Chapter 1
David Wilson and I had been married for five years. We respected each other and never argued.
Our relatives and friends all envied us, and our parents were proud of it.
But no one knew that after all those years of marriage, David had never slept in the same bed with me.
He had always been deeply in love with his ex-girlfriend Ella Jones, and I was just a substitute.
Marrying me was just to give an explanation to our parents.
After living my life over again, I decided not to let myself be wronged anymore.
...
As soon as I opened my eyes after my rebirth, I saw David's impatient expression.
"Mandy Moore, get off the car. Did you hear me?"
When I saw the highway outside the car window, I remembered that I was returning to his parents' home with David.
Just like in my previous life, after David received a call from Ella on the way, he immediately threw me into the emergency lane and told me to find a way to get a taxi by myself.
That was on the highway, and where could I get a taxi?
But David didn't care about that, because in his mind, Ella was the most important.
Then I walked several miles before getting off the highway...
"Watch your mouth when you get to my parents' house. Just tell them that I was back to the company for a meeting and will be there later. Do you understand?"
I gently smoothed my hair and said calmly, "Can't you explain to them yourself that you are going to the hospital to take care of your ex-girlfriend?"
David frowned.
"Mandy, what do you mean?
"Ella is waiting for me in the hospital. You know how serious her condition is and how much she needs care!
"We've been married for so many years, and it isn't the first time this has happened. Why are you throwing a tantrum at me now?"
I said coldly, "Because I'm tired of this kind of life. David, let's get a divorce."
David was stunned, as if he couldn't believe his ears.
"Mandy, what did you say? You want to divorce me?"
"Yes, compared to me, Ella needs your care more. After the divorce, you don't have to hide it and you can accompany her openly."
After saying that, I unbuckled my seat belt, got out of the car, and slammed the door.
After being stunned for a few seconds, he stepped on the accelerator and sped away.
...
David and Ella were college classmates. They had originally agreed that after graduation, they would find jobs together in the same city and then get married.
However, for unknown reasons, Ella suddenly went abroad during her senior year and had not been heard from since.
After waiting for two years, the disheartened David met me. Perhaps because he saw Ella in me, we got married.
Unexpectedly, on the wedding night, after David received a phone call, he immediately became excited and started to change his clothes.
I asked him what was wrong. He said that something happened to a friend of his, a very important friend, and he had to go see her.
I was naive at the time and asked if he wanted me to go with him.
David said no and that he alone was enough.
He was gone for a whole night, and when he came back the next morning, he told me that the friend had uremia and was hospitalized for dialysis the night before.
David was exhausted. His eyes were full of worry, sympathy and an indescribable emotion.
Silly me, I didn't realize that the emotion was love.
From then on, he went to the hospital to take care of the friend every few days and often did not return home all night.
Chapter 2
He had no interest in having sex with me. I was an introvert and had never brought it up.
Later, by chance, I finally found out that the friend was his ex-girlfriend Ella.
The reason why Ella returned home was because the medical expenses abroad were too high and she could not afford it.
In fact, she had also had a new boyfriend after going abroad, but they had broken up.
David didn't care. Ella was his first love and the most beautiful girl in his heart.
As long as she called him, no matter where or when, he would rush to her without hesitation.
In my previous life, I had always supported him silently, because we were couple.
Later, when I was helping to deliver food, the taxi I was riding in was hit.
When I was seriously injured and dying, David signed the organ donation form on my behalf without telling my parents, and both of my kidneys were transplanted to Ella...
God had given me a chance to live again. In the present life, I wouldn't let myself be wronged anymore.
When I arrived at David's parents' house, I told his parents everything without hiding anything.
It was like a bolt from the blue, shocking the two elders.
They couldn't imagine that their son, who had always been well-behaved and sensible, would do such a thing.
In order to take care of his sick ex-girlfriend, their son hadn't touched their daughter-in-law in five years!
But we still pretended to be in love.
I made it clear to his parents, "I can't live with this kind of hateful life for even one more day. I'm going to draft a divorce agreement tomorrow."
They looked at each other, not knowing how to persuade me.
