Chapter 1
When I was suffering from leaking urine and vomiting during pregnancy, Yeremiah Hoffman was playing a cherry stem knot kissing game with his female assistant at a party.
Even though I vomited until my stomach was bleeding, the man still wrapped his arms around his female assistant, clinging to her and unwilling to let her go.
On the way home, I had a car accident.
As soon as the ambulance came, I was lifted onto the stretcher, but Yeremiah stopped the medical staffs and put me down with a cold face.
"You have thick skin, so you don't need to waste medical resources."
As he spoke, he carried the scared and crying female assistant onto the stretcher.
When they arrived at the hospital, Yeremiah and the medical staffs brought the female assistant to the emergency room.
Only me, quietly walking towards the gynecological consultation desk.
"Hello, please arrange an induced abortion surgery for me."
"I don't want the baby in my belly anymore."
——
The next second after changing into surgical gown, Yeremiah angrily pushed open the door and stepped in.
He threw a ruby bracelet at my face.
"Michele, who allowed you to stuff this unlucky thing into me?"
Yeremiah did not believe in ghosts and God.
Even the lucky charm I had prayed for thousands of times was looked down and thrown into the fire.
Picking up the marriage bracelet on my body, I remained calm as I said, "It's not from me."
Hearing this, the man immediately snatched back the bracelet and eagerly put it on his wrist.
I knew, it was from his assistant, Caitlin Nolte.
I hoped to be with Yeremiah for the rest of my life.
I grabbed the man's hand as I prayed in my heart.
Under his contemptuous and wary gaze, I tied the loose knot tightly for him.
The extremely cold fingertips made him slightly lose focus.
He asked me, "Why are you wearing a hospital gown?"
I answered calmly and indifferently, "I'm going to have a minor surgery later."
His brows furrowed and he was about to scold me for pretending to be sick and weak.
The next second, I saw the nurse come in to draw blood for me.
The man opened his mouth and was about to ask the nurse what was wrong when his cell phone rang at the right time.
The man opened his mouth and was about to ask the nurse what was wrong with me when his mobile phone rang just in time.
It was a video call from Caitlin.
The girl complained tenderly that the hospital at night was so scary ....
Hearing this, the man did not even glance at me and strode out.
He bumped into the nurse, causing the needle to go off course and blood to flow out.
I groaned in pain, but the man did not even look back.
At this time, the doctor came in with a consent form for surgery.
Ignoring all the risk warnings, I signed it without hesitation.
Half an hour later ....
The surgery was successful.
I had just gotten off the operating table when I received a message from Yeremiah. [Wait for me at the hospital entrance.]
It was snowing heavily outside. I, dressed thinly, sat on a plastic stool and waited for a whole two hours.
The men did not appear.
Two nurses passed by me and laughed as they chatted about what they had seen in the emergency room.
"I've been working for so many years, but I've never seen a man who dotes on his wife so much."
"That's right. Not only did he hold her and coax her through the entire examination, but he only found a red mark on the woman's leg and he immediately used a helicopter to transfer her to a first-class hospital."
Hearing this, I opened my WhatsApp and found that Yeremiah had changed his avatar into a cartoon Nick fox wearing sunglasses.
It was a perfect match for a cartoon rabbit police officer for Caitlin's avatar.
I exited WhatsApp and clicked on the ticketing app.
Due to weather conditions, the fastest flight back home for me would be in two days.
I placed the order, paid and confirmed the ticket.
I walked out of the hospital and went home alone.
At three o'clock in the morning, Yeremiah, who went home late, opened the bedroom door and laid down next to me.
In the darkness, the man reached out to caress my pregnant belly. But I turned over and left my back to him.
He clicked his tongue impatiently, got up and walked into the bathroom, slamming the door.
We had been in love for nine years, but he had never shown any sign of unhappiness.
Chapter 2
I would be extremely anxious, chasing after him and bowing my head to plead for peace.
However, tonight, after taking a shower, the man found that I was still lying on the bed, motionless.
"Put on a show?"
Leaving this sentence behind, he left the master bedroom with a cold face and did not come again.
The next morning, I saw a red wine glass with lipstick stains on the coffee table in the living room.
I did not wake him up and ask him hysterical questions like I did before.
After frying the omelette, I just sat down at the table when I heard him woke up and said, "Don't wait for me for dinner tonight! There's a dinner party at the company."
The man opened the refrigerator and drank two gulps of ice water.
He suddenly found it strange that I neither complained to him that ice water was bad for his stomach, nor asked who was at the dinner party.
Through the kitchen glass, he frowned and looked at me.
"Michele, are you listening to me?"
After swallowing the food in my mouth, I let out a "hmm" and continued eating.
Seeing this, the man threw his black coat to me.
"A birthday gift for you."
The coat, which smelled of sweet perfume, covered my flat belly perfectly.
Under the man's gaze, I fished out a gift box from the coat pocket.
I opened the box and found a diamond ring inside.
Before I could say anything, Yeremiah snatched the ring back with a sullen face and said, "You got the wrong one. The one for you is on the other side."
The other pocket held the emerald brooch.
I only glanced at it and pushed it back to him, then politely said, "The brooch is beautiful, but unfortunately I don’t have any clothes to match it."
"Besides, it's already been three months since my birthday, so why don't you give it to Caitlin as well."
