looked at Yuri with a coldness that could freeze hell.

"Get the cars ready. We're paying her a visit."

It was 6:30 a.m. when a convoy of three black, tinted, armored Mercedes-Benz SUVs shattered the silence of a modest neighborhood on the outskirts of Oak Creek.

The contrast between the multimillion-dollar vehicles and the cracked sidewalks, unkempt lawns, and rusty mailboxes was obscene.

The middle vehicle stopped in front of number 42. The white paint on the house was peeling, and the roof was in urgent need of repair.

Nikolai climbed out before the driver could open the door for him.

The freezing dawn air hit his face but did nothing to cool the rage burning within him. He wore a black cashmere coat over his white shirt, looking like an executioner about to carry out a sentence.

He walked up the narrow concrete path, ignoring a pink plastic tricycle abandoned in the front yard.

The mere sight of the toy sent a sharp, physical pain through his chest.

Four years of lost birthdays. Four years of first steps and first words, all stolen by one woman's greed.

He didn't bother looking for a doorbell. He raised his fist and brought three sharp, commanding knocks against the thin wooden door—as loud as gunshots in the morning quiet.

Ten endless seconds passed. Then came the clumsy sound of several locks being undone.

The door opened a few inches, held back by a flimsy security chain.

Sienna's face appeared in the gap. She was pale as a ghost, with dark circles under her brown eyes, her hair pulled into a messy bun. She wore a worn cotton robe.

At the sight of Nikolai filling her doorway, flanked by two armed men on the sidewalk, raw terror seized her features.

She tried to slam the door, but Nikolai was faster. His Italian leather boot wedged into the threshold, stopping the door like a solid wall.

"Open the door, Sienna," he ordered, his voice dropping an octave, soft but lethally dangerous. "Or I'll have my men break it down and we'll wake your daughter. Your call."

Sienna let out a choked sob. Her hands were trembling violently as she fumbled with the chain.

Nikolai pushed the door open and strode inside, forcing her back into the center of her tiny living room.

The place smelled of cheap vanilla and fresh coffee. Children's drawings were taped to the peeling walls, and folded blankets sat on a secondhand sofa.

Nikolai scrutinized it all with disdain before fixing his gaze on the trembling woman before him.

"What do you want?" Sienna whispered, wrapping her arms around herself.

Her eyes darted frantically between him and the closed door. "You have no right to be here! Get out!"

Nikolai let out a cold laugh, devoid of any humor. He reached into his coat with his left hand and pulled out the crumpled birth certificate, throwing it at her feet.

"Explain this. Why is 'Father' left blank?"

Sienna looked at the paper on the floor but didn't pick it up. She lifted her chin, trying to summon a courage she clearly didn't feel.

"It's the truth. Mila's father doesn't exist in our lives."

In a move too fast for her to dodge, Nikolai closed the distance between them. He didn't touch her, but he loomed over her, his massive frame cornering her. Sienna had to tilt her head back to hold his gaze.

"You stole my daughter!" Nikolai roared, his control finally fracturing.

The walls of the small house seemed to shake.

"You took four years of her life from me! What was your plan, damn it! Hide until you were desperate? Wait until she was old enough that I couldn't deny she's a Volkov, just to make sure your extortion check had more zeros? Tell me!"

The accusations seemed to hit Sienna physically. Her eyes flew wide, confusion and disbelief briefly pushing fear aside.

"Extortion?" she repeated, her voice shaking before hardening with a white-hot maternal fury. "What the hell are you talking about? You ignored me! You threw me away!"

"Don't you dare lie to me!" Nikolai bellowed, pointing an accusing finger at her. "You disappeared the same day you emptied your bank account! You took the money my company paid you and ran like the cowardly gold digger you are."

"I didn't leave because of your stupid money!" Sienna yelled back, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

The pain from five years ago exploded in her chest. "I tried to tell you! When I found out I was pregnant, I called your office dozens of times. I begged to speak with you!"

Nikolai looked at her with disgust and shook his head.

"That's a pathetic lie. No one blocks a call meant for me if it's important. I control everything in my world, Sienna."

"Then you didn't care!" she sobbed, pounding both fists against Nikolai's chest.

It was like beating against a brick wall; he didn't even flinch.

"Your secretary made it very clear! Elena called me. She told me you were aware of my 'pathetic attempt at pregnancy' and that if I came near you, your lawyers would destroy me. They threatened to ruin my life and take my baby! I was twenty-two years old and completely alone! I ran to protect her from you!"

Nikolai went still. The name Elena—his personal secretary, the woman he had trusted to run his life for a decade—hung in the air between them like a toxin.

For a fraction of a second, doubt clouded his calculating mind.

The desperation in Sienna's eyes was so raw, so viscerally real, it challenged every conclusion in his security file.

But the Ice Tsar had not built an empire by trusting a woman's tears. He trusted facts. And the fact was, she had hidden his daughter from him.

"Elena?" Nikolai hardened his expression, his steel walls rising again. "A rather poor attempt to shift the blame. Elena carries out my orders; she doesn't invent them. I never received a single message from you, and I certainly never ordered anyone to threaten you."

"All this—" He gestured at the miserable house "All this poverty is the product of your own cowardice and lies."

"I'm not lying!" Sienna cried, her voice tearing. "You're a ruthless monster, exactly like they said you'd be!"

"I'm exactly the monster I need to be," Nikolai replied, his voice lowering to a glacial whisper that froze the blood in her veins. "Cry all you want, Sienna. Play the victim. I don't care. Because the time for your games is over."

Nikolai stepped back and smoothed the front of his coat with methodical precision. His gaze swept past her, down the hallway leading to the back rooms.

"I've come to take what belongs to me."

Sienna felt the world spin. She stumbled into his path and flung out her arms.

"You will not take her! Over my dead body!"

Nikolai looked down at her, his blue eyes utterly without pity.

"That can be arranged, Sienna. Get ready. You have one hour before my legal team and I show you what it really means to lose everything."
