Chapter 2

Ever since Kate appeared, the relationship between John and I had been getting worse.

He always had all kinds of excuses to go to her. When I questioned him, he would scold me for being petty and unreasonable.

A month ago, we had a big fight. I proposed a divorce, and he never came back. Even when Dora was sick and hospitalized, he never called us.

Dora was a sensible child. I secretly cried behind her back, but she noticed it.

She coaxed me, saying that she would help me get back together with John.

Thinking that she was comforting me, I didn't think too much about it.

Unexpectedly, she was actually planning on it.

She knew that John loved writing. When his birthday was around the corner, Dora went to Ponset Resort to buy a pen exclusive available there.

She hid all of her plans from her. She didn't call me until she got there. I was on a business trip at that time. Fearing that it was not safe for her to go to such a remote place alone, I could only tell her to watch out.

I didn't expect that I would lose her forever after the phone call.

John's birthday was yesterday. She must have been worried that she would miss it, so she rushed home overnight. She didn't expect such a tragedy to happen.

I clutched my chest tightly. My heart was in so much pain that it felt like it was going to split apart.

At this time, Dora, who was lying on the ground, suddenly moved.

I opened my eyes wide, not daring to miss a single detail.

...

Shaking her head in pain, she seemed to realize that she was in great danger. She struggled to support her body and climbed little by little to the emergency lane, holding the pen tightly in her hand.

There was a flash of light along with the sound of a car whistling over.

"No! No!"

I screamed as the car crushed over Dora's body in the video.

When she was rolled to the bottom by a truck, her body quickly disappeared from the sight.

"Dora... My Dora must be in so much pain..."

I collapsed to the ground, crying helplessly.

With the help of the police, I got up and sat down on a chair. The truck driver walked up to me and bowed to me a few times. He then said, "I'm sorry that something like this happened, but as you can see, your daughter must have been dead when she hung up under my car..."

"And I'm a victim... I rely on driving around to make money to support my family. Now, everyone knows about it. I was slandered for drunk driving by the media, and I inexplicably became a murderer. My car became an omen..."

As he spoke, he cried. "My wife is in poor health. She is waiting for me to make money to treat her... What should I do..."

"I can't pay for your daughter's death alone. Those who have crushed her must pay as well. Yes, the most important thing is that woman. She may be the first to hit your daughter! Who knows if she did it on purpose?"

As soon as I heard his words, my body trembled. I looked up at the police, asking, "Officer, have Kate been caught?"

The policeman paused before saying, "You know the woman?"

I nodded and asked, "How's the investigation going? Did she deliberately escape after committing murder?"

"The case is currently being investigated..."

The policeman's words were interrupted by a burst of ringtone. He walked aside and answered the call. After a while, he came back to me.

I looked at him eagerly. He was silent for a while before saying slowly, "Kate has been interrogated at the police station of Yrore and has been acquitted."

...

"Is she acquitted?"

I stood up abruptly, looking agitated. "Why?"

"She insisted that she had hit someone. The incident happened at about nine p.m. There was no light at the entrance of the resort, so she couldn't see the situation on the road clearly. She only remembered that her car shook when she passed by the roadside of Ponset Resort.

"She thought she had hit a stone. Your daughter was probably squatting on the side of the road at that time. The car hooked her clothes, so she was dragged all the way to the highway. Kate didn't know what happened next.

"There were no surveillance cameras on that road. No witnesses were present at that time. We went to the scene for investigation and found nothing else."

Seeing that I was getting more and more disappointed, he continued,

"Ms. Hill expressed her willingness to compensate for the damage thus caused."

"I don't want her compensation. I just want the truth!"

I asked, stressing each word, "Are you going to let her go just like that?"

The police officer was silent for a long time before saying in a low voice, "Her boyfriend is a top lawyer. After she confessed, the lawyer answered all the subsequent questions."

"A top lawyer?"

A bone-chilling chill rose from the soles of my feet.

"Is her lawyer John Smith?"

The policeman's face changed as he said, "You know John Smith?"

I sneered and said, "John Smith is my husband I just called."

The policeman was torn. He wanted to say something but stopped on second thought.

"How about the driving recorder? Is there no driving recorder?"

I grabbed his arm excitedly as if I were trying to grab the last straw.

"... Kate said that she was frightened upon receiving our call and knowing that she had hit someone. On the way to the police station, she hit a tree on the side of the road and damaged the driving recorder."

I collapsed on the chair and forced a smile, saying mockingly, "Officer, do you believe in coincidences?"

The policeman looked at me, opened his mouth, and let out a long sigh.

"Ms. Lawrence, based on the preliminary investigation, your daughter's death was an accident. Please restrain your grief. However..."

He changed the topic and said in a low voice, "If you can provide me with some other evidence, we will do our best to seek justice for you!"

I understood what he meant.

If I could find evidence of John's having an affair with Kate, the nature of Kate's accident would be changed.

"I'll find it as soon as possible, officer."

Chapter 3

I stopped crying and called to resign. Then I contacted a funeral home.

As I watched Dora's body being pushed into the burning furnace, I widened my eyes.

Likewise, I would keep my eyes wide open and watch the murderer who cruelly hurt Dora be brought to justice and pay with her life!

I stayed with Dora in the cemetery until dawn.

Per a friend's introduction, I found a reliable private detective agency, asking them to secretly follow John and Kate to collect evidence of his extramarital affairs.

