Chapter 1

Clara Hayes POV

The lobster tank hummed.

I'd been circling Morton's Gourmet Market for twenty minutes, running the same calculations. Shrimp—discounted, edges curling translucent, marked down twice. Organic eggs—not happening. The math hadn't changed since the last three times I'd checked.

Christmas Eve at Morton's was a study in American inequality. Women in cream cashmere drifted past, carts overflowing with truffle oil and imported prosciutto, diamonds catching halogen lights like tiny judgmental stars. They moved with the unhurried confidence of people who'd never once checked their bank balance before reaching for Veuve Clicquot.

I moved like someone who'd memorized hers to the cent.

My phone buzzed. Nathan.

Still at the edit bay. Big project came up. Missing you like crazy.

Triple rate though. Every dollar gets us closer, babe.

Grab something nice for dinner. Don't worry about the cost tonight. Splurge. You deserve it.

A hundred dollars materialized in my Venmo. I stared at it—this small, generous gesture from the man I'd loved for five years. It wouldn't touch the electricity bill glowing red in my inbox. It wouldn't make a dent in the mountain of "business debt" Nathan had been paying down since before I dropped out of medical school.

But I'd make it work. I always made it work.

Then a woman in a fuchsia coat dropped a jar of truffle honey into my cart.

"Here," she announced, voice carrying over the soft holiday jazz. "Let me add some cheer to your Christmas. My sugar daddy's Centurion is getting a workout today." She laughed—bright, unburdened, the kind of laugh I'd forgotten how to make. "He spoils me rotten. Said I could spend whatever I want."

She added a bottle of vintage Krug. The label alone made my stomach clench. I'd served that champagne once at a Hamptons catering gig—the host had casually mentioned it cost more than my monthly rent.

"I can't—"

"Nonsense." She waved a manicured hand. "Unlimited. Honestly, I can blow through a million in a week and he makes it back in a day. He loves seeing me happy."

She leaned closer, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper that carried three aisles over.

"And his poor girlfriend. Probably working three jobs right now, trying to pay off imaginary debts. He tells her he's struggling. It's quite the performance. Very committed to the role."

The air left my lungs in a slow, silent exhale.

Imaginary debts.

My boyfriend had debts. Crushing, suffocating, never-ending debts from his failed documentary startup. He'd been paying them down for five years with every spare dollar I earned, every night he spent "at the edit bay."

"You don't mind?" My voice came from somewhere distant. "That he has a girlfriend?"

She laughed again. "Mind? Darling, his love is with me, his money is with me, his everything is with me. What else is there? A title?"

My phone buzzed.

Hey, love. Still stuck. Might be a late one. Don't wait up.

But save me some of whatever you make. I love you. More than anything.

I looked at those four words—words I'd believed a thousand times—and then I looked at the woman in fuchsia, now examining imported chocolates.

"What's his name?"

"His name?"

"Your sugar daddy."

She smiled, secret and satisfied. "Nathan. Nathan Prescott. The Fourth, technically. Old money. Very old money. His family owns half the real estate on the Eastern Seaboard." She winked. "But don't tell anyone. He's very private. Says he doesn't want his 'research' compromised."

Research.

The fluorescent lights seemed to brighten, then dim. The lobster tank hum grew louder, filling my skull. I stood in the middle of the aisle—discounted shrimp sweating in my cart, truffle honey I could never afford, champagne that cost more than my rent.

Nathan Prescott the Fourth.

Not the struggling documentary filmmaker drowning in debt. Heir to a real estate empire. Old money.

My broke, struggling, "we'll get through this together" boyfriend.

Who'd just Venmo'd me a hundred dollars for Christmas dinner while his mistress spent his family's fortune on truffle honey.

"Are you okay?" She was looking at me now. "You look really pale."

I met her eyes. Something cold and still settled into my chest.

"I'm fine." My voice came out steady. Strangely steady. "I just remembered something. Something I need to do."

I left the cart. The shrimp. The honey. The champagne.

At the door, I paused. Turned back. The woman in fuchsia had moved on to the imported chocolates, her manicured fingers hovering over a gold-foiled box.

I pulled out my phone. Opened Instagram. Typed the name from her shopping bag tag.

Sloane Whitmore.

Public profile.

I followed her.

Then I walked out into the December cold.

Six blocks later, I sat on a freezing bus stop bench and opened her profile.

The first post hit like a blade between my ribs. A selfie from three hours ago. She wore a delicate gold necklace nestled in the hollow of her throat. Caption: "Early Christmas from Daddy P. #blessed #spoiled #MyMan"

The same day Nathan had given me a plastic hair clip—two dollars from the drugstore on Myrtle Avenue—wrapped in a crumpled napkin. "It reminded me of you. Simple. Beautiful. Real."

I kept scrolling.

December 14th. Sloane laughing, holding up that same gold necklace. "He knows just what I like."

The same day Nathan had sat at our tiny Bushwick kitchen table, head in his hands, shoulders shaking with what I'd believed were real sobs. "The investors pulled out. We're going to lose the apartment, Clara."

"Give me two hours."

She hung up.

I sat on that freezing bench, watching the holiday lights blur across the brownstones, and waited.

Seventy-three minutes later, my phone buzzed.

Not Maya. A notification.

"Who the hell are you???"

Then another. A text from Nathan.

Clara, what did you do?

I turned off notifications.

At one hundred and eight minutes, Maya called back.

"I've got everything," she said. Her voice was tight. "And Clara? You're going to want to sit down for this."

"The documentary startup? Doesn't exist. Never filed a business license. Never produced a single minute of footage. The debts he's been paying off? Transfers to an offshore account in the Caymans—one he controls. Every dollar you gave him is sitting there, untouched. He wasn't paying debts. He was building a case study."

"A case study of what?"

"Of you." Her voice cracked. "Clara, he's been documenting everything. Your schedules, your income, your medical records—Clara, he has your medical records. The miscarriages. All three of them. The world tilted.

I closed my eyes. Behind my lids, I saw Nathan's face—earnest, warm, loving. The face he wore when he held my hand after each loss. The face he wore when he told me he loved me.

"Clara? What do you want me to do with this?"

I opened my eyes. The cold December air filled my lungs. The same air I'd been breathing for five years, never knowing I was inhaling someone else's experiment.
