Chapter 3

Jack sent me away from the hospital like I was worthless, and he made sure to give me a warning.

"In two weeks, Cindy has to apologize to everyone at my birthday party, or else I'll show you the consequences of being her mother."

I held onto the watch in my hand so tightly it almost hurt.

My daughter had been looking forward to Jack's birthday party even more than he was.

She had planned his birthday present for three months, saving her entire allowance for a year to buy a fancy watch.

Every morning, she would ask me with big hopeful eyes, "Do you think Daddy will like my gift? If he likes the watch, maybe he won't hate me anymore."

My heart hurt every time she asked. I had hoped that the birthday party would bring our family closer together.

However, my daughter was gone now. All my hopes and dreams were dashed.

Holding my daughter's tiny urn, I was filled with regret.

If only I had gone against my father's wishes and not agreed to the arranged marriage with Jack. Would things be different then?

I did not even know about Yvonne when I first met Jack.

He had been so kind to me when we united our families with our wedding.

However, once Jack took over my family's business, he changed.

He would bring Yvonne home and tell our daughter she would be the new lady of the house.

He even bought Yvonne a pink crystal for $7.5 million at an auction.

At the same time, he only gave me and my daughter $750 a month to live on.

When I asked him about the bills for all the fancy things he had bought, he was distant.

"You don't deserve my money," he said. "That $750 a month is a gift."

I was too weak to fight back, and things got worse.

I did not give my daughter a bright future. I had let her down.

I dried my tears, trying to be strong.

I had to make things right for Cindy, even if it was the last thing I did.

I wanted to make those who hurt her pay.

The day I got the DNA test results, I knew I needed the best lawyer in town.

However, Jack was the top lawyer around.

I could not bring myself to call him for a long time. When I finally did, Yvonne answered.

"Jack's busy with my brother's case. Don't cause any trouble," she said.

I held my phone tightly, feeling like something bad was coming.

"What case?" I asked, my voice shaking without me even noticing.

However, Yvonne did not want to explain and just hung up on me.

When I tried calling back, Jack never picked up again.

All the hope I had held onto for days shattered on the day of the trial.

Yvonne walked in, hand-in-hand with Jack, both of them smiling and chatting. Right beside them was the man who had killed my daughter.
