Chapter 1
On my tenth birthday, my mother left me forever.
Dad kicked me out of the house and made me live in school for eight years. He hated my guts.
When I died on the operating table, Dad was next door transplanting my brain into his adopted daughter.
The last words he said to me were "Will you vomit blood or faint this time? I warn you, stop bothering me unless you die!"
Before the call was hung up, I heard Dad comforting Yuki Smith to let her not be nervous.
He would save her.
Twenty-four hours later, my neglected corpse was found by a nurse lying in a pool of blood.
After my death, my soul was trapped beside Dad who was very anxious.
After the operation, Yuki was sent to the intensive care unit, while Dad was standing outside the window like a statue.
Looking at Yuki's pale face, Dad's eyes were filled with worry.
"Whether we succeed or not depends on these 24 hours."
Max came to Dad and patted Dad's shoulder to comfort him.
"You have done your best. The rest is up to fate. If even the best brain doctor can't save Yuki, then there is no possibility of survival."
"By the way, it seems someone called you while you were in surgery just now."
After saying that, he handed my dad's phone back to him.
After unlocking the phone, Dad looked at the name on the screen and pursed his lips impatiently.
It was a call from my head teacher.
When Dad just long-pressed to delete it, the head teacher called again.
Max kindly reminded him, "Answer it. There have been several calls. Did something happen to Yana at school?"
Hearing my name, Dad looked very disgusted and resentful.
"Hasn't she had enough accidents? She either faints or vomits blood. Every time I went over there, nothing happened. She's kidding me! If she could be half as sensible as Yuki, I wouldn't have to stop paying her tuition!"
"Don't mention her to me! Every time I hear her name I think of my lover's mutilated corpse!"
I was pale beside him, and my eyes were gradually filled with frustration and despair.
Dad, I wasn't lying to you, and I wasn't kidding you.
I just didn't want you to worry, so I took some medicine before you came...
From the day Mom died, Dad, who had used to love me, looked at me like an enemy.
After Mom's funeral, he went to the mountains.
There he met Yuki. Yuki had a brain tumor but her family had no money for treatment.
Dad took her back home and enrolled me in a boarding school dormitory.
From that day on, he had only one daughter, Yuki.
He was unwilling to glance at me or care about me. Even before I died he only cursed me with hatred.
But Dad was devoted to Yuki. In order to fulfill his promise to make Yuki recover before she was twenty years old, he looked everywhere for kind-hearted people who was willing to donate the organ.
He even spent his savings from years of work.
I knew this was my only chance to get Dad's forgiveness, so I signed the organ donation agreement when I knew I was dying.
I just hoped that Dad would forgive me after knowing that I saved his beloved daughter before I died.
Tears rolled down my cheeks. Dad finally pressed the answer button just one second before the call was hung up.
The head teacher's anxious voice came.
"Hello, is that Yana Combs' parent? She is now——"
Before she finished talking, Dad interrupted her impatiently.
"Alright, don't tell me about her! If she dies, just notify me to collect her corpse!"
Dad, who was usually gentle, would lose his mind when it came to my affairs.
Oh no, as well as Yuki's affairs.
Dad seemed to think that Yuki was the chance Mom gave him to atone for his sin. As long as he saved Yuki, he would be able to forgive himself.
Max was once as famous as Mom in the medical field.
Seeing Dad losing his mind because of hatred, Max couldn't help but express his concern,
"It's been eight years since the incident. Besides, the plane crash wasn't caused by Yana. I have witnessed the growth of both of you. She's your only relative in this world!"
But every time someone mentioned this matter, Dad would interrupt him irritably.
"Mr. Alex, please don't mention her to me anymore, okay? I just want to save Yuki now!"
Max sighed and left. The nurse beside Dad mustered up the courage to step forward.
"Mr. Combs, you have some outpatient clinics today——"
"Push away them. I'd like to stay here to watch Yuki wake up. I won't leave for a moment. This way, if anything happens to her, I'll know immediately and it will be easier for me to save her."
I gave a bitter smile and looked inside in the direction Dad was looking.
I was indescribably envious.
I donated my corpse, but Dad didn't even smile at me.
Yuki didn't have to do anything, but Dad sacrificed his own medical time.
In order to save more people, he once admitted all the patients who did not have an appointment into the outpatient department.
But in front of Yuki, his principles were no longer principles.
After a while, Max suddenly called.
Dad stared at Yuki intently. Then he pressed the speakerphone button without looking at the screen.
