Chapter 2
Aria's pov.
“Aria, wait! Please don't go” Ryder's voice echoed through the trees as I stormed away from the pack house, my heart racing faster than my feet.
I didn't stop. I couldn't. His commanding presence made my chest ache in ways I couldn't explain, and I needed space to breathe without the weight of his guilt hanging over me.
“Please just hear me out for once,” Ryder pleaded his voice closer now.
I whirled around, my eyes narrowing. “What's it, Ryder? What excuse do you have this time? To be honest, I'm not interested”.
His expression was painful, as though my words physically hurt him. “It's not like that. There's something hidden under the sun, and you don't understand what's going on”.
“Then explain it to me! Reveal the hidden light of the sun”. I demanded. “Why are you hiding things from me? I felt like I was being caught in a nightmare I couldn't even wake up from”.
My teeth gnashing as my jaw clenched, gnashing my teeth. “That's convenient”.
I turned to leave as frustration flowed through me, but his next words stopped me cold.
“Aria, I'm trying to protect you”.
“Protect me? From what exactly?”. I challenged spinning back.
Ryder hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground. “From myself,” he softly admitted.
His voice tugged within the sincerity of something inside me, but I wasn't ready to let go of my anger.
“I can't even understand your explanation. It isn't making any sense,” I said, my voice trembling. “If you cared, you'd tell me the truth”.
Before he could respond, a sudden sharp pain pierced my head, making me stumble.
"Aria!" Ryder caught me before I fell, his strong arms steadying me.
"I’m fine," I gasped, though the throbbing in my head said otherwise.
But then it happened—the vision.
Chains rattling, a massive black wolf bound by ancient iron shackles. Glowing its golden eyes with raw power its deep voice was commanding and echoed in my mind.
"Aria..."
My breathing ragged as I jerked away from Ryder.
"You scared me what’s wrong?" he asked, concern etched across his face.
"I... I saw something," I whispered. "A wolf. Bound in chains. It called my name."
Ryder's expression darkened. "What did you just say?"
"You heard me," I said, confusion and fear swirling inside me. "Why did it feel so... familiar?"
He shook his head, muttering something under his breath.
"What aren’t you telling me, Ryder?" I demanded.
He was torn, looking as if battling an internal war. “I need to speak to the pack elder,” he finally said.
“Why? And what does this have to do with me?”.
Ryder's jaw tightened..” Everything, it simply means everything”.
We made our way to the elder's hut in tense silence. The ancient wolf Shaman, Elder Thalos, sat by a flickering fire, his eyes clouded with wisdom and age.
“Elder Thalos,” Ryder greeted respectfully, “I need your guidance”.
The elder's gaze shifted to me, his expression unreadable. “Ah. The moon's chosen child,” he cryptically murmured.
“What does that mean?” I asked unease creeping into my voice.
Thalos didn't answer directly. Instead, he looked at Ryder. “You seek an answer, but you've to beware of the truth; it comes with a price.”
“I don't care about the price, name it. I will pay for it” Ryder firmly said.
The elder eyes gleamed. “The spell that binds you can only be broken by blood or betrayal”.
Ryder sniffed. “What do you mean by Blood or Betrayal?” He echoed, confusion clouding his features.
The elder solemnly nodded. “The past holds more secrets that must be faced, or darkness will consume you both.”
Ryder clenched his fist. “I don't understand; please explain better.”
“With time you'll understand,” Thalos said cryptically.
Ryder became frustrated as he turned to me. “We need to go”.
As we left the hut, my mind raced. "What spell was he talking about? And what does blood or betrayal have to do with us?"
Ryder's expression was grim. "I've no idea about this, but I swear I’ll find out."
As the night dragged near, I was alone in my room; as the vision kept replaying in my mind, it was about the chained wolf and its powerful voice calling my name.
Why did it feel like I knew that wolf?
And why did it sound so much like Ryder?
Ryder's voice echoed in my thoughts long after he left. The weight of Elder Thalos’ cryptic words pressed heavily on my chest: blood or betrayal.
What did that even mean? And why did I feel like the answers were hidden just out of reach?
The moon hung low over the treetops as I stood by the window staring at it, and its silver glow was casting across the pack lands.
