Chapter 2

"How old are you now? Why are you still as cowardly as when you were little?" Mom asked indifferently.

I rubbed the scars on my arms, my heart aching as if being pricked by needles.

When I was a child, my parents would lock me in the basement and whip me with sticks whenever I broke something or did something that upset them.

They put me in solitary confinement under the pretext of letting me reflect on myself.

But my parents would never bear to say a single harsh word to Will, even if he made a severe mistake.

"You should go get the marriage license with Dan tomorrow morning!"

Hearing this, I couldn't stand it anymore. I sprang to my feet and overturned the table.

"You rebellious girl, what do you want to do?" My mother looked at the mess on the floor in disbelief and frowned, ready to slap me.

I grabbed her hand and said, "I'm suffocating here. I'll never come back again!"

Will stepped forward to stop me and asked, "Where can you go if you leave home?"

I sneered, "Home? This has never been my home!"

"Sandra Charter, stop putting on an act! I'm pregnant with your Charter family's grandson, so your parents are willing to marry you to my brother even without any gifts, not to mention we gave you 100,000 dollars!"

"Don't be so hypothetical. That sum of money is for you and Will to raise your kid, isn't it? Does it ever have anything to do with me?"

"Now that you say the money has nothing to do with you, then get out of my place!"

Amy raged, holding her abdomen and trembling with anger.

My parents and Will hurriedly strode forward to support her.

Will was afraid that I would fight with Amy, so he quickly handed me a key and said, "Your stuff is in the basement. There is a bed there. You can stay there if you want..."

I went down to the basement and saw all my stuff piled up in a mess in a corner.

The clothes were moldy, and the books were drenched with water.

The bed Will mentioned was made of iron bars welded together without even a coat of paint and had already rusted in the damp basement.

It couldn't be a place for anyone to live at all!

I went upstairs, knitting my brows together tightly, but before I could knock on the door, Amy's impatient voice came from inside.

"Look at her! We shouldn't have left her even a basement when we bought this house!"

"You bought this house?"

I sensed something wrong, so I pushed open the door and questioned my parents, "Didn't you say this house was allocated to you by the government after the demolition of our old house in our hometown? Where did you get the money to buy it?"

"You sent some money home every month after you graduated from college, didn't you? It added up to more than 500,000 dollars, enough for a down payment on the house."

My legs went weak, almost causing me to fall to the ground.

My parents had always told me that they had saved this money for me so that I would have enough money for my future marriage.

Unexpectedly, they had secretly bought a 140-square-meter house without telling me.

"The warranty deed! Show me the warranty deed!"

"What? Are you intending to snatch the house from your brother Will?" My mother questioned as she stood in front of Will protectively.

My father said with a stern look, "You'll get married sooner or later. There is no room for you in this house anyway. How about you just follow Dan to your future in-laws' place today so that you can accustom yourself to life there as soon as possible?"

"I paid for this house, yet there is no room for me?"

"Does a daughter need a room?" Dad replied as if it was a matter of course.

I looked coldly at the family before me, seeing their true colors for the first time.

"From now on, I'm no longer your daughter! As for the 500,000 dollars you spent on the house, I'll contact a lawyer to retrieve it.

"By the way," I continued, staring coldly at Amy and her family, "don't think about marrying your stupid son to me!"

"You've already accepted the engagement gift. What's wrong with you?" Amy's mother immediately got unhappy and questioned my parents.

Amy covered her big belly and said threateningly, "This is your Charter family's grandson. If you don't get the marriage license with my brother tomorrow, I'll go abort the baby at the hospital!"

My parents panicked the instant they heard this.

"Mom, now that you've accepted the money, why don't you marry him? If you are reluctant, you can let Will marry him instead!

"Anyway, from now on, I'll have nothing to do with this family!"

Chapter 3

I returned to my hometown in the countryside and contacted the cemetery bureau to move my grandmother's grave to the mountain in the back of the village.

My grandmother supported me for ten years, so I wanted to do something for her now.

The huge inheritance my grandmother left me included one hundred million dollars plus ten houses.

My grandmother had been living a frugal life, so I still couldn't believe that she left me so much money.

Back then, my grandmother couldn't stand abuse by my grandfather, so she went abroad to start a business herself.

But my mother had already stood on my grandfather's side and no longer recognized my grandmother when she returned home.

When I was in high school, my parents were busy making a fuss over Will and couldn't be bothered to care about me.

They just casually left me to my grandmother.

It was in this way that I finally felt the love of a family from my grandmother.

Looking at my grandmother's humble little house at the foot of the mountain, I directly contacted a top construction project team to renovate it.

So what if my parents thought I couldn't compare to their grandson? I possessed money, way more than I could spend in my lifetime.

I paid a top attorney a fortune to retrieve the down payment of 500,000 dollars on the house from Will.

Even though I had a lot of money now, I saved that 500,000 dollars bit by bit after I graduated by working overtime and living in an apartment with cheap rent.

I was even reluctant to spend money on movies or better food and clothes.

The clothes I used to wear during that period cost only about fifty dollars each.

Out of my expectations, Amy called me before she received the demand letter.

"I'm pregnant with your Charter family's grandson. The hospital for me to give birth, the postnatal care center, and the nanny for me and my kid must all be top-notch!"

"So?" I couldn't help but chuckle.

"You work in a big city, don't you? You must have a lot of useful connections. Contact them for me in advance..."

I understood Amy's implication that she wanted me to pay for everything about her future baby and took it for granted.

Seeing that I remained silent, my mother added anxiously on the other end of the line, "Don't forget that the milk powder should be the best, too!"

"My wife, I want to see my beautiful wife..."

"Good boy, Dan, I'll let you see your wife right away and let her give birth to a chubby baby for you!"

"Great! Chubby baby..."

I rubbed my temple with my hand, feeling a terrible headache coming on.

"Let me remind you that I have already severed all ties with you! How come you still have the nerve to come to me?"

"We are already downstairs of your company. If you dare to refuse, then don't blame us for making a fuss in your leader's presence!"

Coincidentally, at this moment, I was standing at the door of my leader's office, ready to hand in my resignation.

"Just make a scene if you want!" I said nonchalantly before hanging up on them and throwing my phone into the trash can.

I could naturally reward myself with the latest mobile phone after I quit the job.

When I left the company with my belongings, I happened to see Amy pestering the security guard at reception.

"I need to see Sandra Charter. She not only abuses her parents, bullies me, and wants me to have an abortion but also intends to rob us of our house. I must see her boss and expose her evil deeds!"

My parents rumpled their hair and sat on the ground with a dejected look.

"What an undutiful daughter she is!"