After that, I went back home. The fact that Dora was no longer alive shuddered me.

In a trance, I seemed to see Dora smiling brightly.

"Mom, look, I got full marks in the exam! You and Dad promised to take me to eat at McDonald's!"

"Mom, I won the first prize in the National Middle School Student Writing Competition! Am I amazing? I have to call Dad quickly and tell him the good news!"

"Mom, Dad is so busy. I ranked third in the college entrance examination in the city. Many universities are eager to enroll me. When I apply, I want him to give me suggestions. I wanted to become a powerful lawyer like him and help more people who need help, but he didn't have time for me..."

"Mom, don't cry. Dad must love us. I'll help you get him back!"

"Dora! My Dora!"

I stretched out my hands, desperately trying to hold Dora, who was patting her chest and smiling at me. In the end, I fell to the ground amid a burst of broken illusion.

"Ah!"

Hugging myself tightly, I couldn't help but burst into tears.

"Dora, Mummy only wants you! Mummy just wants you to stay by my side. Mummy doesn't want anyone else. The only thing I want is that you're safe..."

...

I got through the following dark days alone in a daze.

Then I received a call from the private detective agency. They excitedly told me that they had taken a lot of intimate photos of John and Kate.

I received hundreds of photos and flipped through them one by one.

It turned out that John took Kate to Acoby to relax after Dora's tragic death and Kate's release.

In the photos, the two of them were laughing happily. They walked barefoot on the beach, hugging and kissing each other...

Kate snuggled into John's arms and fed him coconut juice.

After she was exhausted from the walking, he picked her up in his arms and walked back to the hotel...

I fixed my gaze on the last photo.

They had returned to Yrore.

Kate fell to the side of the road and broke her knee. John knelt down on one knee and helped her clean the wound with distress on his face. The sun shone on the side of his face, rendering him handsome and gentle.

I had never seen him like this.

We had been married for 18 years. I had always thought that he was cold by nature, and was someone that wasn't good at expressing his love.

Now it seemed that I was wrong. The truth was he didn't love me at all.

I thought I loved him from the bottom of my heart. While flipping through these photos, I didn't feel any heartache.

On the contrary, I was so happy that I trembled all over.

Finally, I got the evidence of his cheating on Kate!

This shameless couple killed Dora. I wouldn't let them off easily!

I put on my clothes, went to a supermarket to buy groceries, and went to a pharmacy.

Back at home, I took a shower, put on delicate makeup, and dialed John's number.

He on the other end of the phone laughed happily. It seemed that he was in a good mood.

I asked lightly, "Where are you?"

John instantly turned indifferent, saying, "What are you trying to do now? A month ago, you insisted on divorcing me. I left as you wished, but you keep calling me to harass me now. Anne, are you a bitch?"

I softened my voice and said, "John, I miss you. Dora misses you. Come back."

There was no response from him. I waited quietly until he said, "Anne, you begged me to come back. You have to prove that you are sincere..."

Before he could finish his words, I said, "Please. John, Dora is not here. I'm cold and lonely..."

"... Okay."

As soon as he agreed, Kate's voice full of grievance suddenly rang out. "John, are you leaving? You promised to do star-gazing with me tonight!"

I heard him say in a low voice, "Anne is scared at home alone. I will be with you next time."

"She's so old. What's there to be afraid of? Why didn't she find a decent excuse to lie? My leg is injured!"

John coaxed Kate gently and said to me, "I'll be there in half an hour." Then he hung up the phone.

...

As a top-notch lawyer, John had always been punctual. I checked the time and opened the door, only to see him standing at the door expressionlessly.

I helped him take off his jacket and hung it up. Then I arranged his shoes neatly. I was the same as before, full of concern and doing everything in order.

Seeing me like this, he became more confident. He said, "You infuriated me so much last time. If Kate hadn't comforted me, I might have divorced you for real."

I was packing my things without saying a word.

He said, "I've been busy with work since I left. I only got together with her in the past few days. However, our relationship is very pure, and nothing happened between us. Don't speculate blindly and be jealous. Kate is innocent and kind. You'll know how good she is when you get to know her more."

"Is she so?"

I was more and more resentful in secret, but I looked up and smiled gently at him. "You're right. I misunderstood you. The bath water is ready. You've just come back. Go take a hot bath and relax. I'll heat up the meal. You can eat it when you are done."

"You are a virtuous wife."

John patted my face with a smile before going into the bathroom.

After I confirmed that he had locked the door, I took out his cell phone from his coat. Then I clicked open Whatsapp, only to find that the chat history between him and Kate had been deleted.

It was as if he were afraid of being discovered.

This made me even more suspicious that he was involved in Dora's case.

...

I calmly put his cell phone back.

When John came out, I invited him to dinner.

Seeing that the table was full of his favorite dishes, he moved his eyebrows slightly. I knew that this was a sign of his joy.

He picked up his utensils and ate a few mouthfuls of food.

"How has Dora been recently?"

I stopped picking up food for him, saying, "Pretty good."

"Is it true that he doesn't know that Dora is dead?"

"That's good. I almost believed you when you said she was dead a while ago. You are too much! Even if you want to trick me into getting back to your side, you can't joke about your own daughter's life. It's so unlucky!"

I nodded as I helped him put more food on his plate.

As he ate, his eyes began to blur. Then he fainted.

I dragged him from the escape passage to a car. Then I stepped on the accelerator, speeding towards Dora's grave.