The air was thick with the wild scent of the forest, but something else lingered—a tension that made my skin prickle.
The vision of the black wolf wouldn’t leave me. Those golden eyes burned with fury and desperation.
The chains bind their massive form. And its voice... calling my name as if it knew me like we were connected somehow.
A sudden gust of wind rattled the window, making me jump.
“You can't avoid this, Aria”.
I whipped around my heart racing. Ryder stood in the doorway with his face shadowed but unmistakably tense.
“You scared me,” I took a deep breath, pressing a hand to my chest.
“You’ve to be scared because something is coming that's tied to you” he gravely said.
My body shivers as his words send a chill down my spine. “What are you talking about?”.
He closed the distance between us, his gaze fierce. “The vision you had—it’s not just a dream. That wolf is real, and its fate is tangled with yours”.
“How do you know that?” I whispered, dread creeping into my voice.
Ryder hesitated, then sighed heavily. “That's because I've seen it too”.
My breath hitched. “What? When?”.
“I saw it a long time ago,” he admitted. “Before you ever joined the pack”.
My mind reeled. “So why did you keep this hidden?” I paused, my voice was soft and curious. “But you didn't tell me about this, why?”.
“Because I’m only trying to protect you,” he said, frustration lacing his voice. “But I can't just keep you in the dark anymore”.
“Then stop being vague and tell me the answer”. I demanded.
Ryder's jaw tightened. “The elders' warning, remember blood or betrayal was all about us. That wolf is bound by magic, and the key to set it free lies within you”.
"Me?" I whispered, disbelief washing over me.
He nodded solemnly. "But if you free it, there will be consequences."
My heart pounded as I met his intense gaze. "What kind of consequences?"
Ryder's voice dropped to a whisper. "The kind that could destroy everything we know."
I swallowed hard. "And if I don’t free it?"
Ryder's eyes darkened. "Then the wolf will come for you."
Why did it feel like the wolf had already started its hunt?
Chapter 3
Aria's pov.
After clenching my fist I stood in the clearing as the cool night breeze brushed against my skin; my heart raced with the determination of not feeling weak anymore.
Being humiliated by the pack causes a lot of fear and trauma. The Moon shadow pack weighed a heavy pain on my shoulders, but tonight, I was ready to change that.
As the clouds become dim the moon hangs high in the sky, casting a silver glow over the forest.
I had snuck out again, far from the pack's judgmental eyes, to train in Secret.
My muscles kept aching from the hours of punches and kicks against an old tree trunk, but I refused to stop.
"You've got this Aria, and you need to be strong," I whispered to myself, wiping sweat from my forehead. "I'm stronger than they think."
A strange warmth spread through my chest as I steadied my breathing. It was different from the usual burn of exhaustion. This was something... primal.
I could hear the rustle of leaves and the distant howl of wolves with startling clarity.
At that moment, my senses became sharpened.
"What the—?" I stumbled, gasping back as an unfamiliar energy surged through me.
My vision blurred for a moment, and then everything snapped into focus. I felt wild, powerful, and untamed.
A branch cracked behind me. I whirled around, my instincts on high alert.
“Who's there?” I demanded, my voice steadier than I expected as Whispers to myself. “Could it be Liam the mysterious stranger?”
Everywhere became silent. But I knew someone was watching. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end.
“Show yourself,” I growled, surprising myself with the ferocity in my tone.
Ryder emerged from the shadows, his dark eyes gleaming under the moonlight.
His presence always carried an intensity that unsettled me, but tonight, I wasn't intimidated.
“Training in secret again, huh?” he said, his voice smooth but edged with curiosity.
I narrowed my eyes. “What are you doing here, Ryder? I wasn't expecting to see you or are you spying on me?”.
He shrugged, leaning casually against a tree. “You make it hard not to watch when you're practically glowing with power”.
My jaw tightened. “I don't need an audience; after all, you told me I was weak.”
“I know I made such a horrible statement,” he smirked. “But you should be careful because unlocking that kind of power can attract unwanted attention”.
I stepped closer, defiance burning in my chest. I don't need your warnings; I can handle this myself”.
Ryder's gaze softened for a fleeting moment. “I'm not your enemy, Aria”.
“Then stop lurking in the shadows like one,” I snapped.
“Meaning?”. He curiously asked.