I was speechless for a while.
Yeremiah responded reluctantly, "There will be a jewelry auction in a few days. You can come with me."
That was the first time he asked me to be his female companion.
Over the past six months, Caitlin had been accompanying him to various events.
Even when they were on a yacht vacation together as childhood friends, the two of them appeared hand in hand in the group photo.
Thinking back to this, I felt it was completely uninteresting.
"No, I don't need anything."
"Are you sure?"
I nodded and said, "It's better to let Caitlin accompany you."
My sincere words were met with a sudden dark face from the man.
"Michele, go to the bathroom and look yourself in the mirror now."
"Take a good look at how ridiculous your jealous face is."
Back then, if he uttered those words, I would definitely have a big argument with him.
But right now, I was too lazy to argue even a word.
Just as I was about to get up and go back to my room, Yeremiah's mobile phone rang.
It was Caitlin's exclusive ringtone.
The girl cried and said she forgot her keys when she went out to throw away the garbage.
"What should I do, Yeremiah?"
"Little fool, stay where you are and don't run around. I'll come over and give you the key now."
After hanging up the phone, the man walked out.
I called out to him. "Yeremiah! The scarf you asked me to knit last week is already finished and hanging on the hanger. Don't forget to bring it to her."
His expression changed slightly.
His mouth moved, as if he was about to say something.
However, she sent another voice message.
Imitating a kitten meowing and asking its owner to bring a cup of milk tea when he came.
With that, he emptied the shopping paper bag hanging on the clothes hanger, put the scarf in and left with his mouth shut.
Taking a glance at the discarded baby clothes on the floor, I stood up and walked into the study.
I ignored the photo of Yeremiah and Caitlin on the mahogany table.
I reached for the safe with a clear goal.
Chapter 3
I tried to open the password with my birthday and Yeremiah's birthdays, but it failed.
I tried our marriage anniversary, it still did not work.
Until I tried Caitlin's birthday, it finally opened.
Two movie tickets were brought out as I took out my ID from inside.
It was the movie ticket stub that Yeremiah and I watched on our first date.
I tore apart the memories and threw them into the trash can.
I returned to my bedroom and started packing my belongings.
In the evening, Yeremiah called me and asked me to find someone to deliver a document for him to a restaurant.
It was snowing and windy outside, so I went out wrapped in a fur coat.
When I opened the door of the restaurant, I happened to run into Yeremiah and Caitlin drinking a toast.
Seeing my appearance, the commotion in the dining table suddenly paused.
Yeremiah looked at me with a disappointed expression.
The others looked at me with amusement, waiting for me to scream and lose my temper.
But to everyone's surprise, I was not angry.
I handed over the document to him and simply said,
"Can you please lend me your car keys? I left something in your car."
Hearing this, Caitlin took out the Porsche key from her bag, stuck out her tongue at me and said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Hoffman. I love to sleep in so much that I'm always late for work."
"So, Yeremiah simply gave me his car."
"Ms. Hoffman? Don't call her that, you little fool."
He doted on her and wiped the corners of her mouth stained with alcohol.
I followed the man's words and said, "Mr. Hoffman and I are not married, Ms. Nolte, please don't misunderstand."
After saying that, I picked up the key and turned to leave, but Yeremiah suddenly grabbed my hand and said with a strange look, "Michele, you've felt like vomiting whenever you smelled alcohol since you got pregnant. Why is it that today ...."
I was about to respond when Caitlin suddenly turned pale and hugged his arm.
"Yeremiah, she is not going to look for that pearl necklace in the car, right?"
"Um ... but the necklace has been lost by a fool like me. What should I do?"
The necklace Caitlin mentioned was a relic left to me by my grandmother.
Yeremiah comforted her softly, saying that it was just a cheap necklace and if it was lost, she did not need to take it to heart.
Hearing those words, I put down the car keys and looked at her with neither joy nor sadness.
"He's right. It's just a cheap necklace I've worn for nine years. Since you like it, I'll give it to you as a gift."
I walked out of the restaurant and was about to take a taxi when the man caught up with me.
He stuffed the packaged nourishing fish soup into my hand and said with a condescending tone, "I'll go with you for the prenatal check-up tomorrow."
I lied casually. "You got the date wrong. The prenatal checkup is the day after tomorrow."
He wanted to refute, but he saw Caitlin standing at the door of the restaurant.
He immediately turned back, took her hand and breathed on her hands to warm her up.
I watched them return to the restaurant. Although I never ate fish, I fed the fish soup to the stray cats and then went home.
That night, the man did not come back the whole night.
And I did not call him even a single time.
At five o'clock in the afternoon, I had just put on my coat when Yeremiah, who had suddenly returned home, took me into the car.
In the courtyard of the Hoffman Family, he brought me to his parents.
"Mom and Dad, this is Michele Lautner."
After years of being in love, he finally brought me to meet his parents.
But my reaction disappointed him greatly. "Uncle and Auntie, I have some last-minute matters, please forgive me for leaving first."
As soon as the words fell, Yeremiah grabbed my wrist and exerted himself secretly.
"Mom and Dad, she was just joking with you. You guys prepare dinner, I'll take her to get familiar with the environment first."
The man forcibly dragged me to the top-floor bedroom and started the so-called house tour.
