Chapter 1

To fulfill the Bet-on Agreement, I pretended to be a nobody and interned at my husband Evan Grant’s company for a week.

On my first day at work, I ran into a woman waving a Marriage Certificate around at the front desk like she owned the place.

“Do you even know what a marriage certificate means? It means I’m the only one for Mr. Grant!

“Why are you standing so lazily? Is your spine weak, or do you just not see me? Lower your head! Keep it down until Mr. Grant arrives!

“Is the cafeteria food terrible? I’ll have the Michelin chef spice it up for you!”

I was about to step forward when a colleague grabbed my arm.

“She’s Mr. Grant’s First Love,” they whispered. “I heard he proposed a hundred times before she finally said yes…”

The colleague nodded toward the certificate and warned me kindly:

“The worst that happens if you offend Mr. Grant is you might get fired. But offend Mrs. Grant… and you’ll vanish completely.”

I nearly laughed out loud.

I pulled out my phone and called my brother.

“Lucas, get Evan here. Bring the divorce papers too. I want to see him on his knees begging me within five minutes.”

Today was my first day at work as an intern in my husband Evan Grant’s company.

I stood by the front desk, about to head over to the HR department to check in, when a woman in a high-end designer suit barged in, slamming a Marriage Certificate onto the counter.

“A new intern? No wonder you’re so clueless!”

“Holding that document so high, are you trying to hide your face or just in my way? Put it down! Stand properly with your hands at your sides!”

Following intern protocol, I lowered my head slightly and spoke in a calm, neutral tone:

“Hello, how may I help you?”

That single “Hello” seemed to ignite her fury.

She stopped in front of me, her voice sharp:

“What’s going on? Does the HR department just hire anyone now?”

She pointed to my name badge.

“Look at my certificate, then look at your badge. What makes you think you have the right to speak to me? Call me Mrs. Grant!”

The intern standing next to me paled and quickly tugged my sleeve, bending forward first:

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Grant! She’s new and doesn’t know the rules. Please don’t be angry!”

The woman snorted and rolled her eyes before striding into Evan’s private office.

The intern whispered to me:

“That’s Vivian Moore, Mr. Grant’s First Love. Don’t mess with her. If she whispers a word to him, our entire internship could be over.”

I was a bit surprised. Evan only had one marriage certificate, which should have been safely locked in our apartment’s safe.

So why would he allow this woman, Vivian, to wave a fake certificate around and strut through his company?

I pushed down my doubts. Right now, completing my internship tasks and observing Evan’s management style was my top priority. This was also a chance to see just how arrogant this self-proclaimed Mrs. Grant could be under his indulgence.

...

By lunch, Vivian had already called the internal line directly to the HR department.

I answered, and her sharp voice came through the receiver:

“Bring me a hand-brewed coffee, Blue Mountain No. 1, water at 185 degrees Fahrenheit, and have it in my office immediately.”

I hurried to the pantry, but hand-grinding the coffee beans took time. A five-minute delay was enough.

By the time I carried the coffee to her, she waved her hand violently:

“Is your HR department dead? Look at the time! My perfect tasting window has been missed by five whole minutes! Do you know how much the flavor suffers with this temperature difference?

“If it ruins my mood, are you ready to take responsibility?”

All eyes in the HR department turned to me.

Although Vivian looked immaculate and dressed perfectly, her cutting tone made everyone uncomfortable.

I forced myself to stay professional:

“Ms. Moore, I’m very sorry, but hand-brewed coffee does take time.”

Chapter 2

She snatched the cup from my hands and poured the scalding coffee over the back of my hand without a second thought.

“With your clumsy hands, I really don’t understand how you even got into Grant Holdings. I bet you didn’t get here by playing fair, did you?

“You’re doomed! Wait till you get fired!”

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, the sting fueling my rising anger.

Just as I was about to snap, the HR supervisor rushed forward, blocking my path.

“I’m so sorry, Ms. Moore! She’s new. I apologize on her behalf. Please don’t get upset; it’s not worth harming your health over such a small thing!”

She whispered to me while subtly holding my arm:

“Hold it in! Don’t react! Think about her status. We could lose our entire year-end bonus! Don’t waste energy on someone like her. Leave it to me.”

Vivian looked at the supervisor’s submissive posture, finally satisfied, and slowly pulled out a wet wipe to clean her fingers.

“Hmph, finally, someone who knows their place,” she said arrogantly. “Come on, I’ll take you to inspect the cafeteria.”

Inspect the cafeteria? What right did an outsider have to inspect the company’s internal cafeteria?

“Ms. Moore, the company cafeteria has strict rules. Outsiders can’t enter freely…” I started to warn.

Before I could finish, the supervisor tugged me forcefully.

“Don’t you get it? She’s Mr. Grant’s favorite. You can still navigate if you offend him, but offend her, and you’ll disappear without knowing how. Mr. Grant has spoiled her completely. Everyone in the company already knows. She’s the real lady of Grant Holdings! Our livelihoods are in her hands! Don’t take risks during your internship.”

The real lady of Grant Holdings? How could I, the legitimate wife, not know this?

Seeing me standing frozen, Vivian sneered:

“Oh, scared just hearing Mr. Grant’s name?

