Chapter 1 of Immune To The Vampire Doctor

The lecture hall at Rearview State University wasn't a place of learning; it was a freezer for the human soul. The fluorescent lights hummed a low, migraine-inducing buzz, cutting through the dense silence of the theater. The air was thin, almost too thin to sustain the desperate, sweaty breathing of the hundred medical students packed shoulder-to-shoulder into the tiered seats. Every single one of them was trying to master the art of looking unaffected, yet their collective anxiety hung in the atmosphere like a physical weight.

At the front of the hall, Professor Arthur Thorne stood like a monument to cold endurance, a man who had stared into the inside of a thousand corpses and forgotten how to smile. His gaze swept over the crowd, devoid of any warmth or academic encouragement.

"Surgery is not about healing," Thorne rasped, his voice cutting through the silence like a freshly sharpened scalpel. "It is about precision, control, and absolute, unwavering detachment. If you are here to save souls, leave now. The morgue does not care for your empathy, your tears, or your fragile little morality. It is merely a machine of meat, bone, and conduit. If you let your emotions get the best of you, you have no business wearing that white coat."

In the back row, Julian Vance didn't fidget. He didn't even blink. While his peers' hearts hammered like trapped birds against their ribs, Julian's own pulse was a slow, deliberate thrum that he consciously forced to remain at a human, metronomic sixty beats per minute. Focus, he commanded his own rebellious biology, shutting down the ancient echoes screaming in the back of his mind. Be the ice.

"Hey, 'Doctor Ice,'" a voice hissed from the side, dripping with aristocratic contempt.

Thomas Sterling leaned over, his eyes sharp and malicious as a predator's. He was the kind of man who would step on your throat to get a better seat at the table, a legacy student whose family donations bought him immunity from consequence. "Everyone else is trembling, Julian. You're practically sub-zero. Tell me, does the sight of death get you off, or are you just a psycho who forgot how to feel?"

Julian's pen stopped dead against his notepad. He didn't look up, but the temperature in the tiny space between them seemed to plummet, causing Thomas to instinctively pull back.

"I am an aspiring surgeon, Thomas," Julian replied, his voice flat, glacial, and utterly devoid of fear. "If you spent half as much time on your pathology reports as you do obsessing over my behavior, you wouldn't be failing this rotation."

The true test, however, waited downstairs in the basement of the medical wing. The morgue was the final crucible for the first-year students, a room where careers went to die alongside the patients. The air was a thick, chemical sludge of formaldehyde, decaying tissue, and industrial disinfectant-a smell that made weaker students gag into their masks the moment the heavy doors swung open. Julian claimed the station furthest from the flickering overhead lights, retreating into the long, hungry shadows where the fluorescent glare couldn't quite reach.

His scalpel didn't just cut; it seemed to slice through reality itself. He moved with a fluid, terrifying speed, his hands performing an intricate dance of dissection that was entirely too fast for the human eye to track. He wasn't merely exploring anatomical landmarks from a textbook; he was searching for the elusive spark of life, trying to understand the fragile mechanism he so desperately wanted to control.

"Excellent work, Julian," Thorne's voice was a jagged whisper directly beside his ear, startling even Julian's hyper-attuned senses.

Thorne leaned in close, his eyes darting toward the overhead security cameras with a frantic, protective vigilance that betrayed his outward stoicism. "You are gifted beyond measure. But remember: your father thought he was the smartest man in the room, and that room ultimately ended him. Keep your mask tight, Julian. The monsters aren't just in the dark; they are sitting right beside you in the lecture halls."

Julian's ironclad focus snapped under the weight of the warning. At that exact moment, a clumsy student stumbling past in the cramped aisle slammed a heavy, steel-toed boot straight onto Julian's foot. The sudden shock wasn't just physical pain; it was an unexpected sensory trigger that short-circuited his mental restraints.

Julian spun around instinctively, his composure shattering like brittle glass. For a fraction of a second, his human facade failed completely. His pupils didn't just dilate-they exploded outward into a jagged, crimson nebula of ancient, predatory hunger. The harsh fluorescent light reflected off the stainless steel of his scalpel, throwing a bloody, demonic glow across the pale walls of the room.

Thomas Sterling froze in his tracks, his mocking smirk melting away as his jaw hit the floor. He pointed a shaking finger, his voice cracking. "Your eyes... what the hell? Were those contacts? What was that red flash?"

The entire room went deathly, suffocatingly still. Julian felt the collective gaze of twenty students land on him, their raw terror hitting his senses like a sweet, intoxicating perfume that made his fangs ache behind sealed lips. Desperation flared, and he forced a dry, mocking laugh, the sound rasping harshly in a throat that felt far too tight to sustain life.

"Fix your vision, Thomas," Julian mocked, stepping forward with calculated menace. "The formaldehyde fumes are rotting your brain. You're seeing your own inadequacy."

The air curdled. The tension was so thick it felt like it could be sliced with a knife.

"Enough!" Thorne barked, stepping physically between them to shield Julian with his own frail, imposing body. "Explain the technique on the transverse colon, Sterling, or get out of my morgue."

Julian slowly straightened his white coat, smoothing down the lapels with hands that had stopped trembling. He was stone once more. "Anatomy has strict limits. If you cannot detach yourself from the vessel, you are not a surgeon. You are merely a tourist looking at a museum exhibit. If that reality bothers you, leave now."

A terrified female student standing nearby shuddered violently, her voice a fragile, breaking thing as she looked down at the table. "Sometimes, I imagine myself lying right in their place. Do you ever feel... anything at all? Pity? Sadness for what they lost?"

Julian stepped closer to her, invading her space until she could feel the chilling absence of body heat radiating from him. His eyes were once again the dull, unremarkable brown of an ordinary student, but his voice was a razor blade. "Imagining yourself in their place? Why don't you try dying first? Then you can tell me how vivid your imagination is. If you want to survive this profession, kill your emotions. Sentimentality is a weakness. A distraction. Don't waste my time with it."

He turned his back on them, walking away, but his enhanced hearing caught every frantic, erratic heartbeat echoing through the room. He knew the truth: he was a wolf trapped in a sheep pen, and for a terrifying second, he had just shown his true teeth to the flock.

When the heavy steel doors finally clicked shut behind the departing students, the silence brought no relief. Julian stood entirely alone in the dark, staring at his own reflection mirrored in a metal tray of bloodied instruments. He touched his forehead, his fingers trembling ever so slightly as the adrenaline receded. Deep within his chest, the ancient, starving beast let out a low, frustrated growl, demanding to be fed.

Unbeknownst to him, just outside the heavy morgue door, a shadow lingered in the dim corridor. She was clutching a stolen patient file so tightly her knuckles had turned completely white. She hadn't managed to catch the full horror of his eyes in the shadows, but she had heard every chilling word. She had heard the cold, inhuman command of a man who looked at death and refused to flinch, a man whose very presence commanded absolute submission.

She wasn't running away in terror. Not yet. She needed to know precisely who and what he was hiding behind that icy facade. She had just uncovered the darkest secret of Rearview State University's most enigmatic medical student, and as a dangerous smile crept across her lips, she decided she was going to burn his carefully constructed life to the ground-just to see what kind of monstrous fire he was truly made of.