"Eric, why do I see Yana's name on the hospital list? Did something happen to her?"
Chapter 2
After listening, Dad frowned. His patience had been worn to the limit.
He quickly glanced at the date on his phone and his chest began to breathe heavily.
"Doesn't she know what day it is? What is she doing here? Get her out! I don't want to see her!"
Today was my eighteenth birthday and Yuki's nineteenth birthday.
It was also the eighth anniversary of Mom's death.
Max's voice became deeper.
"Eric Combs, it's the inpatient list rather than the hospital's visitor list! You may ask Yana if there's something uncomfortable?"
"Or you go to the office and take a look. Yana waits in your office every time she comes to see you. She doesn't like to talk, so she won't tell you if she's really feeling uncomfortable."
Dad heard my name so many times within a short time that his patience ran out.
He said irritably, "When has Yana ever felt comfortable since my wife left and Yana lived in the school? Every day there's something wrong, but after I go back, everything is fine. What kind of illness is this? I'm a doctor. Can't I see that she's faking it?"
"Her face is as yellow as cornmeal. Didn't she even know to use white powder when putting on makeup. Does she think I'm a moron? I don't know this kind of person who killed her own mother and is a constant liar! Don't tell me about her!"
On the other end of the phone, Max was very angry about Dad's attitude.
"If you don't ask, I'll ask! You will regret it later if you keep this attitude!"
"If your lover were alive, she would never allow you to do this to her daughter!"
Dad was also angry and his face showed a little more anger.
"I won't acknowledge that Yana Combs is our daughter! She doesn't deserve it! After Yuki wakes up, I'll take her to move her name to my family's household registration book."
Max was so angry that he kept yelling "you you you" for a long time, then he suppressed his anger and said, "If she were alive and saw how you treated your daughter in this way, you would be the one who was removed from the household register! You have stopped giving Yana living expenses and tuition fees for eight years. How do you let a little girl live outside? Have you ever thought about it? Have you ever taken a look at her dormitory? There are more part-time work uniforms than school uniforms!"
"Do you know what you are doing? Are you worthy of your lover? Eric, in terms of professional ability, you are the one I am most optimistic about, but as a person, I really don't want to say anything about you!"
His angry voice gradually subsided, but Dad's eyes were red.
Despair was crawling in the wrinkles.
After a moment, he yelled in the hospital corridor, "Don't mention it to me! If it weren't for Yana, how could my wife change the flight and die? Unless Yana dies, I will never forgive her!"
My father's angry words hit my heart, making it hard for me to breathe.
A feeling of weakness spread throughout my body. I slowly squatted down along the wall, holding my head with both hands.
I also wanted to be a great doctor like them.
I worked hard to earn money part-time. I attended classes during the day and worked at night. The long-term staying up all night and stress led to me being diagnosed with liver cancer three years ago.
But when I handed the report to Dad with trembling hands and caution, he tore it up and threw it in my face without even looking at it.
"Yana, do you think I'll forgive you if you are sick like Yuki? Dream on! If you continue lying to me with these fake reports, I'll call the police. Believe it or not."
But I had the examination in his hospital, and he would find it in the system if he checked it.
After that day I never mentioned being sick again.
But every time I fainted at school, my head teacher would call him and I couldn't stop the teacher.
Dad, you would never get a call again.
This time I really left.
Chapter 3
My corpse was on the operating table, and the organs that were not invaded by cancer cells were removed one by one.
While Dad was still guarding the door of Yuki's operating room.
The nurse who was about to push my hollowed-out corpse for cremation hurried past Dad, but Dad suddenly stopped the nurse.
"Please help me watch over it first. Don't leave for even half a minute. Call me anytime if there's anything unusual. I'll be back soon after I go to the bathroom."
The nurse said awkwardly, "But the deceased who donated his organs..."
Dad frowned and said, "She saved my daughter. Can I take care of her affairs myself later? Now you help me keep an eye on the operating room."
After saying, he walked away, looking back every few steps, his eyes full of worry.
Half an hour later, Dad finally came back, and it was time for the nurse to change shifts.
Several nurses went to eat, leaving only those on duties.
My corpse was forgotten on the operating table.
After a while, a nurse came running over with a takeaway meal and handed it to Dad.
"Mr. Combs, there's your takeaway at the door."
Only then did Dad withdraw his gaze from Yuki's face.
He rubbed his swollen eyebrows and looked down to see Yuki's name on the receipt.