“Let me tell you, someone like Mr. Grant is way out of reach for a lowly intern like you. One word from him and you wouldn’t be able to survive in this industry. Understand?”

While I stayed silent, Vivian strutted into the employee cafeteria.

“Oh my, what kind of food do employees eat here?” she said, picking up a piece of braised pork with her fingers and tossing it aside.

Then she pulled a food container from her Hermès bag and slammed it onto the serving counter:

“Clearly, you’ve never had anything good. Fine, I’m in a good mood today. Let’s add some top-notch delicacies to your lunch!”

She opened the container, ready to pour it into the communal food bins.

“Ms. Moore! Absolutely not!” the cafeteria manager finally stepped in, anxious.

“The company’s food safety rules forbid any outside food from mixing with employee meals. It’s for everyone’s health! Please cooperate.”

“Rules? Safety?” Vivian laughed as if hearing a joke.

“My food is less safe than your oil-slicked stir-fry? Do you know my container is worth more than your annual salary?”

“Step aside!” the manager said firmly.

“Ms. Moore, this is a matter of principle! If any food safety incident occurs, we can’t take responsibility! Please don’t put us in a difficult position.”

Vivian’s face darkened. She took out her phone and started a video call.

“Evan, look! Your employees are rebelling! I just wanted to improve their meals, and they won’t let me! They even yelled at me!”

Evan’s gentle voice came through:

“Yun Yun, don’t be upset. Give the phone to the cafeteria manager.”

Vivian smugly shoved the screen in front of the manager.

Evan’s voice immediately turned icy:

“All relevant personnel, apologize to Ms. Moore immediately! If you don’t, each of you will be treated as severely negligent. This month’s salaries and bonuses will be fully deducted! I mean it!”

Chapter 3

The cafeteria manager’s lips trembled. The supervisor and several of my coworkers had gone deathly pale as well, exchanging helpless looks.

Evan seemed deeply displeased by the silence on our end. His voice grew even colder.

“What? Do I need to repeat myself?”

Then the video shifted.

Vivian actually turned the camera toward Evan, clearly wanting us to see where he was.

Behind him was a private room in an upscale club. Several middle-aged men sat beside him, and from the look of it, he was in the middle of an important business dinner.

Evan sat at the head of the table. When he saw Vivian acting coy, he shook his head helplessly at first, but there was no trace of irritation in his eyes. If anything, he looked indulgent.

“Evan…”

Vivian ignored the fact that he was handling business and started crying into the camera.

“Look at them. They’re all ganging up on me. I only wanted to do something nice for everyone, but they treated me like this. They completely trampled all over my kindness. Evan, you have to stand up for me!”

As she spoke, she forced out a few tears for the camera.

The wounded, pitiful look on her face was nothing like the arrogant, overbearing woman from moments ago.

Evan’s expression darkened at once.

He did not even ask what had happened. His entire focus was on Vivian through the video.

“All right, all right, don’t cry. You’ll ruin your makeup, and then you won’t look pretty. Is something this small really worth getting so upset over? I’m here. No one gets to bully you.”

He comforted her gently, then finally lifted his gaze toward our side of the screen. When he spoke again, his voice was icy.

“Do none of you understand plain English?

“I’m ordering you right now. Do exactly as Vivian says. Apologize.

“If I don’t see the right attitude from you within three seconds…”

Before he could finish, I walked straight to the front of the camera.

My face, along with the angry red burn on the back of my hand, appeared clearly on the screen.

“Evan, are you sure you want me to apologize?”

“Alice?”

There was a flicker of shock in Evan’s voice.

But the surprise on his face was quickly replaced by deeper impatience. He did not even spare a second glance at the burn on my hand. Instead, he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his free hand, visibly annoyed.

“Alice, why are you in the cafeteria?

“Aren’t you supposed to be interning in Administration?”

I looked at him calmly.

“What do you think?”

Evan’s gaze swept over the cafeteria manager and the employees behind me. His voice sank.

“Stop making a scene. Just do what Vivian asked and apologize. We can talk about everything else when I get home tonight.”

The moment he said that, everyone froze.

Not just me. Even the coworkers beside me were stunned.

Seeing this, Vivian immediately straightened with smug satisfaction and poured more fuel on the fire.

“Evan, so she’s the new intern. She was so aggressive just now. The cafeteria manager only dared to talk back because she encouraged him!”

Evan immediately turned his attention back to Vivian through the video, his voice full of concern.

“Vivian is innocent. She doesn’t have any bad intentions. She only wanted to share something good with everyone.

“Be good. Apologize first. Don’t make things difficult for me.”

I looked at him and suddenly laughed.

“Evan, do you still remember what you personally promised in our Bet-on Agreement?

“Now it’s time for you to keep that promise.”

Without waiting for his reaction, I ended the video call.

I did not hesitate for even a second. I turned neatly, pulled my personal phone from my pocket, and called my brother.

“Lucas.

“Someone has forged documents and disrupted the normal operations of Grant Holdings.

“Tell Evan to get over here immediately.

“And have him bring the divorce agreement we prepared.

“Within five minutes, I want to see him kneeling in front of me, begging me to sign it.”
