Chapter 1 of The Concert Kiss Camera Caught My Husband Flirting with My Sister

On my forty-fifth birthday, I gifted myself a concert ticket of my favorite band. I had begged my husband Roger to take me every time they had a show but he always said he was busy with business meetings so I went alone without his knowledge.

He didn’t even remember my birthday, so what was the sense of it all?

I thought this would be the best birthday ever but it all shattered when the camera panned to the crowd, capturing fans dancing, couples swaying, people hugging, and then the kiss cam lit up the giant screen.

I was still smiling, recording the stage, when the giant screen above suddenly shifted from the band to the crowd. The kiss cam. Laughter echoed, couples posed and waved. My eyes followed along casually until the camera landed on two familiar faces.

Roger. My husband. His arm was around a woman’s shoulder, his face close to hers. They were laughing, leaning in, smiling as if they were the only two people in the world. His hand casually brushed a strand of hair from her face. She giggled and rested her head on his shoulder like she belonged there.

And then I saw her face.

Paula. My sister. My heart slammed into my ribs.

The crowd began to cheer. “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” they shouted.

Roger and Paula turned toward the screen and froze.

Their smiles faded. The arm dropped. They pulled apart abruptly, scrambling to put space between them, pretending nothing had happened. But it was too late.

The moment had been captured.

Behind them, sitting casually, was my son. And his little girl. All of them… together. Like a perfect family.

My body turned ice-cold. I couldn’t breathe.

The crowd kept cheering around me, the band was starting but I couldn’t hear a thing anymore.

I clutched the seat, shaking. A memory clawed its way to the surface.

Just a week ago, I had asked Roger about this concert.

“Roger,” I said softly, placing his morning coffee beside him. “Remember that band I love? They’re performing next weekend.”

He didn’t even glance at me. “So?”

“I was thinking… maybe we could go? Together?”

He laughed. “At your age? You’re still into that nonsense? God, Isabel. Grow up.”

“You promised me when we got married,” I whispered. “And it’s my birthday. Can I have that as a gift?”

“That was twenty years ago. You don’t even have your own money to pay for that ticket. What do you expect from me? Buy it for you?”

“Because you told me to stop working,” I reminded him gently. “You said we were building a family. You asked me to stay home—”

“So now it’s my fault?” he snapped. “What a joke. Why can’t you be like your sister? Paula never needed anyone to give her anything. She’s smart. Independent. And you? Look at yourself. A housemaid in her own home.”

I remember backing away then, hurt already pulsing through my ribs.

And then, my son came in with my granddaughter.

“Mom, the sink’s disgusting. What are you doing? Can you clean it up? And my daughter wants to eat. Why is there no food? Gosh, you’re so slow! Maybe you should exercise too because you’re fat you can’t even carry a tray!”

I had laughed it off then, dismissed, telling myself it was okay because they’re family. They’re just busy… and I was just at home. It was just a bad day.

But now? Watching the screen? That laughter was dead.

My hands trembled as I turned away from the stage. The world blurred. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. I stumbled out of the stadium, away from the crowd, into the empty parking lot, where the lights felt too bright and my chest caved in from the pressure.

Panic. Gasping. I couldn’t stand. My knees hit the ground. And everything faded.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital room. Machines beeped beside me. My head pounded. A nurse hovered over me, adjusting an IV.

“You had a panic attack,” she said gently. “Someone found you collapsed outside the venue.”

I turned my head. I didn’t say anything. The silence screamed louder than the music ever could. Maybe this was a dream? Maybe I had seen it wrong? It wasn’t like that?

I reached for my phone and tried calling Roger.

No answer.

Tried again.

Nothing.

Even my son wasn’t answering his phone.

I decided to check instagram and there it was.

A photo posted by Paula.

“Concert night with the people I love the most. Thank you Roger for making it unforgettable. You’re the best!”

Below the caption was a photo of all of them.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Happy.

Without me.

On my birthday.

I sat frozen, the phone slipping from my hand and landing on the floor with a dull thud.

I thought of every year I’d spent trying to hold this family together. All the birthdays I gave them. All the sacrifices I made. The dinners I cooked. The nights I stayed up. The years I gave up my own dreams. I thought of Paula, living under my roof… and sleeping with my husband. I thought of my son, calling me a maid. Of my husband calling me pathetic.

And I realized—I was the only one who cared. I was the only one who still believed we were a family.

They had moved on without me long ago.

But I… I was still here.

Stupid. Loyal. Invisible.

Until now.

I picked up the phone again.

A deep voice answered. “Hello?”

“This is Isabel Smith,” I said, calm and cold. “I’d like to file for divorce. My husband’s name is Roger Smith.”