Finally, his father sighed and asked his mother to call him to come back to make it clear.
More than two hours after the phone call, David showed up slowly and glared at me as soon as he entered the door.
I remained indifferent and pretended not to see that.
His father asked him harshly about Ella.
David said nothing and just sat on the sofa with a gloomy face, confronting his parents with silence.
After the two sides were in a stalemate for more than ten minutes, I couldn't stand it anymore and got up to say goodbye.
His father sighed again, waved his hand and told David to get out.
In front of the elevator, David grabbed my arm and said angrily, "Mandy, look at what you've done. You've made my parents so angry. Are you satisfied now?"
"David, you better understand that the one who made your parents angry is not me, but you." I looked at him calmly, "Just as what I said, let's get a divorce."
David's face darkened, "Remember your word. Don't regret it!"
"The thing I regret most in my life is marrying you. Wait for my divorce agreement tomorrow."
I shook off his hand and strode into the elevator.
After being stunned for a few seconds, David wanted to rush in, but I pressed the door closing button in time to block him outside.
After leaving the community, I did not go home, but took a taxi to my parents' house.
My parents were very happy to see me, but also a little confused, and asked why David didn't come along.
The older generation had more conservative ideas, and it was better not to let my parents know that I wanted a divorce for the time being, so I made up an excuse that David was on a business trip and I was bored at home, so I came back to stay for a few days.
My dad nodded repeatedly and said, "Okay, good, you can stay as many days as you want."
Chapter 3
My mother immediately took off her apron and said she was going to the market to buy food and making something delicious tonight.
Seeing them so happy, my eyes became wet.
In my previous life, I was so busy with work and family that I could only go back to my parents' home a few times a year. I almost forgot that my parents were the people who loved me the most in the world.
I secretly made up my mind that after divorcing David, I would take time to take my parents on a trip to other places and spend more time with them.
In the afternoon, David called me many times and I didn't answer.
Unexpectedly, just after dinner, he came to the door with many gifts, such as cigarettes and alcohol.
My dad was surprised, "David, Mandy said you are on a business trip, aren't you?"
David was startled at first, then explained, "I came back early, so I come to see you."
"Have you eaten yet?"
"Not yet."
My parents didn't think much about it and invited him into the house. My mom even said there were some food in the refrigerator that he could just heat up and eat.
David was just about to thank her when I picked up my bag, put on my shoes and was about to leave.
"Dad, Mom, I'm going home."
"Ah? David just got here. Just leave after he eats, okay?"
"I just go back alone and don't wait for him."
After I went downstairs, David quickly caught up with me and stopped me with his arms open.
"Mandy, have you had enough of throwing a tantrum?"
"I throw a tantrum?" I said coldly, "David, are you serious? Who is throwing a tantrum?"
David frowned, as if trying to suppress his anger, "What's wrong with you? You used to be very reasonable and always agreed with me. Why are you so rude and unreasonable now?"
I raised my head and looked at him expressionlessly.
"It's just because I figured it out.
"I used to be a fool. I only thought about our family and you, but never thought about myself.
"I thought you take care of Ella out of sympathy and kindness. Humph, I was so naive.
"David, in fact, you have always loved her deeply in your heart, and it has never changed.
"In your eyes, I am just a substitute.
"No, in fact, I am even just a tool.
"I don't want to live like this any longer.
"Since you care about Ella so much, why don't you marry her? That way you can openly take care of her day and night!
"And I will be also free. I won't have to play gooseberry anymore. Isn't that good?"
David was speechless, because every word I said hit the nail on the head, as if a sharp knife was cutting him repeatedly and making him bleed.
After a long silence, David said, "I'll give you a few days to think about the divorce, because you're too excited right now. When you calm down, we can talk about it."
I said, "There's nothing to talk about. Divorce is a done deal, and no one can change my decision."
David said, "Mandy, you know? You make me feel very strange!"
"But you make me feel endless disgust!" I looked at him coldly, "To be honest, I'm actually very grateful to you now."
David was stunned, "For what?"
"Because you didn't touch me during our five-year marriage. If I had a child with you, it would be a problem."
