Chapter 1

1

It had been more than two years since I left Capaville.

My father owed a debt of 500 thousand dollars and used me to pay it off. In the end, I was offered to Yorick Turner of Capaville.

Yorick was a powerful figure from the Turner family.

He pampered me for five years, accompanying me from a young girl to a successful student.

Even though he always called me Josie, for me, it was about repaying my debts. I considered myself a servant of the Turner family.

That year, I made 2 million dollars from writing novels. After transferring 1.5 million dollars to Yorick, I broke my bank card and canceled my phone number.

Carrying a few simple clothes and taking advantage of a time when Yorick's family arranged a blind date for him, I took the remaining 500 thousand dollars, left the Turner family, and gained my freedom.

I changed my name from Jocelyn Ramos to Clare Ramos.

I hid in a seaside county town and opened an inn on the beach.

Business had its ups and downs over the years, but I made a decent amount of money.

At first, there were messages everywhere about searching for me.

I thought that since I had repaid the Turner family, Yorick was probably reluctant to lose my companionship of many years. I assumed he would stop looking for me after a while.

Recently, I felt that not so many people from Capaville were searching for me anymore.

I guessed Yorick had forgotten about me.

I was finally relieved.

It was time for me to go out, work, and socialize. I couldn't live off my savings forever.

Besides, I wanted to go home and visit.

Chapter 2

I took a train for a day and a night to return to the place where I was born.

After asking around a bit, I found where my parents lived.

They were doing well locally and were well-known, so they weren't hard to find.

I heard from people nearby that this family had a capable little daughter who found a husband from a rich family in Capaville.

The husband was very caring toward them, so the local powerful people didn't dare to offend them.

They enjoyed a lot of convenience.

All five brothers went to school and found jobs.

The three older sisters got married early, and some of them still lived at home after getting married.

Selling their little daughter didn't impact my parents enough to change their preference for sons over daughters.

That day, my parents went out shopping, and I followed them, pretending to look around.

I couldn't help laughing when I heard their conversation.

"Where on earth has that damn girl gone? Why is she running around everywhere instead of staying with the Turner family? It wasn't easy for me to find such a good family for her."

"That's right, Yorick has come to ask several times this year."

"If I knew where that damn girl went, I'd immediately tie her up and send her back to the Turner family."

"Yes, look at how good the Turner family is. They bought us a house and a car and even helped these sons find good wives. With such good people, what more can we ask for?"

After so many years away, my parents never came to see me once.

At first, I expected them to come and see me or redeem me after making money.

But gradually, I no longer had any expectations. I guessed they had forgotten they sold their daughter.

After hiding for two years, I came to see my parents whenever I had time. I didn't expect them to remember me.

I also remembered the good days I had with the Turner family.

It seemed like I couldn't go back home.

I went back to my own home overnight.

Chapter 3

After sleeping for two days, I decided to try working as a waitress in a hotel in town.

The work was simple and wouldn't attract any attention.

The hotel owner interviewed me and, seeing that I was pretty, hired me on the spot.

I had never worked a long-term job before, so this was my first experience. I didn't expect to face discrimination just for working.

"Clare, go to the front. The manager is looking for you," said a coworker, rolling her eyes at me.

When I approached, the manager was panicking.

"You've come at the right time," he said. "There's a difficult customer here. No one wants to serve her. You should go. But don't offend this lady from Capaville. She's an important customer."

I had no choice but to open the door and ask if she needed anything.

The girl opposite me was stunned for a long time.

"Why do you look familiar?"

"You must be mistaken. How could you possibly know someone from a small place like ours? Miss, what can I do for you?"

"Is your last name Ramos?" She stood up and walked around me, inspecting me in my uniform.

"I think you are. Your name is Jocelyn Ramos. Are you from the Turner family in Capaville? I once saw you at a dinner party with Mr. Turner."

"You must have made a mistake. I'm local and have never been to Capaville." I was shocked that someone recognized me and had to pretend not to know her.

"No way. Jocelyn was raised by the Turners. Someone from your small town couldn't have such an aura."

"Miss, the manager is calling me. If you don't have any instructions, I'll leave."

She waved her hand and let me go without making things difficult.

Outside the door, I confronted the coworker who had lied to me.

"What do you mean? We're colleagues. Why lie to me?"

"You look like a rich kid pretending to experience society. You act like you're one of us but you're trying to steal our jobs. How much does your boss pay you?"

I didn't bother responding and went straight to my manager to resign.

Although I felt it was unlikely, I didn't dare take the risk. If Yorick found me, all my efforts would be wasted.