There was finally a warm smile in those tired eyes.
"Yuki is such a caring person. You even ordered takeout for me before the surgery."
There was a long note on the list. Dad read it word by word.
His eyes were red after reading it.
[Dad, you should have finished my surgery by now, right? Are you tired? Are you so busy that you forget to eat? I ordered this for you. If I wake up, I'll supervise you to eat every day. Health is the most important thing!]
Dad wiped the tears from his eyes with a napkin and finished his takeaway while standing.
Just as Dad threw the garbage into the bucket nearby, Max called again.
"I've already found Yana's ward. I'll send it to you. Go there and take a look. I'm a little busy today."
As soon as Max finished talking, Dad, who just calmed down because of Yuki, were ignited again by me.
"What is she doing? Doesn't she know I'm very busy today? Did Yana ask you to tell me? Is she dead? Let her come to me!"
"I won't leave Yuki until she is out of danger!"
"Max, I haven't said harsh words to you in such a long time. My biological daughter only makes trouble for me when I'm busy, but my adopted daughter even ordered takeout for me before she went into the operating room. Yuki worries about me because I was so busy that I didn't have time to eat. Do you still think that Yana is worthy of being my daughter?"
Dad hung up the phone directly. This was the first time he had a conflict with Max.
I didn't expect it was because of me again.
But that won't happen again. If Dad found out that I was dead, he wouldn't be angry anymore.
Dad picked up the phone and took a look at the ward number. His face instantly turned cold and he deleted the chat history.
On the way back to the ward from the trash can, he passed by the door of the ward where I had lived without changing his expression.
At this moment, he suddenly turned his head and looked.
His eyes were filled with disdain and disgust. He cursed in a low voice, "Actor."
I had my heart in my mouth. As long as he pushed the door open, he would know that I was not lying to him.
But Dad didn't mean to stop.
The feeling of loss had accumulated so much that I had become numb and only bitterness remained in my mind.
I followed Dad to the corner and his face became gloomy and cold.
He suddenly stopped.
After a moment, he suddenly turned around and walked towards my ward.
Dad reached out and twisted the doorknob hard, then stood at the door and shouted angrily,
"Yana, come out!"
Naturally, no one responded. He took two steps forward, but saw half an empty bed.
Dad, if you took two more steps forward, you would see what I left for you!
I really didn't lie to you...
I didn't kill my mother...
But Dad had never had patience with me. When he saw that half of the bed was empty, he immediately turned around and left.
His strength was so strong that the door of the ward almost fell off.
On the way back, he was very anger.
Picking up the phone and pulling me off the blacklist, he took a deep breath and said angrily,
"Yana, if you keep wasting the hospital's resources, I'll have the security guards drag you out! What kind of hospital are you in if you're not in the ward? You can run faster than the doctor. Is that the state of being sick?
"I order you to go through the discharge procedures right now! Do you know how many patients are not eligible for hospitalization every day? I'll give you one day, and if you can't get out of here, don't call me Dad anymore!"
As the message was sent, the phone on the pillow of my bed rang.
No one opened it again.
Dad returned to the door of the ward and stood outside the window watching Yuki.
He seemed to remember something and took out his phone to send a message to Max.
"I checked. You've been fooled by Yana's tricks! She's not even in the ward!"
After sending the message, Yuki's fingers inside suddenly moved.
Dad immediately pressed his body against the glass and opened his eyes wide, afraid that he had seen it wrong.
It was confirmed that Yuki's condition was stable and there were signs of waking up.
Dad no longer cared about my cheating and just took out his phone.
He opened the shopping app and bought some jewelry that little girls may like.
Then, he opened the food delivery app to buy Yuki's favorite strawberry cake.
He kept pacing outside the ward, "Is there anything else that Yuki likes?"
After a while, he slapped his head suddenly.
He strode into his office and took out the household registration booklet he had prepared long ago.
In his haste, he bumped into the nurse who had been taking care of me.
When the nurse saw Dad, her eyes were suddenly bright.
"Mr. Combs, your daughter, Miss Combs, is—"
But Dad waved his hands impatiently and rushed out of the ward without saying a word.
Just then he saw Yuki open his eyes, so he let out a long breath and finally relaxed.
At that time, the cell phone rang. After answering it, Dad heard the frightened voice of the medical staff.
"Mr. Combs, your daughter's corpse is still in the operating room after the organs were removed. The nurse just discovered it! Please come here and take care of the deceased's affairs!"
