Chapter 1
In the third year of my illness, Ian Whitman's lover came back.
That day, I stood at his door holding the cake I made for him.
But I heard him tell Lisa Coleman.
"Lisa, you are the only one in my heart. You are the one I love!
"When she dies, we'll get married immediately!"
***
The cake in my hand fell to the ground. My friends behind me who were called over to celebrate Ian's birthday fell silent.
In the room, the conversation between the two continued.
Lisa seemed to be very upset and accused loudly.
"You said that the person you love is me! Then why did you agree to get engaged to her?
"What did you tell me before? You said you would wait for me and marry me!
"Now you're telling me that you have to wait until she dies before you can marry me? I'm afraid that I won't be able to wait until she dies!"
Ian said, "Lisa, don't say that. I am sorry. But you have to believe me. She is really dying. The doctor said she only has a year left!"
I listened to Ian's panicked voice.
I just felt my stomach churning.
It turned out that he had been waiting for the day I die.
If I died, he could marry Lisa.
But why?
I didn't get cancer!
It was because I was hit on the head by a huge truck for him and injured my head!
What were these two people doing now?
They were discussing the date of my death.
"Paisley, are you okay?"
Behind me, my best friend, Maria Davis, came forward worriedly and held my hand.
"Damn it, Ian is such a scumbag! How dare he do this to you? I'm going to go in and scold him!"
Maria was ready to rush in angrily.
I held her back and said calmly.
"Wait a minute. I want to hear more."
"But..."
I patted her hands and signaled her to stay calm.
I really wanted to know how they would arrange the time I had left.
"Ian, I don't care how much time she has left to live. I'm only giving you two choices now. You break off your engagement with her, or I leave!
"If you are a man, call her immediately to make a decision. Otherwise, I will leave the country immediately and never come back!"
Lisa threatened Ian.
Ian remained silent.
Maybe he was struggling with how to tell me this?
"Lisa, listen to me. I will find time to explain this to her. I promise. I will tell her as soon as possible.
"You know she loves me so much. Without me, she definitely wouldn't be able to survive for more than a year..."
I sneered.
How shameless this man was!
I couldn't stand it anymore!
Letting go of Maria, I pushed open the door expressionlessly and stepped forward.
Before the two of them could react, I slapped the remaining cake in my hand on Ian's face!
The cake was scattered all over Lisa.
"What are you doing? Are you crazy?"
Lisa reacted, screamed, and quickly took a tissue to wipe Ian's face.
Before I could say anything, Maria couldn't stand it anymore. Maria walked over from behind me, grabbed Lisa's hair and pulled her in front of me.
"What the fuck are you doing? Bitch. Ian begged you not to leave, but you didn't even turn back.
"Now that he's dating Paisley, you can't suppress your inner rage and come back to harass Ian.
"Why are you so cheap? The men you dated abroad couldn't satisfy you, right? Why do you have to compete with Paisley for a man?
"I'll teach you a lesson today!"
Maria dragged Lisa angrily.
Lisa collapsed on the ground, making a shrill cry for help.
"Ian! Stop this crazy woman. This woman is crazy!"
I crossed my arms and looked at Ian coldly.
"You don't dare to help her!"
He said, "Paisley, tell Maria to stop! This isn't her fault!
"Blame me. I'm sorry for you. I deserve to die!"
Ian wiped the cake off his face and seemed a little anxious when he heard Lisa's cry for help.
I said, "Why should I stop? She's such a bitch. She likes to interfere in other people's relationship so much. She should be punished.
"I remember you told me before that your mother committed suicide because someone else interfered with her relationship!
"You said you hated this kind of people the most! Why are you speaking for Lisa now?"
I sneered and attacked Ian with the most poisonous words.
"If I let Lisa go now, can you also ask your dead mother to forgive that mistress?"
Ian's face turned pale. He looked at me in disbelief, as if he didn't know me.
"Paisley! You are the mistress! Ian and I knew each other long before you. The one Ian has always loved is me! How dare you call me a mistress!"
Lisa screamed on the ground without caring about her image.
Maria slapped her hard on the face. And her fair and flawless face instantly turned red.
"Ah! You bitch, you dare to hit me! I'll fight you!"
Lisa got up from the ground like crazy and wrestled with Maria.
"Paisley! Let Lisa go!"
Ian was also enraged when he saw Lisa being beaten.
His face flushed red, and he clenched his fists.
I said, "Hey, what's wrong? Are you feeling sad? You didn't feel sad when I blocked the car for you, but you felt sad when Lisa was just slapped.
"Boring. Ian, break up! I wish you and this bitch a long and happy life together!"
After saying that, I ignored everyone and dragged the furious Maria away.
The people invited here today were all Ian's friends, not mine.
I only brought my best friend, Maria.
When I reached the door, I remembered something and turned to face Ian.
"Please return all the house, car, and gifts I bought for you within three days!
"This apartment is also mine. Please take your mistress and get out of here immediately!
"And please tell your dad that the wedding is cancelled. You don't have to wait until I die to be with that bitch. You can live together now!"
