Chapter 3
Sven Walter, Alex's brother, was confused.
I got up in a disheveled state, watching Alex's resolute figure leave. My in-laws shot me a side glance, muttering that I could not even control my man. His relatives' eyes were full of mockery.
Only my best friend, my one and only family, rushed to the stage, crying, and pulled me away.
"Mia, this is too much. You shouldn't marry him!"
In the end, I put the ring that belonged to me on my ring finger, then tossed his ring aside carelessly.
After the unpleasant wedding banquet, I drank myself into a stupor, venting to my best friend.
"He planned the whole wedding—the invitation, the venue set up, the wedding rings. How could he not love me?"
My best friend sent me home.
I was restless, scrolling through my phone, when I saw a story post from Susan. She was holding a pair of bony hands with a heart drawn on them.
"I'm so grateful to have met such a great childhood friend. I've survived at the hands of the kidnappers again. He promised to always be by my side."
At that moment, I finally realized that the client Alex kept talking about, the one he would rather leave the wedding to protect, was Susan.
I called Alex, but all I heard was his mockery.
"Do you really want to get married that badly, Mia? Can't you live without a man? Stop bothering me, or I'll never come home again."
This morning, as he wished, I packed my suitcase and went to the lawyer to pick up the divorce agreement, signing my name on it.
Just as I was about to return the agreement, I was kidnapped by these two bastards.
The car stopped in front of a desolate, abandoned warehouse. One of the thugs saw my displeasure, sneered and spat his chewing gum at my face.
"A bride in her wedding dress, huh? This is the first time I've kidnapped a bride. Your husband must be looking all over for you, huh? So exciting!"
I had not even had time to change out of the wedding dress.
A bitter smile appeared on my face—he would never look for me; he was already sitting comfortably with his childhood crush carefreely.
Before I could say anything, I was roughly shoved out of the car and dragged into the warehouse.
"What do you want? Let me go, and I can get you the money; if it's power, I—"
"Shut up. I don't want anything. I just want—your life."
The mask was removed, revealing a familiar face.
This face looked remarkably like Susan's.
He approached me with a taser in hand, his laughter uncontainable.
"Why are you trying to steal my sister's man? He doesn't love you at all!
"You are in a world of pain!"
His accomplice shoved a sock into my mouth, its sour smell making me gag.
Then came the excruciating pain from every part of my body. They knocked me out with the taser, then woke me up by splashing ice-cold water on me.
Next, he gouged out my eyes with a small dagger, then hit my mouth repeatedly with an iron rod.
The exposed nerves in my teeth were stimulated by the cold water, causing excruciating pain.
I was engulfed by intense pain, my hands gripping the weeds so tightly that I did not even feel my nails digging into my palms.
The long torment continued, until two hours later, I finally stopped breathing in defiance.
Chapter 4
"Jon, she's dead. We should leave quickly before the bodyguards catch up."
Soon after, Alex received a text reminder from across the city.
Perhaps because of the brutal death, my soul actually travelled through the internet and appeared beside Alex.
At that moment, he was holding Susan and gently comforting her.
"I would have been taken advantage of by those bad guys today if it weren't for you, Alex."
Alex, content, touched her face, and replied with a sweet voice, "I promised I'd be there whenever you need me. How could I let you be in danger?"
A soul has no heartbeat, but I could clearly feel a sharp pain in my chest as I watched this scene.
He had once made the same promise to me.
As I watched them act so intimately, the bodyguards behind us muttered in dissatisfaction, "Captain, the commander called two hours ago and ordered us to rescue a kidnapped client. Should we head to the car and continue?
"And your wife was kidnapped too? Should we go check on her too?"
Alex was annoyed by the continuous questions. He shot a displeased glance at the deputy captain.
"Are you questioning my decision? I'm the captain now. If you want to do your own thing, leave without me."
Enraged by Alex's retort, the deputy captain extended his fist, but the bodyguards behind him quickly stopped him.
"No matter what, she's our client. If we don't go, the commander will blame us. Plus, your wife—"
After considering for a moment, Alex princess-carried Susan and walked toward the car.
"I wouldn't come even if it was her."
"How many times has she been kidnapped this month? Twenty-seven or twenty-eight? Ridiculous. It's always the same thugs. Captain must be blind, can't he see this little girl flirting with him?"
"Can he stop dragging us into his love affairs? We've been travelling all over this month, yet not a single result. Don't even know what's going on with his wife."
Listening to the team's complaints, Susan pouted as she was wronged.
Alex gently rubbed her face with his nose, then loudly declared, "Don't worry about Mia, she is a Taekwondo black belt. She would never have been kidnapped with her skills—unless it's all a show. You guys couldn't even beat her!"
As soon as he said this, the chatter behind us immediately ceased.
I smiled bitterly. I was alone and bound; I had no way to fight back. Susan lied to him twenty-eight times, and he happily went along with it.
As his wife, I only asked him once, but he was cold and indifferent to me.
I wondered if things would have turned out differently if I had woken up earlier in this relationship.
On the way, Alex saw the text I had sent.
He immediately proudly raised his phone to show the deputy captain.
"See? I told you it was all a setup. I bet she's at her best friend's house now, waiting for me to beg for forgiveness."
When the deputy captain did not respond, Alex smugly sent me another message, a smile barely contained at the corner of his mouth.
"I was wrong. Come back early tonight, and I'll make you a big meal myself."
Just as the message was sent, the car came to a sudden stop, causing Susan to fall out of Alex's arms and onto the ground.
"Alex, do you not want this job anymore? If you don't want to be captain, just leave. There are plenty of people who want to take your spot!"
Alex hurriedly helped Susan up, about to curse, when the commander's voice beat him to it.
The commander's face was as red as liver, and Alex dared not make a move. After settling with Susan, he quickly got out of the car.
"What's wrong, Commander?"
"I notified you two hours ago to save the client. And you guys just showed up now? Even the bodyguards from the neighboring city have already arrived! Were you sitting in the car eating your own shit? The client was cruelly killed by the thugs!
"No clients will ever dare to hire us in the future! You're about to lose your job!"
Alex, unconcerned, explained, "I went to rescue the other client. The young girl was almost taken advantage of by the thugs. As you said, we need to make sure the client is safe mentally and physically!"
The commander was so angry he almost had a heart attack.
In the midst of the tension, my body was carried out by the bodyguards.
Perhaps because my face had been tortured too badly, they covered me with a white cloth.
As they passed Alex, the corner of the cloth was blown away by the wind.
My wedding dress was exposed right in front of Alex.
