Chapter 1
On the day of the engagement party, my fiancée said she would arrive in two hours and then a news report about a newlywed wife and a strange man having sex in a car and suffering from hypoxia became a hot topic in the local search.
All the guests looked at the news and smiled without saying a word, casting strange eyes at me.
While waiting to see me laugh, my childhood sweetheart, Wilona, took out a ring to express her love to me on the spot, saying that she was willing to marry me and be the happiest wife.
I thought she was the greatest salvation in my life and I would be the unknown man behind her without asking for anything in return and build the business empire she dreamed of for her.
It was not until five years later, on the eve of a new product launch, that I heard her talking to her doctor bestie.
“You really think you can hide such a big thing as miscarriage from Garrick?”
Wilona touched her belly with a sad face. “I have to hide it even if I can’t. He didn’t know about my pregnancy from beginning to end. I wanted to have a child for Arnold, but he was too rude and the child was lost.”
“If Garrick knew that you added hormone drugs to his milk every day to cause infertility and you were pregnant with Arnold’s child, he would probably go crazy.”
Wilona smiled bitterly, “I can’t care about so many things. I just want Arnold to be happy. Everything is worth it. As for Garrick, it’s enough for me to spend the rest of my life with him.”
It turned out that my efforts over the years were just wishful thinking.
It turned out that the happy love I had always longed for was just a mirage.
In this case, I would give up.
——
“You are being so unfair to Garrick. He is so good to you. The success of your company today is largely due to his efforts behind the scenes. What kind of magic potion did Arnold give you? Why did you decide to do it? Is it worth it?”
Wilona struggled. “I don’t know if it’s worth it. As long as I see Arnold happy, I’m happy, even if I can only love him secretly. I know very well how good Garrick is to me. What I can do is to give him a large sum of money as compensation. If I can’t have children, at most I can adopt one in the future.”
Her best friend was helpless.
“It’s been five years. You’ve had five miscarriages for Arnold. If you continue like this, you will completely lose your fertility. End this bad relationship as soon as possible.”
Wilona pressed her temple with a look of disappointment.
“I know. When I give Arnold another child, I will be devoted to Garrick.”
My hand, which was suspended in the air and ready to knock on the door, trembled and retracted and the coffee in my hand spilled all over the floor.
Hearing footsteps coming from the room, I retreated to the kitchen in embarrassment.
Wilona had frequent miscarriages in the past five years and I always thought it was my fault.
I didn’t take good care of Wilona and didn’t keep our child.
For this, I blamed myself for five years and even cried secretly in the middle of the night, hating myself for being useless.
But it was not until now that I knew that she was pregnant five times, but it was not my child.
The five miscarriages were not because I didn’t take good care of her, but because Arnold didn’t take care of her body.
Those vows of love were just a beautiful dream she wove for me.
The funny thing was that I actually took it seriously.
My existence was just a cover for her to have an affair with Arnold, nothing more.
Hearing footsteps, I quickly wiped away the tears from the corners of my eyes.
“Hubby, why are you standing here in a daze? Where’s the coffee Chelsea ordered?”
Wilona frowned and stared at my back, looking a little suspicious.
I forced a smile.
“The coffee is ready, but I accidentally spilled it halfway, so I thought I’d make another cup. It’ll be ready soon.”
Chapter 2
Wilona saw my red eyes and she leaned over to hug me, staring at me.
“What’s wrong with you? You look like you’ve been crying. What happened?”
I hid the sadness in my eyes and shook my head.
“No, I just received a message from the company’s technical department saying that our car intelligent system has been developed. I’m happy.”
“Really? You’re awesome!”
Wilona was very excited and kissed me on the cheek.
“You’ve worked day and night for five years to develop this system and finally succeeded. Husband, thank you for your hard work. It’s a pity that I’m not in good health, otherwise tonight… Wait until I’m better. I’ll reward you again, okay?”
Such a reward was better off not having it.
At the beginning, she said that she was sexually apathetic and not very keen on those things.
I respected her wishes and suppressed the desire in my heart.
So every time she took the initiative to ask for a married life, I would be excited all day long.
Until now, I realized that it was just her charity for my years of loyalty.
Ironically, her indifference was only to me.
In order to safely conceive a child for Arnold, she secretly sterilized me with drugs, so that I would be completely childless.
Her best friend, Chelsea, glanced at me when she left and the sympathy and reluctance in her eyes flashed by.
If I hadn’t known their conversation in advance, I might not understand the emotions in her eyes at all.
At night, I took a shower and read a book in bed. Wilona came into the bedroom with a glass of milk in sexy pajamas.
She sat down gently and brought the milk to me.
“You are tired after reading all night. Drink some milk and take a rest.”
