Chapter 2

On the other end of the phone, the nurse was overwhelmed by her anger.

She could only patiently explain over and over again that the system detected that the device I was wearing had lost vital signs.

If Lauren just walked to the next door and took a look, she would find that my avatar on the screen turned gray and white.

But she just left a sentence to the nurse.

"At such a critical moment, you still want to accompany Charles to act. I warn you to immediately use all the medical supplies under his name on Kevin!"

"Otherwise, I will let you leave this base tomorrow!"

My soul stood in front of her, watching the anger in her eyes almost burn away her sanity.

Heartache to numbness.

After hanging up the phone, she didn't even take the words to heart.

She turned around and personally went to collect all the supplies under my name.

Previously, in order to save Kevin, the damage to my body was irreversible.

So I decided to leave all the supplies to those in need.

I couldn't imagine at that generous time that all the life-saving supplies left behind would be wasted on a person suffering from heatstroke.

Boxes of medicines and test reagents piled up in Kevin's ward.

His face was pale, covering his mouth and coughing gently.

"Why so many things? Leave some for Charles, he must have been injured when he came back."

"You are the couple, don't have any conflicts because of me, otherwise I won't be able to bear the guilt even if I die."

The words were sincere and pleasant, but I was sitting by his bedside.

Kevin's eyes were clearly full of excitement.

Lauren squatted down to organize the supplies he could use, without looking back, she said.

"If it weren't for you giving him this opportunity, could he have been my husband?"

"It's fine that he didn't feel grateful to you. Now he's pretending to be dead and want to snatch supplies with you. He should really die!"

Kevin's heart was touched by a sentence, and he became arrogant: "Lauren, don't blame him too much. Back then, I retired early due to serious injuries while trying to save people. Actually, there were many times when I couldn't bear it."

Lauren immediately disagreed. "Feeling unbearable is a normal human reaction, but the choice you made at a critical moment is enough to prove your character."

"Charles... he simply... he is not worthy of wearing that police uniform! Disgusting!"

Kevin regretfully said: "If I hadn't saved people back then, I wouldn't have left here, and you wouldn't be with him... Fortunately, I'm back."

He looked at Lauren with passionate and direct eyes.

Completely different from my humble love.

Lauren's ears turned red instantly.

After picking the medicine he could use, he turned around and said, "You should rest well. I'm going to work. Recently, the melting speed of the polar ice caps seems to have accelerated."

Kevin's eyes were full of reluctance.

"It took me a lot of effort to see you again. In the apocalypse, I don't know whether tomorrow or accidents will come first."

"If tomorrow is the end of my life, I want to be with you in the last moments."

"Can I accompany you to work at night, Lauren?"

Hearing this, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Lauren would never allow anyone to step into the laboratory.

As her husband, I can only wait at the door.

The research in the laboratory is related to the safety of millions of people in the base.

I finally didn't have to see their affectionate eyes towards each other.

But the next second, Lauren nodded in agreement.

My soul was firmly fixed in place.

The coyness and tenderness in her eyes made me feel unfamiliar.

In the lab, Kevin really sat on the chair next to him as he said.

He watched Lauren's research quietly.

The affection in her eyes was almost tangible.

Lauren, who has always been rigorous, made three mistakes in a row.

It was not until she finally finished the previous day's sample study and was ready to take a new sample from the conveyor belt that she discovered it.

It was empty there.

Before, I used to send new glacier samples on time every day.

Let her research and refine a substance that can cool down without melting.

But starting today, I can only break my promise.

Lauren saw the empty conveyor belt, the tenderness in her eyes retreated, and was filled with anger.

She pressed the call shortcut key on my walkie-talkie.

And kept cursing in my mouth, "Charles Jackson, are you dead outside? You took the supplies without giving me any samples? What kind of police are you if you are so irresponsible?"

Unfortunately, my walkie-talkie had already been frozen deep in the glacier after one night.

She dialed several times in a row, but no one answered.

Lauren's was exhausted from being patient, and her face was full of impatience.

The walkie-talkie at the police station was set with emergency contacts.

It can be directly transferred after the police have an accident.

The number dialed by Lauren was transferred to the medical center.