“You heard me clearly; after all, your rejection has created a lot of discoveries about myself.”
He sighed running a hand through his messy hair. “Look I get it. “You want to prove you're strong. But this—-” he gestured to me—is dangerous. Do you even know what you're tapping into?”
I hesitated. The truth was, I didn't but admitting that to Ryder was the last thing I wanted.
“Is none of your concern. I'll figure it out myself” I stubbornly said.
“You might not get the chance,” he warned. “Power like that doesn't go unnoticed”.
My frustration boiled over. “Why do you even care, Ryder? You've never cared before. So why now?”.
He looked at me, his expression unreadable. “Maybe I care more than you think”.
Silence stretched through for a moment between us; it was thick with unspoken words.
“If you care why then do you reject me? I don't even need your pity,” I said, my voice cracking slightly.
“It's not a pity, I didn't reject you intentionally. It was a mistake, it was something else”.
My heart raced, but I pushed the feelings aside. I couldn't afford distractions, not when I was finally finding my strength.
“A mistake? C'mon, save those lies to yourself,” I swiftly interjected. “Stay out of my way, Ryder,” I warned, turning to leave.
"Aria," he called after me.
I paused but didn't look back.
"Be careful with that power," he said. "It has a way of changing people."
I clenched my fists so tight with the determination of not letting his words shake me.
After walking deeper into the forest, my mind raced. Ryder's warnings echoed in my head, but I couldn't turn back now. I had tasted power, and I wanted more.
The warmth in my chest flickered again, reminding me of the dangerous energy coursing through me.
"What am I becoming?" I whispered to myself.
And why did Ryder seem so certain that I was on the edge of something I couldn't control?
The forest grew silent eerily as I moved deeper into the shadows. My breathing started, but my senses heightened.
Every step is guided by an unseen force, pulling me towards something unknown.
The strange warmth in my chest was strongly pulsed like a heartbeat that wasn't my own.
Without hesitation, I pushed through a thick cluster of trees and stumbled into a clearing that I had never seen before.
The air here is different and heavier, charged with energy with the ground faintly shimmering under the pale moonlight as if dusted with silver.
“I’ve no idea what this place is all about?” I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.
My skin prickled by the warmth in my chest flaring, and spreading through my entire body.
Then a gust of wind suddenly whipped through the clearing, carrying with it a scent that made my head spin—earthy, wild, and ancient.
My bones felt like they were stretching, twisting beneath my skin. Fear gripped me as I suddenly dropped to my knees, gasping as pain shot through me.
"No," I groaned, clutching my sides. "Not now..."
I could feel my body trembling, torn between shock and exhilaration as the transformation was coming, faster and fiercer than before.
I kept struggling to stay in control, but the beast within me roared to be set free; my teeth were champing and fighting for its liberty.
A binding light suddenly shot up from the earth as the ground beneath me cracked, encircling me in a shimmering barrier.
"What the—?" My shield and panic surged through me.
My breathing hitched as I stared at it, my heart pounding as the light began to fade, leaving behind a strange symbol that was etched into the ground—a glowing crescent moon surrounded by ancient runes.
Why did this place feel like it was meant for me? And what did the symbol mean?
Chapter 4
Aria's pov.
The moon hung high, casting a silver glow over the forest as I walked along the narrow path.
My heart raced, fueled by unease. Ryder had been distant lately, his normally confident demeanor shadowed by something he refused to share.
I couldn't shake the feeling that something dark loomed between us. My wolf stirred inside, restless and eager for answers.
As I reached the clearing near the river, I saw Ryder from a distance as he stood by the water's edge, his broad shoulders tense.
He gleaned his dark hair under the moonlight, and despite the heaviness in the air, my heart skipped a beat at the sight of him.
“Ryder,” I softly called.
He turned his sharp features softening when his eyes met mine. “Aria,” he breathed as if saying my name was both a burden and relief.
I crossed the distance between us. “I know you've been avoiding me, which I demanded of you, but there's something I want to find out.”
He signed by running a hand through his hair. “What’s it? Although It's not that simple to avoid you I kept thinking about you”.
“Then make it simple,” I insisted. “What are you hiding?”.
His jaw clenched. “It's better if you don't know”.
