Chapter 5
"Roberta! What nonsense are you talking about?" Preston's expression was conflicted.
"We're divorced. What baby are you talking about?"
I didn't back down. "I just found out this morning. If you don't believe me, we can go to the hospital right now and check."
Kathie sneered, clutching Preston's arm tightly.
"You're divorced. Who knows whose baby that is? You're old and broken, so how dare you come to SeaBreeze Restaurant. Do you even have the money for this place?
You will embarrass yourself when you can't pay the bill."
"You!" Vickie was about to lunge at her again, but I quickly held her back.
The last thing I wanted was for Vickie to end up in a police station.
I took the menu from the waiter and said, "It's only a few thousand dollars. I have an idea. Why don't you order the same as us?"
Kathie lifted her chin. "Fine!"
The dishes came one after another, and the four of us sat at adjacent tables.
As the plates piled up, Preston's face grew darker and darker.
"Kathie, just because we have money now doesn't mean we should waste it like this."
Vickie scoffed. "Don't tell me you can't afford it?"
"Ridiculous!"
Kathie slammed her hand on the table. "Preston won ten million dollars! How could we not have money?"
Preston forced a smile and said, "Roberta, don't listen to her."
"Preston! You're divorced, and you've signed the marital property agreement. What's the point of hiding it from her?"
Seeing Kathie so smug, I decided to play along. "Preston, why don't we get remarried? Let's give our child a complete family."
"Are you dreaming? I'm pregnant too! You should just get rid of that bastard child of yours."
Hearing the words "bastard child," Preston's expression changed.
Preston slammed his fork down on the table and barked, "I'm done eating. Let's pay the bill!"
The waiter quickly approached. "Sir, the total is one hundred eighteen thousand eight hundred dollars. Will you be paying by phone or card?"
"What? How much?"
"One hundred eighteen thousand eight hundred dollars."
The waiter held up the bill, looking slightly displeased.
Vickie burst out laughing. "You can't pay, can you?!"
Preston didn't have enough money, and after scraping together what they could, the two of them barely managed to pay the bill.
"Hum, when we cash the prize, you'll see how rich we are."
Chapter 6
As soon as Vickie and I returned to the hotel, she grabbed me tightly.
"Why did you guys get divorced? Did he hit you again?"
Tears welled up in my eyes. I turned to hug Vickie, unable to hold back my tears any longer.
In my previous life, Vickie had been out of town on a business trip when I died.
She came back with gifts, only to find out that my funeral had already ended.
She couldn't believe I would commit suicide, so she kept confronting Preston over and over.
"Roberta was pregnant, and she loved her baby so much. There's no way she would kill herself!"
Vickie even quit her job to investigate my death in our community, desperately trying to uncover the truth.
In the end, Preston, trying to cover his tracks, paid off a terminally ill patient to run Vickie over with a car.
"Roberta?"
"Roberta, what's wrong? Don't cry, please." Vickie's voice was choked with emotion as she held me tightly.
"You're breaking my heart. Don't worry, I have a black belt in Taekwondo. I'll protect you."
"That bastard... Next time I see him, I'll beat him up again."
I fought back my tears, clinging to Vickie.
I thought to myself, "Don't worry, this time I'll protect you.
I'll make sure Preston pays for what he's done to us."
Vickie gently ruffled my hair, trying to lighten the mood and break the sadness.
"Roberta, now that you've won all that money, why don't you buy a house? I'm looking forward to be your guest and try some luxury life!"
I nodded with a tearful smile.
The next day, we went to the best villa community in the city.
Just as I was about to make the payment, someone interrupted us.
Kathie, hanging on Preston's arm, called out loudly, "Isn't that your ex-wife? How dare she come to look at villas?
"What's wrong with your sales office? How can you ignore real buyers and entertain broke people who can't afford anything?"
I let out a cold laugh.
"Yesterday, the two of you had to scrape together money to pay the bill at SeaBreeze Restaurant. And today, you're here looking at villas? Have you cashed in your lottery ticket?"
Kathie swayed her slim waist.
"Preston consulted a fortune teller. We'll cash in the ticket on an auspicious day. Once we do, we'll pay in full immediately.
"We're not like some people, dreaming of things they can't afford.
"What are you all standing around for? Get her out of here!"
The sales agent looked bewildered as I handed over my bank card. "I'll take this one. I'll be paying in full."
Kathie's mouth dropped open, but then she sneered. "You need to know your limits. How are you going to pay with an empty card?"
Vickie couldn't hold back anymore.
"Hey!
"You homewrecker! Roberta won two hundred million dollars in the lottery. Didn't your man tell you?"
"What?" Preston was stunned.
Kathie, full of disbelief, screamed.
"That's impossible! You'd lie about that just to spite me, right? When the card gets declined, what you'll do then?"
The sales agent quickly returned. She respectfully handed me the card and keys.
"Congratulations, Miss. You've purchased a fully furnished villa. You can move in anytime!"
Preston and Kathie fled in a panic.
In their rush, Kathie twisted her ankle.
