Chapter 1

My fiancé, Julian Vance, and I were supposed to get married at The Plaza Hotel in two weeks.

But he wanted to postpone the wedding—again—because his stepsister, Sienna Croft, was on the verge of a breakdown.

Sienna was sobbing, begging Julian to whisk her away to a top-tier wellness retreat in Big Sur, and Julian was about to agree.

After two years of planning, I was done with the endless postponements.

I made a decision: if Julian didn't want this wedding, I'd find a groom who did.

Inside a bespoke tailor shop in SoHo, Julian Vance shrugged out of the tuxedo he was trying on and snatched his phone to book the next flight to Big Sur.

“Let’s postpone the wedding for a few more days. You can explain it to your parents.”

We had been together for six years, but I’d lost count of how many times Julian had dropped everything for Sienna Croft.

Just moments ago, I’d been lost in a daydream of our wedding. Now, the fantasy shattered.

Because of Sienna, our wedding had been pushed back so many times I'd become a running joke among my friends and family.

Frustration suffocated me. I fought back tears, but they burned behind my eyes.

After booking the flight, Julian turned and saw the unshed tears. He flinched, a flicker of guilt in his voice.

“You know how Sienna is with her borderline personality disorder. If we don’t give her what she wants, she’ll hurt herself. I can’t just leave her.”

Before I could say anything, his phone rang.

It was Sienna, urging him to hurry.

Julian’s voice dropped to that soothing murmur he never used with me. “The flight’s booked,” he cooed. “I’ll be there to get you soon. Start packing.”

When he hung up and looked at me again, the guilt was gone, replaced by impatience.

“I have to go, or I’ll miss my flight. You'll have to finish the fitting yourself. Just Uber home.”

Watching Julian stride away without a backward glance, my hands clenched into fists.

In college, Julian was the campus legend—proud, distant, and trailed by a flock of hopeful girls.

I chased him for two years before he finally gave in.

I treasured our hard-won relationship, always handling him with care, never making a scene or demanding too much.

But no matter how hard I tried, Julian always kept me at arm's length.

We were a couple, but an unbridgeable chasm always separated us.

I used to tell myself that was just Julian's nature. But then I saw the raw panic in his eyes whenever Sienna was upset, and I realized he wasn't a cold person at all.

Everyone knew Sienna was in love with Julian. But because of their blended family, Julian's father would never approve.

So Sienna used her illness as a weapon, a shield to stand between us. And every time, Julian would placate her in that soft, quiet voice he never used with me.

Sometimes, I felt like a pawn in their twisted game. The thought made me sick.

Over the past six years, I’d thought about leaving more times than I could count. But whenever I was on the verge of walking away, Julian would offer just enough of a compromise to pull me back from the brink.

That cycle repeated so many times that my heart had long ago hollowed out, my passion worn down to a quiet, lonely despair.

I wasn't always this person. I used to be the most dazzling debutante on the Upper East Side, a budding architect—bright, vivacious, and full of life.

Now, I was irritable and short-tempered, drowning in misery and self-pity.

My endless compromises had eroded the woman I used to be. The reflection in the mirror was a stranger—brittle and pathetic.

I refused to waste another minute on Julian. If he didn't value our relationship, then I'd find a new groom before the wedding.

Chapter 2

After a long, shaky breath, I picked up my phone and called my mother.

“Hello, Mom. I'm not going to marry Julian. Do you remember Caleb Knight, the man you mentioned? I'm ready to talk to him.”

I expected my mother to call my decision rash, but to my surprise, she laughed, a sound of pure relief.

“Oh, Willow, thank God! You’ve finally seen the light. I’m calling Caleb this instant.”

Caleb Knight wasn't a complete stranger.

We’d met as children during a family vacation in Aspen Creek, becoming fast friends for a summer. We lost touch after his family moved to Europe.

I breathed a small sigh of relief. At least he wasn't a total unknown. Our families moved in the same circles; we knew each other’s backgrounds. For a marriage on such short notice, Caleb seemed like the perfect candidate.

Soon, a message from Caleb lit up my screen.

[Your mom reached out. Let me know when you're free. I can fly to New York to meet you.]

I’d saved Caleb's number years ago when my mom first gave it to me in college, but I’d never had a reason to use it.

I hesitated for a moment before typing my reply.

[Give me two weeks. I need to sort some things out here, then I'll be in touch.]

If I was going to end things with Julian, I needed a clean break.

When Julian had stormed out of the tailor shop, he'd left our wedding rings sitting on the counter.

Julian was never forgetful. It was just another sign of how desperate he was to get to her.

He was in Big Sur with Sienna, who was provocatively plastering their “retreat” all over social media. One photo was a close-up of Julian’s back, showcasing a new tattoo. A message from Sienna, for me.

My eyes zeroed in on the ink. It was a sprawling design that cleverly covered the spot where our matching constellation tattoo—one I’d designed myself—used to be.

That tattoo had meant the world to me. I'd pulled all-nighters designing it for our first anniversary. Julian knew how much I cherished it, yet he’d let Sienna cover it up without a word to me.

My hands trembled with a white-hot anger. I fired off a text to Julian.

[How could you cover it without asking me? Even if you want to please your stepsister, you don't get to erase a memory we shared!]

I waited an eternity for his reply.