It was still the same nurse who answered, and Lauren's angry voice almost overturned the roof.

"Let Charles come to see me! What's wrong with me using his protective suit to save people? If he doesn't bring the samples, it will affect my research progress and cause the loss of millions of lives and properties!"

"Do you believe that I can report him directly and have him dismissed from his position?"

Chapter 3

The nurse never expected that she, as a professor, who has always been gentle and rigorous, would go crazy.

She could only tremble and explain the fact that I had passed away.

She didn't even dare to say to let Lauren mourn.

Because she wouldn't be sad about my death at all.

Lauren's anger grew stronger after listening.

"You like acting with him? Fine, tell him that I want a divorce!"

"You can spend the rest of your life acting with him, don't get married, and don't work as a nurse in this base anymore. You are not worthy of this position!"

"What's your name? I will resign for you right now!"

The nurse was scared and sobbed by her irrational scolding.

Choking and unable to speak.

I floated aside, wanting to help the poor nurse, but feeling powerless.

Kevin walked slowly with a gentle smile, lovingly stroking Lauren's head.

It was like stroking the fur of an irritable lioness.

Lauren was stunned for two seconds, and the anger on her face was quickly replaced by tenderness.

"I made a fool of myself. I guess I'm not good at judging men...."

Kevin's eyes flashed with a meaningful look.

The next second, he reached into the pocket of my insulated suit and took out a piece of hand-carved glacier fragment.

"This is what I took off for you a second before I lost consciousness. I don't know if it can be used...."

I looked at the shape of the ice, memories of my last moments flooding back.

This is the ice block I smashed that day and was going to put it on the conveyor belt to give it to Lauren when I went back.

But I never had the chance to give it to her again.

It seems that it won't affect her experiment today.

I laughed at myself.

At this moment, Lauren held the ice block in her hand, her eyes filled with tears of emotion.

Her nose was slightly red, and her gaze at Kevin was full of admiration.

"With your weak body, why would you take such a risk?"

"The glacier has been frozen for billions of years, you must have put in a lot of effort."

Looking at Kevin shaking his head without caring.

The anger on Lauren's face grew stronger.

She turned around neatly and picked up the walkie-talkie again.

"I will treasure the sample you gave me as a gift, but this is Charles's job. If he lets personal emotions affect his work, I won't tolerate it!"

"If he can't deliver the sample today, I won't do the research. I want to see who is anxious about the research stagnation!"

I have been floating around her for a long time, and I have heard such belittlement and curses numbly.

I watched Lauren and Kevin happily dining together.

They even leaned on the chair to rest for a while.

When she woke up and saw the still empty conveyor belt, her pent-up anger erupted completely.

There was a violent fluctuation in her chest.

This time the walkie-talkie directly contacted my immediate superior.

He coldly questioned, "Your subordinate has been absent from work for a day, is this how you manage? I don't think you need to do any work anymore!"

"If Charles's sample doesn't arrive before today, just wait for my complaint letter to be sent to the leader!"

On the other end of the walkie-talkie, my boss Brian Heimo was really angry with her.

"What are you thinking? Charles died in the glacier. How can I ask a ghost to send you samples?"

"Do you think I don't want you to continue your research? No one wants to do this thankless job of sending samples. Do you think everyone is as foolish as Charles?"

There seemed to be an alarm ringing on Brian's side.

Lauren's face turned red with anger, and Kevin gently stroked her chest to calm her down.

After a moment, Brian spoke again.

"You want samples, right? Fine, I'll have someone send you samples with Charles's corpse water! Go ahead and do your research!"

There was finally a hint of panic in Lauren's eyes.

She looked at Kevin helplessly, and he gently held her hand.

"Don't be afraid. Charles must be angry and joking with you. How could he die from sun exposure? I'll accompany you. He's gone too far."

Kevin's words give her infinite strength.

The next second, anger reappeared on her face, and the two of them went to the outside of the laboratory to get the ice block with my frozen corpse.

The black box, due to the bumps, faintly sprinkled with bloody liquid.

The stench evaporated violently due to the high temperature during the day, and the air was filled with nauseating smell.

Lauren angrily stepped forward and put her hand on the lid.

With a little force, she lifted it up.