I stepped closer, my finger brushing against his arm. “We're supposed to be a team, remember? Whatever it is, we need to face it together”.
His eyes darkened with an internal struggle. “You don't understand, Aria. Knowing the truth can put you in danger”.
“I'm already in danger,” I countered. “Being in the dark doesn't make it any safer”.
Ryder hesitated, then exhaled sharply. “There's a curse,” he admitted. “A rival pack cast it on me at birth. It was meant to keep me from uniting with my mate.”
His words hit me like a blow. “A curse? Why?”.
He nodded grimly. “It bends me, Aria. I've spent my entire life fighting it, but now… it's stronger than ever”.
I felt a strange energy thrumming through my veins as if my wolf was responding to his confession. "Why now?"
"Because of you," he said quietly. "Being near you is awakening something in me. Something the curse was meant to suppress."
My breath caught. "Are you saying I’m your true mate?"
Ryder's gaze burned into mine. "I don’t know. But what I do know is that you’re the only one who makes the curse tremble."
I could feel the air crackling between us with high tension, I struggled to process his revelation. "Why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
"I'm doing this for our sake, that's why I wanted to protect you," he said fiercely. "If the rival pack finds out, they’ll come for you. And I can’t let that happen."
My mind raced, piecing together fragments of an ancient prophecy I had stumbled upon in the pack’s archives.
It's a power that spoke about a wolf that would rise alongside a cursed mate. And the only way the curse can be cured is by breaking ancient bonds that will reshape the future.
"Ryder, this is serious," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil within me. "I think I’m connected to your curse."
His eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
"I found an old prophecy," I explained. "It mentions a wolf with growing power—power that’s linked to breaking a curse."
He stared at me, disbelief mingling with hope. "You think that’s you?”
“I don't think so—I don't even know,” I admitted. “But I can't ignore the signs”.
Ryder's hand found mine, his touch grounding me. “This changes everything,” he murmured.
“It doesn't have to be so,” I firmly said. “I believe we can figure this out together.”
He brushed his thumb over my knuckles. “Aren't you scared?”.
“Have been scared of so many things. I confessed. “But now I'm not afraid of losing you; I only care.”
My heartache by the vulnerability in his gaze. “To be honest, I regretted ever rejecting you; I know I don't deserve you,” he whispered.
“Experience will always teach one a lesson, fate has its own choices and that's not your decision to make,” I said, stepping closer. “Aren’t you stuck with me?”.
A ghost of a smile tugged at his lips. “Maybe I'm lucky then”.
Despite the gravity of the situation, warmth bloomed between us. I leaned into him, and he rounded his arms around me, his scent enveloping me in comfort.
But as much as I wanted to stay in this moment, reality loomed like a storm cloud.
“We need answers,” I said, pulling back. There's one way to break this curse”.
Ryder's expression hardened. "And what’s that?"
I hesitated, the weight of the prophecy pressing down on me. "I need to confront whoever casts it."
His grip on my hand tightened. "That’s suicide, Aria."
"Maybe," I admitted. "But it’s the only way to end this."
Ryder's eyes blazed with determination. "Then I’m going with you."
"No," I said firmly. "You’re the one they cursed. If they see you, it’ll only make things worse."
His expression darkened. "You think I’m going to let you do this alone? It's never gonna happen we are on this together"
"Don't worry I can handle it," I insisted, even though fear gnawed at the edges of my resolve.
Ryder shook his head. "No way. We must handle this together."
I wanted to argue at first, but I knew he wouldn’t back down. His words struck through my heart, electrifying the warmth in my body.
"There's no problem about that," I relented. "But we need a plan."
He nodded. “Let's work and figure it out."
All I could see was the rustling wind that went through the trees, carrying with it a sense of foreboding.
"Ryder," I said softly. "What if the prophecy is wrong? What if the curse can't be broken?”
His gaze was unwavering. “Then we'll find another way. I'm not giving up on us, Aria”.
His words filled me with both hope and dread. The path ahead was uncertain and the danger lurked at every turn.
But one thing was clear to me, a reminder of the fact that we were in this together.
I couldn't shake the questions that lingered in my mind as the ethereality of the moonlight bathed us in his glow.
Would love be enough to break the curse, or were we destined to be torn apart by forces beyond our control?
