Chapter 1
The daughter of his first lover had a severe allergic reaction to the apple pie I made and was rushed to the hospital.
After finding out, my husband Leonard Sutton summoned me and our daughter to the hospital in the middle of the night.
In front of all the other patients' families, he had someone pin me down in front of the vomit-stained apple pie.
"If you finish eating this filthy thing you made, I’ll let go of what Sally and her daughter suffered tonight."
I refused.
Leonard leisurely lit a cigarette, then reached out and fed a peeled shrimp to our daughter, who was allergic to seafood.
Our three-year-old daughter didn’t understand what an allergy was. She only knew that the father who usually disliked her was suddenly peeling food and feeding her personally.
Delighted, she opened her mouth wide and swallowed the shrimp without any suspicion.
Very soon, red rashes spread all over her body, her lips and tongue swelled up and her eyes rolled back as she collapsed in Leonard’s arms, dry heaving non-stop. She even lost control of her bladder and bowels.
As I watched my daughter slipping into anaphylactic shock, I tearfully begged Leonard to let the doctors give her emergency treatment. But he stepped back in disgust, letting our daughter fall helplessly into her own waste.
“Now you know what heartache feels like? Do you have any idea how much Sally suffered when her daughter had a severe allergic reaction from eating your apple pie? Mary, how can you be so vicious? It was my mistake. I never should’ve agreed to let you marry into the Sutton Family in Sally’s place, bringing your child along!”
His words sent a chill through my entire body.
“Don’t you want to save your daughter? Then hurry up and eat. Once you finish, I’ll let the doctors give her emergency treatment.”
That night, I fought back my nausea and licked the filth off the floor in front of everyone like a dog.
My daughter barely survived. She was rushed into emergency surgery, fighting for her life.
For half a month straight, I waited outside the operating room again and again. My tears had long dried up and my heart felt desolate.
During that time, Leonard never came, not even once. Ever since Sally’s daughter was discharged from the hospital, he had taken the mother and daughter abroad for a vacation.
Later, I left the marriage with nothing but my daughter, who had just escaped death.
"I will return the position of Mrs. Sutton to Sally, along with Leonard himself.
——
Four million to buy out my marriage with Leonard, after that, your beloved daughter could proudly be a part of the Sutton Family with her illegitimate child. Quite a deal, isn’t it?"
I said as I stood by the hospital room window, looking down at the happy family of three below, my eyes devoid of emotion.
My mother sitting across from me trembled slightly, accidentally adding an extra zero to the check.
I reached out and took the check, some of the gloom in my heart lifted. That forty million wasn’t just buying out a failed marriage; it was severing the mistaken blood ties between me and my family, the Yale Family.
My mother shot me a glare, clearly disgusted by how easily I accepted the money.
"Your father and I have never lacked in providing for you, but you’ve always been so low-class. No wonder you’re not as likable as Sally. And, Kylie is not an illegitimate child. She’s Sally’s daughter, the precious treasure of our Yale Family."
I curled my lips into a mocking smile, ignored her words, picked up my daughter and turned to leave.
"Leonard blocked my number. I can’t reach him for now. But at the latest, during the Sutton Family banquet this Saturday, I’ll make sure he signs the divorce papers."
As I walked out of the hospital, a chill ran through me.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was a new post from Sally on her Instagram feed.
"Love is the reward for the brave. Three years ago, I wasn't brave enough and let you go. Fortunately, three years later, I found the courage and you were still waiting."
The photo she posted showed her and her daughter taking a cheek-to-cheek selfie with Leonard.
In my arms, my daughter weakly lifted her head, her eyes full of confusion.
“Mommy, why can Auntie Sally and Kylie take such pretty close-up pictures with Daddy? Didn’t Daddy say he hated taking photos the most?”
Chapter 2
Seeing the sadness on my daughter’s face, a dull ache spread through my chest.
All these years, she had never taken a single photo with Leonard because he didn’t like it. In fact, he outright hated it.
I looked again at Sally’s post. Scrolling down, every single one featured photos of her and Leonard with their daughter.
Every word, every image radiated happiness.
She even tagged me deliberately, just to make sure I saw it.
Turning off my phone, I gently patted my daughter’s head.
“Maybe it’s because... Daddy loves them.”
Leonard loved Sally. That love had been there since his first awakening to romance. It was an affection that I, the one who came later, could never truly surpass.
So even though I was married to him for three years, even though I was gentle, considerate and played the role of the perfect wife and mother, his heart had never opened to me.
“Does Daddy not take pictures with us because he doesn’t love me and Mommy?”
I opened my mouth, but no words came. I didn’t know how to tell my daughter the answer she already feared was true.
Just then, a call came in from an unfamiliar number. I answered and Leonard’s cold voice came through the receiver.
“I’ll send you a location. Go there and bring over the gown Sally prepared.”
“I’m not going.”
Leonard’s tone grew irritated. “Mary, you don’t have the right to say no.”
My heart sank. I lowered my gaze, my eyes landing on the marks beneath my daughter’s collar. It was the scars left from the emergency treatment.
Half a month ago, that night, Sally suddenly had a craving for apple pie. Leonard called me, telling me to make it and deliver it to the Yale Family.
But he never told me that Sally’s daughter was allergic to apples.
So when Sally’s daughter took the box of apple pie from me, I turned and left, without a second thought, without staying.
