Chapter 7
The following day at the Rende Hospital, while Fiona made her rounds and passed by Alice's ward, she accidentally overheard Alice expressing her grievances to Laura, making her pause in her step.
"Auntie did Fiona not save my baby because she couldn't accept that I was pregnant with Kahl's child?!" Alice wept in anguish. Viciousness flickered across her eyes.
Laura didn't notice it. She felt highly distressed just by looking at Alice's pale and haggard appearance. She held Alice's cold hand and said in a soothing tone, "Don't worry, I'll tell Kahl to get rid of that woman immediately. Moreover, you and Kahl are still young. You can have more children in the future."
Alice felt unwilling, so she deliberately asked, "Then, aren't we letting Fiona off just like that? My innocent baby…."
"Alice," Laura suddenly interrupted, her voice turning serious, "I already punished her yesterday. I understand where you are coming from. You lost your child while I lost my grandson. I'm in pain too. But it would be best if you understood my decision." She sighed.
"Fiona has lived in the Brown family for more than ten years. And my late husband had always doted on her. For my husband's sake, I can't punish her anymore. The only thing I can do is to kick her out and let Kahl divorce her."
Alice scoffed inwardly. Even with everything that happened, her position in the Brown family was still nothing compared to Fiona's. Although Kahl and Laura were indifferent toward Fiona, after all, Fiona had spent so many years living with the Brown Family. Kahl and Laura still felt some pity for her.
In the end, Alice didn't say anything, only nodding obediently at Laura. She knew it was not wise to instigate Laura to get back at Fiona now.
Outside, Fiona's eyes turned colder the more she listened to them. Then, when she remembered that she still had to go to her patient's residence, she decided not to waste her time and leave. However, just as she turned around, Fiona unexpectedly met Kahl's deep, intimidating blue eyes.
Fiona froze, not expecting that she would meet Kahl so soon.
Kahl stood near the corridor wall, his hands in his pockets. A cold aura surrounded him, so despite his handsome face, no one dared to go near him. His eyes narrowed as he stared at Fiona.
Fiona composed herself before looking at him calmly. "Hello."
Kahl didn't say anything and just examined Fiona. Though he wasn't sure if her forehead was bruised, Kahl didn't understand why he felt a sense of relief when he noticed that the swelling on Fiona's cheek seemed to subside.
For a second, Kahl was stumped for words. He didn't expect that there would come a day that he would feel worried about Fiona.
Seeing that Kahl didn't have the intention to speak, Fiona didn't intend to talk to him either. With her eyes staring ahead, Fiona calmly walked past him.
However, just as Fiona took a few steps, Kahl's slightly cold voice rang from behind, "Stop!"
Before Fiona could react, Kahl had already grabbed her arm and dragged her toward the corridor.
Annoyed, Fiona glared at him and forcefully freed herself from his clutches. She raised her eyebrows at him and asked, "Kahl, what do you think you're doing?"
"I should be the one to ask you that," Kahl hissed. His towering figure seemed so intimidating that it gave Fiona a feeling of being trapped. Gazing down at her, Kahl smirked. "So, you seem to be looking forward to our divorce?"
Otherwise, why did Fiona not have the slightest resistance when Kahl brought up the topic of divorce? Instead, she seemed especially willing and agreed to it without hesitation.
Fiona met his gaze and smiled deprecatingly, "Isn't this what you always wanted?"
Kahl didn't answer and just looked at her intensely. When he saw the seriousness and determination in Fiona's eyes, Kahl asked in disbelief, "Are you serious? You really planned to divorce me?"
Initially, Kahl suspected whether the Fiona he had spoken yesterday was merely a figment of his imagination. But now, seeing her decisiveness, Kahl only then realized that Fiona had already made up her mind on this matter. However, didn't Fiona claim that she loved him? How could Fiona be willing to let him go just like that?
Chapter 8
Hearing Kahl's questions, Fiona smiled in ridicule. Like she was looking at some stranger, she casually remarked, "Isn't that a good thing for you?"
"Good thing?" Kahl echoed, seemingly annoyed. His oppressive aura made the atmosphere seem colder.
Then, as Fiona seemed to realize something, she faintly said, "Oh, are you displeased because I quickly agreed to our divorce? If so, it's my fault. I should have acted sad and made a fuss."
Kahl said nothing. He didn't know why, but Fiona had been acting strange since yesterday, and he kept feeling a sense of unease.
"What a pity," Fiona continued, pretending to sigh, her smile devoid of emotion. "I'm not in a mood to let you see such a ridiculous drama."
Fiona had kept Kahl in her heart for so many years. Yesterday's torment made her realize it was time to let him go. After all, she had already experienced all there was to it—longings, sorrows, disappointment, heartache, and grievances. If she continued insisting on this feeling, wouldn't she be a masochist?
Moreover, if she were to divorce Kahl, she could focus her time on raising Aaron. Although he was mature for his age, Fiona knew that Aaron still longed to be with her.
So, after making up her mind about their divorce, Fiona believed that there was nothing for them to say. "I still have to go to my patient, so if there's nothing, I'll leave first," Fiona aloofly stated and left without waiting for his response.