Ian followed in my footsteps, but was stopped by my words.
Lisa on the ground was stiff and looked up at Ian.
I took Maria and left without looking back.
Chapter 2
When I walked downstairs, I covered my face and cried bitterly.
Maria kept comforting me.
"Paisley, stop crying! It's really not worth it for a man like this!
"These two pieces of trash are perfect for each other!"
Maria started to curse as she spoke.
I was so heartbroken that I couldn't breathe.
Ian wasn't like this before.
Five years ago, when I first met him, he was still a poor student.
Although he was poor, he was good-looking and got good grades.
He was very popular at the university.
In the college, many girls were eager to get him.
However, he blocked my way one afternoon.
"Hello, Paisley. I'm Ian, a freshman in the Department of Economics and Management. Nice to meet you."
At that moment, you couldn't imagine my surprise and joy.
Because I never thought that he and I would have any intersection.
After knowing Ian for three months, I felt more and more that this man was pretty good.
I knew very well that he was pursuing me.
But I wanted to test his sincerity.
Ian was handsome, funny, and considerate to me.
It was hard for me not to have a crush on a boy like this.
During the time he pursued me, I felt happy.
At university, he was always waiting for me.
When I was in class, he was waiting for me in front of the teaching building.
If I didn't have classes, he would wait for me downstairs of our dormitory.
Then he took me for a ride outside the school.
I'd known for a long time that he came from a poor family.
Therefore, I chose all the popular spots, took some photos, posted them online, and I would be in a good mood.
On the weekend, several people from my dormitory and I decided to go hiking together. I jumped on the stairs to show my good mood.
But he always kept reminding me to be careful on the steps.
I laughed at him.
"Ian, I'm not a child. I won't fall while climbing the stairs."
He held me tightly with his hands and looked into my eyes seriously.
"Paisley, don't jump when you walk. It's too dangerous. I'll be sad if you fall and get hurt."
I blushed at his words.
The rest of the way, I was led by him, step by step up the mountainside.
When I reached halfway up the mountain, I couldn't hold on any longer.
"I'm so tired! Oh my god. I'm so tired! I regret coming here to climb the mountain!"
Ian shook his head lovingly and handed over a bottle of water.
"Let's take a break."
I said, "We're going to climb the mountain after the break?"
I looked at him in astonishment.
It was not because of my poor physical strength.
This mountain was six thousand feet high above sea level!
I couldn't make it halfway up the mountain anymore!
"Yes, we have to go to the church on the top of the mountain to pray."
He looked at the misty mountain top and muttered to himself.
"I want the gods to bless us."
The next moment, he turned to look at me and said gently.
"I'll carry you later."
I waved my hands repeatedly. "No way. Aren't you tired, too?"
Ian wiped the sweat off my face and looked at me. "It's okay. I can do it. Trust me, Paisley."
Later, I only managed to complete one-third of the second half of the journey that day.
Later on, he carried me up there.
I looked at the sweat dripping down his face and his determined eyes.
My heart was beating so fast it almost burst my chest.
I knew I was in love with him.
When we were almost at the top of the mountain, the schoolmates around us were all cheering for us.
I blushed and buried my head in Ian's shoulder.
From that day on, Ian and I were recognized as a couple in the eyes of our friends.
Chapter 3
When we were dating, Ian was very nice to me.
He always reminded me many things like a housekeeper.
In the summer, I didn't have to squeeze into the cafeteria for lunch. He would go and get me food despite the smell of sweat from my classmates.
We found a quiet, shaded place and ate and chatted.
I never told him what I didn't like to eat.
But after a few meals, he got the hang of my taste.
He looked serious and slightly condemned me.
"Paisley, why are you so picky about food? You should eat more meat! Girls shouldn't only eat vegetables. It's not good for your health.
"Don't deliberately avoid meat just to keep your figure. Your figure is perfect. I like it."
But I felt sweet in my heart.
He always treated everything seriously.
In my eyes, he was just a serious, sophisticated, taciturn cool guy.
Every time I had my period, I was shy and didn't want him around.
But he couldn't be driven away. He cooked for me and went to the supermarket to buy hygiene products for me.
His thoughtfulness always made me feel warm inside.
I had always been curious about what kind of family could raise such an outstanding man.
However, strangely, every time I asked about his family, Ian's face changed.
"I don't want to talk to you about my family. If you trust me, don't ask me about that in the future."
He thought I was worrying about the future.
Therefore, he told me over and over again.
"Paisley, I'm not the kind of person who relies on my family. No matter what my family situation is, with my ability, I will definitely let you live a good life in the future!
"We will graduate in two years. Give me three years. I will make enough money to marry you. I will never let you down."
I wanted to explain to him that I didn't care about his family.
I knew that his family was not rich. And it was like a sharp knife that pierced his chest from time to time.
"I know you're not that kind of girl. You're always so kind and beautiful."
Before I could say anything, Ian spoke first.
I always thought that Ian reacted so strongly because he was afraid that others would say that he came from a poor family.
But later, I found out the real reason.