I never imagined that just one simple action—turning away—would make me the laughingstock of the entire upper class and almost cost my daughter her life.
Even during the two weeks my daughter was in the hospital, fighting for her life, Leonard never visited once. Not a single phone call.
He was right. My position as Mrs. Sutton was taken from Sally. And because of that, I had no right to refuse anything he asked.
The old me would never have dared to say no.
But now, I’m about to return that title of “Mrs. Sutton” to its rightful owner.
I’d already seen the gown he mentioned on Sally’s Instagram post. It was custom-made at an exorbitant price, prepared specially for tomorrow night.
Tomorrow was the Yale Family’s grand banquet. Friends, family and business partners would be arriving in droves. My father and my mother had also decided that night to officially transfer all the Yale Family’s businesses into Sally’s name.
At 3 p.m. the next afternoon, I stood at the gates of Leonard’s private residence, with gown in hand. His assistant blocked my way with a cold expression.
“Mr. Sutton and Miss Yale are busy. He gave strict orders, not to be disturbed by anyone.”
The front door wasn’t fully closed and from inside I could vaguely hear Sally’s delighted moans. Leonard’s voice, hoarse with excitement, followed, calling “honey” over and over again.
I understood. I’d grown numb to this long ago.
Ever since Sally returned, scenes like this had played out in front of me countless times. In the beginning, Leonard brought her back to the very house I shared with my daughter. The bedroom, the kitchen, the balcony, everywhere bore the marks of their late-night passion.
Eventually, I couldn’t take it and fought with him. After that, he bought this separate residence just for him and Sally to enjoy their love freely.
In a month, he spent at least twenty-five days here.
I didn't know how long I had been standing outside when the noises from the living room finally died down.
I pounded my numbed legs lightly and asked the assistant, "Can I go in now?"
He frowned, looking clearly troubled.
Judging by his expression, Leonard and Sally were probably getting ready for a second round.
Just as I was about to put down the gown and leave, Sally suddenly came out and called after me.
Chapter 3
I turned around. Though I had long grown used to their intimacy, the fresh marks on Sally’s body still made my heart ache involuntarily.
No one knew that I had once briefly loved Leonard. It was during the time I was pregnant.
During that time, Leonard had changed. He no longer treated me with disdain. He would walk over to hug me while I was reading on the sofa, gently kiss the top of my head. He’d bring me beautiful flowers or carefully wrapped gifts on his way home from work. And every night as we fell asleep in each other’s arms, he would murmur, “Mary, let’s live well together from now on.”
I had believed him.
That day, when my water broke, news came from abroad that Sally was having a difficult labor. Leonard panicked and immediately booked a flight with his parents to go overseas, leaving me alone in the hospital to give birth.
Later, Leonard came back, bringing Sally and their... illegitimate daughter.
"Mary? You're coming to the family banquet tonight, right? Mom and Dad definitely have something for you too!" Sally affectionately hooked her arm through mine and a sticky, cloying scent wafted over. I calmly pulled my arm away.
"I'm not going."
"Why? Mary, are you still blaming me and Mom and Dad for what happened in the past?" Her eyes quickly welled up with tears.
Leonard walked out wrapped in a bath towel. When he saw Sally crying, he gave me a displeased glance.
"The past was your own fault for having impure thoughts. No one else is to blame. Tonight is a big night for Sally, it's the Yale Family banquet. As Sally’s younger sister and the second daughter of the Yale Family, you have no reason not to go!"
Hearing that line again, I took a deep breath, an indescribable bitterness welling up in my heart.
"Leonard, do you know what people in the circle are saying about me now?"
The video of me with my right cheek pressed against the floor, tongue out, desperately licking apple pie mixed with vomit had been spreading like wildfire.
"They’re all saying I’m no different from a filthy dog!"
The Yale Family was holding a banquet today and everyone from the circle would be there. If I showed up now, it’d just be giving them more to laugh at.
"And Anne was just discharged today. She hasn’t fully recovered yet. I need to be with her."
Leonard froze for a moment, a complicated look flickering in his eyes.
“What they said might’ve been a bit harsh, but Mary, didn’t you bring this on yourself? If you hadn’t deliberately handed the apple pie to Kylie and caused her allergic reaction, would I have had any reason to come after you? You’ve always been lowly. After all, you even drugged your own future brother-in-law just to get into his bed. Now people are just talking about it a little and you can’t handle it?”
“And really, it was just a mild allergic reaction. Did she really need to stay in the hospital that long? You’re raising that child way too delicately.”
“Anne isn’t being delicate…”
Before I could finish my retort, Leonard cut me off impatiently.
"Enough! I’ll arrange for someone to look after Anne. Tonight is very important for Sally and I won’t allow a single member of the Yale Family to be absent!"
I fell silent.
When the car pulled up at the Yale Family residence, Leonard got out first with Sally. Their daughter, Kylie, came running out in a light green princess dress, smiling brightly.
Leonard bent down and lifted her high into the air, holding Sally’s hand as they walked forward together. They were just like a perfect little family.
I followed behind them in silence.
This was how it was always supposed to be.
Everyone gathered around to greet them. Leonard handled everything with ease and grace, with Sally by his side.
I quietly slipped into a corner, trying my best to make myself invisible. But still, someone noticed me.
