Chapter 3
“I went out with my friends for some drinks,” I said lazily.
Heather said with a screeching voice, “I’ve told you many times that I don’t like it when you drink!”
I was dizzy, so I ignored her. I walked to the table and poured myself a glass of water.
Heather stood up and walked toward me.
“I didn’t forget about your birthday. Here’s your gift.” She passed me a paper bag as she spoke.
I glanced at it.
It was a pair of sports shoes. From the logo printed on the bag, I could already tell that she had simply bought them from the mall downstairs.
I recalled that she had gotten Brandon a pair of luxury-brand sports shoes for his birthday last year. She hired a personal shopper and even had to place the order two weeks in advance.
She just humored me when it came to my birthday.
I was expressionless, and Heather asked, “Don’t you like it?”
In the past, I would be ecstatic whenever I received gifts from her.
This time, I simply grimaced and said, “Thanks.”
Heather took a deep breath. “Will, I’m serious. I’m just giving birth to a child for Brandon to thank him for saving my life. Stop pouting. I’m really tired.”
I took a sip of water. “Don’t you need to take care of him at the hospital?”
Heather was momentarily stunned.
“You’re asking me to take care of Brandon?”
I nodded. “Didn’t you say that he constantly needs someone with him? You should go.”
“Will, just say you’re jealous. Stop pretending like you’re not. Otherwise, I’ll only look down on you!” Heather responded angrily.
“Suit yourself.”
I put down the glass of water and walked toward the bedroom.
After a while, I heard the door slamming.
The next morning, I woke up with a twisting pain in my stomach. I immediately went to the hospital.
The doctor said that I had a malignant tumor in my stomach and needed to get it surgically removed.
I did not inform my parents about it, as I did not want to worry them.
My surgery was a huge success, and I checked my phone when I woke up. Heather never sent me any text messages.
I laughed at myself.
Whenever I had a fight with her, I would be the one to apologize first. She would be aloof and always wait for me to make it up to her.
One time, Brandon woke up in the night due to a fever, and he gave Heather a call.
I did not want her to go to him, and we got into a fight. Because of that, she gave me the silent treatment for two weeks. In the end, I won her over by sending food to her office for three consecutive days.
After I was discharged, I bumped into Brandon while I waited for the elevator.
He looked healthy, not like a person with numbered days. I suspected that he might not be sick at all!
When Brandon saw me, he sneered.
“Will, you won’t win this battle.”
I sneered back. I did not plan to participate in his little game.
Brandon was offended when he saw my mocking smile.
“Heather loves me. You should divorce her soon. Stop hogging her to yourself!”
“Since she loves you so much, why won’t she agree to divorce me?” I asked.
My question seemed to anger him, and he punched me in the face.
I did not let him have his way as I hit him back. I had been wanting to hit him for the longest time!
However, I just had my surgery, so I was very weak. My hit did not have much of an impact.
Yet, Brandon fell onto the floor as if he could not breathe.
I could tell that he was faking it. His complexion looked healthier than mine.
Right then, Heather quickly walked over.
“Brandon, are you alright?”
She helped Brandon up as she glared at me.
“Will, are you insane? I’m telling you right now that if you dare to hurt Brandon, I’ll never forgive you!”
My face was injured too, but it was as if she could not see it. All she saw was Brandon.
This was not the first time. Heather had always sided with Brandon, even though I was her husband.
I pressed my hand against my abdomen and spoke coldly as I bore the pain. “Heather, since you love him so much, why won’t you sign the divorce papers?”
Heather’s expression changed. She moved her lips as if she was trying to explain. But Brandon suddenly leaned against her.
“Heather, I didn’t mean it. Don’t be angry and ruin your relationship with Will because of me.”
Brandon gave me a taunting look when he said that.
“Will, I’m sorry. I know Heather’s been taking care of me for a while. You must be upset about it.
“Blame it on me, not Heather.”
He was acting like a pick-me. If this had happened in the past, I would have definitely reacted with jealousy. However, I was too lazy to bother anymore. I turned around and walked toward the stairs.
“Will, stop.” Heather chased after me.
“You’ve hit Brandon. You should apologize to him.”
I did not turn around. Just as I was about to go down the stairs, someone pushed me from behind.
I was very weak, so I fell down the stairs as a result.
Heather’s hands froze in midair. When she saw that I was covered in blood, her pupils contracted…