Looking at the light foam on the milk, I lowered my eyes and said nothing. My heart was broken.
In the past, she would make a glass of milk every night when I was reading. At that time, I thought it was her love for me and boasted to her friends about her thoughtfulness for me.
Now I realized that it was just to cover up her vicious behavior.
My hesitation made her frown.
“What’s the matter? Milk needs to be drunk while it’s hot. Have you forgotten the doctor’s advice? You have a bad stomach, so you need to drink more milk. Be good, drink it obediently.”
The cup of water pressed against my lower lip. As long as I refused, I believed that she would ruthlessly pour it down.
I looked at her eager eyes and took the milk and drank it all up like resigned to my fate.
This milk that looked sweet in the past was now just a poison that made me sad and desperate. When I thought of this, my stomach turned upside down and I couldn’t help but rush to the toilet to vomit.
Wilona followed and patted my back with great distress.
“How could this happen? Why did you vomit?”
When I looked back at her, she avoided my gaze guiltily.
Maybe she thought that my vomiting was due to the stress reaction of the hormone drugs in the milk.
I didn’t know if it was because of my mental trauma or the effect of the drugs, I had a high fever of 41° that night and I was in a daze.
Wilona was busy trying to reduce my fever, but it didn’t go down. She had no choice but to take me to the hospital herself.
But halfway through, her cell phone suddenly rang.
Seeing that familiar phone number, she slammed on the brakes without caring if I would hit my head.
“What! Arnold… He got drunk and got into a fight with someone?”
When she realized that she had let the cat out of the bag, she looked at me and saw that I had my eyes closed. She thought I was asleep and breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’ll be there right away!”
Chapter 3
After hanging up the phone, she shook me awake.
“Honey, there’s something urgent going on at the company. I have to go back quickly. You get off the car and take a taxi.”
Before I could react, she got off the car, walked around to the passenger seat, unbuckled my seat belt and helped me out.
It was more like forcing me out than helping.
Watching her get into the car resolutely, the bright red taillights completely disappeared into the night and my whole body was cold.
I made a call abroad. “Mom, Dad’s will mentioned the marriage with the daughter of the Turner family. I agreed. Please cancel my domestic identity for me. I’ll go there in three days.”
I walked more than ten kilometers with a high fever and finally fainted on the ground because of exhaustion.
When I woke up, I found that I was sent to the hospital. It was already the next day.
I was thirsty and wanted to drink water. There was no one by the bed. The nurse happened to pass by and poured me a cup of hot water.
“What’s wrong with you? You ran around with a high fever. Fortunately, a passing driver found you and sent you to the hospital. The person marked as your wife on your phone kept hanging up and then simply turned off her phone. Isn’t your wife worried about you?”
I responded to her with a bitter smile, picked up my phone and took a look and happened to see a red dot in the WhatsApp status.
I clicked it and saw that Arnold had updated his status last night.
The caption was: [Live up to the encounter. No regrets in this life.]
The live pictures in the nine-square grid were all Wilona’s smiles and frowns.
She seemed to be scolding, but her eyes were full of pampering.
The shining ring on her ring finger stung my eyes.
The comment area was even more lively.
[Arnold, aren’t you afraid that your wife will know and divorce you?”
[What nonsense are you talking about? Wilona and Arnold are true lovers.”
Arnold replied: [I have blocked her. Everyone, remember to keep my secret.]
He blocked his current wife, my ex-fiancée, Ellen, but only let me see it.
Just when I was about to quit the social software, I found that Arnold sent me a link.
I accidentally clicked in and found that it was filled with declarations of love, where the two of them expressed their feelings to each other and even said some explicit flirting.
Thousands of pictures, all of which were photos of the two of them and the photos could even be traced back to ten years ago.
They hugged and kissed and I could feel the true love between them through the screen.
I flipped through my mobile phone album and the photos of Wilona and I in the past five years could be counted on one hand.
I wanted to take a photo with her more than a hundred times, but every time the two of us appeared in the camera, she angrily slapped it away, saying that she didn’t like taking photos.
It turned out that she didn’t dislike taking photos, but that small space couldn’t accommodate three people.
I was just the poor guy who was excluded from her world.
I saved all these photos and also took screenshots of the ones Arnold posted on WhatsApp status.
Before leaving the hospital, I took a blood test to check the hormone concentration in my blood.
When I got home from the hospital, I found that Wilona had not returned. I checked the surveillance and found that she had not returned all night.
I looked at the crystal wedding photo hanging on the wall. I didn’t know when the crystal on the surface cracked, just across me and Wilona.
I took down the wedding photo and my phone rang.
“Boss, don’t forget, today is our company’s new product launch. You can’t be here without us. After all, you are the architect of the entire system.”
