Chapter 1

When I joined my pregnant wife at her class reunion, I heard the thoughts of her male bestie.

'Once she kicks her bum husband to the curb, the money's all mine!'

He was snuggling up to my wife, raising his glass in salutations with a perfect smile, but I still caught the flicker of disgust in his eyes.

'Stupid sow thinks I'm in love with her? Who would care about her if it weren't for her money?'

He had no idea that Mary's family had gone bankrupt long ago, and her life of luxury now was all thanks to me!

"Long time no see, my friend!"

"Mary, didn't you used to date Chris, our prom king? But you're suddenly married already…"

Everyone had been busy socializing at the class reunion, only for some dunce who couldn't read the room turn everyone's attention to Mary Langley.

As silence ensued, Mary tucked her hair behind her ear. "Oh, come on—it's all history. And he wasn't interested in me back then…"

She then winked at Chris Randall, and the room erupted.

Someone reminded her, "Mary! Your husband's right there!"

She simply giggled as she hugged my arm. "It's fine—he won't get upset. Right, dear?"

I played along and smiled, not inclined to embarrass her with so many others watching.

I was more worried about her safety, as she was going out alone while being pregnant.

I just didn't think I had to be here to watch this crap with my own eyes.

Meanwhile, Mary was escalating, even crossing arms with Chris to drink.

Sometimes, you just had enough.

My expression darkened as I caught Mary to stop her, when I heard a voice.

'Stupid sow! Trying to get me drunk? She really thinks I like her! Who would look at her twice if it wasn't for her money?

'Once she dumps her bum husband, all that money's mine!'

It was Chris' voice, and I looked up to catch the hint of disgust he didn't notice himself.

At the same time, everyone else was cheering, "Chug! Chug! Chug!"

I got up and pulled Mary off right then. "The doctor told you not to drink, didn't he?"

And no man could abide with their wife messing around with another man like that anyway!

"It's just a sip! What would happen?!" Mary frowned in annoyance, still holding her glass.

I raised my brow at her, when Chris, who had been quiet away, exclaimed, "Argh!"

Mary turned all her attention to him right then and then turned back to glare at me. "Just look at how petty you are! You made Chris all wet!"

My wife was being stolen, and I was the petty one?!

"It's alright—just go with your husband. My shirt got a little thirsty, so it drank from your cup."

While Chris made Mary laugh, I began, "Mary, just listen. He's not even—"

A chorus of gasps put me off before I could finish, as Chris shirt was so wet it bared his chest completely.

How cunning—it was barely a few drops, so how did he end up soaked through?

"It's been so long, but you still have such a nice body," Mary sighed, almost salivating.

Then, turning toward me with a look of contempt, she huffed, "Shame I can't say the same about you…"

I almost rolled my eyes.

I didn't work out because I'd been working myself silly every day just to afford her an easy life.

She was certainly sweet to me when she took my salary to cover her debts, but now, she was complaining about my figure?

Chris smiled just then, a puppyish grin that the ladies liked so much these days. "Come on, I'd never measure up to your husband. I've been single all this while, but he even married you. That's why I have time to stay fit, see?"

That only left Mary's eyes burning with passion as she looked at him.

However, I could once again clearly hear Chris' thoughts.

'Oh, the sow is really taking the bait! Once her husband's gone, all that money—mine!'

Even as the crowd around them cheered, Chris coughed loudly twice before flashing another innocent smile at Mary.

As a man, I could tell right away that he did that on purpose. "I'll pass, Mary. Your husband doesn't look too pleased, and it's not worth ruining your marriage over something so trivial."

Chapter 2

The more Chris tried to say no, the more eager Mary was—she even shoved me and said, "Just say you don't mind, old-timer."

I scowled as I growled the words, "I do mind."

Mary's face darkened right then. "Chris is my best friend! You're getting jealous over that?! I told you not to come, but you insisted—and now you're being a buzzkill! Just look, you're souring everyone's companionship! Everyone's so uncomfortable!"

Companionship? They called this companionship?!

"It's not happening as long as I'm around," I retorted, my face just as dark.

She sprang to her feet right then, snapping, "Get out!"

I'd really spoiled her rotten, leading to that terrible temper.

That was when I heard Chris' thoughts again: 'Woah. A husband living off his wife's wealth, and he still has the audacity to throw a fit? Guess he won't be around soon!'

Chuckling, I picked up my glass from the table.

"You'd better not regret this later, pal," I told Chris and chugged my drink.

Chris picked up his glass too, his expression gleeful. "Drive safe. Don't trip over yourself."

As soon as I left the room, I could hear the crowd cheering again, egging on Mary and Chris.

I shook my head—Chris really had no idea that Mary's family had gone bankrupt, and I was the only person making a living for them.

Soon after I left the party, I received a photo of Mary kissing Chris, their lips virtually glued together.

It was not until midnight that she came home, clearly drunk.

Seeing me sitting on the couch, she wobbled over, putting her feet over my lap so that I took off her socks.

I had been worried that her family's bankruptcy stressed her out and when she was pregnant on top of that.

That was why I had been doing everything she said, only for this crap to happen.

"You and your friend really know how to have a good time."

I held up my phone at her, showing her the photo of her kissing Chris.

She barely had a look and nonchalantly smacked my hand aside. "Are you jealous? It's just Truth or Dare. Or you'd rather have them call me a loser?"

I raised a brow—that was a good enough reason for her to cheat?

"Do you still consider me your husband?" I asked her.

She didn't answer and pretended to fall asleep.

I didn't expose her and let it slide for the sake of our child.

We gave each other the silent treatment since that reunion party, but I tried to extend an olive branch out of concern for her pregnancy.

Taking a day off on Valentine's Day, I cooked up a storm to break the ice.

However, Mary left first thing in the morning to visit a friend and never came home.

The food on the table that was steaming hot cooled before long, even becoming hard.

I kept staring at the clock on the wall, telling myself that I must stay calm for the sake of our child.

As the clock hands ticked, my phone suddenly rang.

"Dr. Jordan? We just got a patient who fell down a hill."

"Yeah, I'll be right there."

Staring at the food on the table, I wrote a note and left.

When it came to saving lives, every minute counted.

Once I arrived, the nurse quickly briefed me on the patient's condition.

It was a pregnant woman who went hiking early in the morning and continued for the whole day.

I shook my head—the young 'uns were really getting crazier these days.

Strenuous exercises were a no-no for pregnant women, and forget falling down a slope!

As I put on my gloves, I asked, "Have the patient's family been informed?"

The nurse shook her head. "She was brought in by a man… a friend."

"Well, we can't wait," I said, determined. "Find and contact her family, and in the meantime, I'll operate on the patient."

If the patient's family wasn't informed, the hospital would be held responsible for anything that goes bad.

Moreover, it was a guy friend who brought her here and not her husband? The messy relationship there was definitely going to cause a fight in the hostile.

However, as I went to the surgical table and routinely examined the patient, I froze.

The patient was my own wife, Mary.