However, she hadn't walked a few steps when Fiona heard Kahl's icy voice again accusing her, "You're so eager for our divorce, aren't you? Why? So you can finally be with that wild man?"
Fiona stopped abruptly. Her head snapped at him.
Kahl didn't wait for her response and sneered, "That lover you had six years ago?"
In Kahl's mind, only that could be the reason why Fiona was indifferent and decisive when it came to their divorce. If not for having a lover, why else did Fiona seem eager to divorce him?
Fiona's eyebrows slightly twitched. She didn't understand Kahl anymore. With a hint of anger, she questioned, "What do you mean?"
"Still playing dumb?" Kahl smiled in derision. "Right, you've been doing that for six years, so you are an expert at it."
After saying this, Kahl slowly walked toward her. He lowered his head and whispered in her ear, "But Fiona, remember this. Even if you divorce me for that wild man, you can forget being with him because, without my permission, you can never get rid of your relationship with me."
His deep, baritone voice sounded mesmerizing, as if Kahl was whispering sweet nothings to Fiona's ear.
However, his words sent a chill down her spine. Kahl was serious, and Fiona knew that he would never break them once he said something.
She had known Kahl for years and knew he could be the most formidable enemy one would hope they'd cross paths. No one could guess what he was thinking, which made him unpredictable. What was even more frightening, after what happened six years ago, Kahl became much more dangerous, and no one even dared to oppose him.
After that, Kahl walked past Fiona without bothering to say goodbye or glancing at her.
Nonetheless, Fiona stood motionless and watched his retreating figure. Worry flashed in her eyes.
Fiona wasn't that much concerned about Kahl's warning since she was never involved with another man, nor had this so-called lover. Kahl was the only person she loved in her life. What a pity that her love for him had unknowingly faded in the past six years. She didn't even realize it until she decided to let him go completely.
However, what caused her anxiety was what Kahl would do if he learned she had a six-year-old son.
Fiona took a deep breath to calm herself while trying to dismiss these thoughts.
When she glanced at her wristwatch, she remembered her appointment to see her patient, so she hurried out of the hospital.
Chapter 9
When she arrived at her destination, Fiona stepped out of the cab and gazed at the iron gate of a modern-style luxury mansion.
A handsome man stood in front of the gate from a distance, waiting for someone. After seeing Fiona and the medicine box she was carrying, he immediately knew that she was the doctor he requested from Peter Hopkins, the hospital director of Rende Hospital. Wanting to confirm his guess, he asked, "You are Dr. Smith?"
The man in front of Fiona seemed to be in his early twenties. Even though he was dressed in casual clothing and looked a little frivolous, it didn't hide his dignified aura.
Fiona bowed at him while she recalled Peter's words from earlier. After Peter called her to his office, he informed her she needed to attend to one of their VVIP patients in their house. His request came with a warning. This patient came from an influential background, and everything disclosed to her should be kept confidential.
Fiona agreed, not thinking much of it. However, when she felt Edgar staring at her with a strange look in his eyes, Fiona doubted whether this job would be as easy as she thought.
"I gotta say. You're way younger and more beautiful than I thought, Dr. Smith." Edgar praised her as though he didn't see Fiona's skeptical look.
"Thank you," Fiona modestly smiled and asked, remembering what she came here for, "How are you feeling, Mr. Clinton?"
That's right, the man standing before Fiona was Edgar Clinton, a well-known figure in Cester. Besides coming from a prominent family, he was constantly entangled in several gossips. So, it was not so surprising for Fiona to know him.
After hearing her call his name, Edgar didn't look so surprised either. He approached her and took the medical bag in her hand. While motioning her to follow him, he clarified, "I'm not your patient. It's someone else. Let's go."
Fiona looked at him in surprise. So Edgar was not her patient. Fiona felt a little intrigued. She couldn't help but wonder who could be so capable that Edgar chose to handle this matter personally.
She entered the spacious, silent villa with these thoughts running through her mind. Then she looked around but didn't see anyone—not even a maid or any employees.
Fiona quietly followed Edgar on the second floor, and when they arrived in front of the door to the master's bedroom, Edgar turned to her and said, "Wait a minute."
Fiona nodded.
"Oh, by the way, his character and temper are a little strange. So better prepare yourself," he added in a hushed voice.
Fiona had handled several kinds of patients, so she could understand what Edgar was saying. "Err… I got it," she responded.
After he took a step forward, Edgar knocked on the door, saying, "Hey, the doctor is here. Please open the door."
There was no response.
Edgar smiled sheepishly at Fiona before knocking again. "Hey."
Still, there was no response.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Edgar looked back at Fiona and explained, "He's shy."
Fiona was lost for words.
Now she was even more curious about this patient of hers.
After knocking for some time, Edgar finally lost his patience. Edgar raised his eyebrows and spoke angrily, folding his arms, "Mr. Rodriguez, please don't keep us waiting. I'll force my way in if you don't come out now! How can you treat a lovely lady and your closest friend like this!"
As soon as Edgar finished speaking, the door in front of him suddenly opened from the inside. Then, a cold and frightening voice rang out, "How many times must I say it? I'm not ill!"