[I was going to tell you. The old one was out of style, kind of tacky. It’s just a tattoo, Willow. Don’t make a big deal out of it.]

My stomach dropped. How could he?

I was only two years older than Sienna. In Julian’s mind, she was a fragile flower to be protected, while I was just… tacky.

Just as I was about to fire back a furious reply, a notification popped up. Julian had transferred me five thousand dollars.

[This is for your trouble. Go buy a bag you like. And don't start with Sienna. She’s finally in a good place. I don’t want you disrupting her ‘healing process.’]

I accepted the money without hesitation. I didn't want his tattoo, and I didn't want him. A sudden, cold clarity washed over me: the more Julian devalued me, the more I had to value myself.

I refused to waste another second on him. I had more important things to do, like calling the wedding planner to cancel the venue and catering.

Julian had worried a lavish wedding would upset Sienna, so he’d insisted on a small celebration. I’d agreed, planning an intimate ceremony in New York with only our closest friends and family.

When I broke the news, everyone was shocked.

“Why is the wedding off? Haven't you been planning this for ages?”

A bitter smile touched my lips. I’d spent forever planning it, but every decision, every call, had been mine alone. Julian had never given a damn.

I finally admitted to myself that Julian had never truly intended to marry me. This whole time, it had been a one-woman show.

This constant push and pull had exhausted me.

I didn't bother hiding the truth. I said, "The wedding is still on. I’m just replacing the groom."

Everyone laughed, assuming it was a joke. No one believed I’d ever leave Julian.

They all knew how much I loved him. After chasing him for so long, how could I possibly give him up?

Julian had postponed the wedding more than once. Though it gutted me every time, I never let it show, so everyone just assumed I’d tolerate anything from him.

I didn't explain. It had taken me six long years to learn how painful it is to love someone who doesn't care about you.

The love I’d given was a sunk cost. The only thing I could do now was cut my losses.

Chapter 3

I finally wrapped up all the cancellation calls. Just as I was about to head home, Julian called.

His voice was hoarse. “Don’t announce the cancellation yet. We'll deal with the wedding later. Sienna's still unstable, and I don't want to upset her right now.”

He already had his counter-arguments ready, I was sure. He’d make me feel guilty, just like he always did.

But his words didn't faze me. I simply said, “Okay.”

A stunned silence followed. Even over the phone, he must have sensed the shift in me.

He knew I was fiercely protective of the tattoo we’d designed together, yet he had let Sienna erase it.

He’d thrown money at me to shut me up, a trick that had always worked before. This time, my quiet acceptance felt alien to him.

Julian licked his dry lips, his voice strained. “I know Sienna's behavior has been… difficult. I promise, I'll make sure she cooperates with her doctors and gets better.”

“Julian, the spa pool is ready, it's your turn!” Sienna's cheerful shout echoed through the phone.

Julian opened his mouth to explain, but I’d already hung up.

How ridiculous. Sienna’s file clearly stated she had borderline personality disorder, but she’d never once undergone proper treatment. Her only therapy was clinging to Julian, demanding his constant presence.

His promises were empty. He would never keep them.

At that thought, the last embers of warmth in my heart turned to ice. I began to pack up my life in the apartment we shared.

I didn't own many clothes; a few suitcases were enough.

But after six years in this penthouse, my presence was woven into its fabric.

On the nightstand, a photo of Julian and me. In the kitchen, my pink apron. In the bathroom, our matching toothbrush cups.

I packed everything that was mine and arranged for it to be put in storage. I took the photo from the nightstand and carefully cut myself out, leaving only Julian’s smiling face.

All the gifts he had ever given me, expensive or not, went into boxes. I even tore our first framed design sketch to shreds.

The wedding rings, once a symbol of eternal love, were sold. I donated the money to charity.

The weather in New York was turning colder. That night, I came down with a sudden, violent case of acute gastroenteritis, probably from a chill.

Living with Julian had taught me one thing: how to take care of myself.

Even as waves of dizziness and pain washed over me, I managed to call an ambulance.

I don't know when I fell asleep, or for how long.

When I woke up, Julian was by my bedside, his face etched with worry. He had rushed back from California. Sienna was nowhere in sight.

His voice was rough, but his concern felt real. “Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? I called and you didn't answer. If the building manager hadn't called me, I wouldn't have known you were in the hospital. Were you trying to scare me to death?”

I smiled, but my eyes were like chips of ice. “What would have been the point? Weren't you busy with your precious Sienna?”

He was never there when I needed him. His care, his warmth—none of it was ever meant for me. In six years, I had learned to rely on myself.

Julian frowned. “Are you blaming me? I booked the first flight back as soon as I heard. What else do you want from me?”

I scoffed. “I don't need you here. I can take care of myself.”

Julian's heart sank. Is this the same woman who used to need me for everything?

He fell silent. Then his phone rang.

It was Sienna. I could hear her shrill, angry voice clearly.

“Julian, you left me all alone in Big Sur for her?!”

He glanced at me, pale against the white hospital sheets, and lowered his voice.

“Willow is sick, she’s in the hospital. We'll talk later.”

Sienna snorted. “She just had to get sick now? How convenient. Don't let her fool you, she's probably faking it!”

I heard every word. I swallowed my anger and just stared at Julian.

He frowned, but when he spoke, his tone was infuriatingly gentle, as always. “Don't worry. I'll come back as soon as she's discharged. Be good, okay?”
