Chapter 2
"You don't have the right to refuse. He is Evan's son. After Evan died, we have the right to inherit the estate," Tracy declared.
I cursed inwardly at the law that gave illegitimate children equal inheritance rights.
"Evelyn, what's going on?" James suddenly burst in through the door.
"Are you Evan's brother? This is your brother's son," Tracy said as she stood up and placed the child in James' arms.
James, after some initial reluctance, ended up holding the child.
I watched with cold eyes but was actually pondering, "Who came up with this idea? Was it Carl, Carl Morrison's idea?
Tracy and James clearly knew each other.
This company belongs to Carl.
In previous years, due to poor health, Carl had completely handed over the business to Evan to manage.
Carl moved back to recover.
However, I've always held the power of financial decision-making at home. So, how did Evan get the money to support another woman?"
James' words interrupted my thoughts. "Evelyn, maybe I can take Evan's place for the paternity test? The Morrison descendants shouldn't be left adrift."
"How could you?" I pretended to be heartbroken as I looked at him.
"I understand that Evan's death and this unpleasant matter are very sad for you, but if he really is Evan's child..."
"You want to help Evan acknowledge a son? What? Did Evan dream to you that he had an illegitimate son? Or did you already know about this and keep it from me?" I questioned.
"No, how could that be? I was away on a business trip for seven days. How would I know what happened?"
"You want to help Tracy without knowing the specific situation? Moreover, Evan was driving your car when the incident happened. Can you tell me why he chose your car, especially since he had a personal driver available, and moreover, while he was drunk?" I questioned.
"How would I know? That day, there was a problem with the materials at the Gulas City branch office, and Evan asked me to have a check, so I left the car at the company. I really don't know why," James replied, somewhat guilty.
"Maybe he didn't want to bring a driver because he wanted to meet his mistress."
Saying this, he placed the child back in Tracy's arms and asked, "Is he really Evan's son?"
"Of course, Evan promised me a reward of 10 million if I gave birth to a son, but he only gave me 2 million. Today, I'll take the remaining 8 million," Tracy said proudly as she hugged the child.
James' eyes lit up. "Did Evan really say that?"
"Of course, I have evidence," she said as she took out the chat record.
"Evelyn, look, Evan really said this. This child must be my brother's," James said as he held the phone up to my face.
I swatted it away. "If it's his words, then ask him for the money. Just in case you don't know the address, he's at Peacehill Cemetery, row 8, number 18. Go ahead! Don't bother me. I won't help him raise his illegitimate son."
Saying this, I stood up and was about to walk out when James grabbed me.
"Evelyn, these assets also belong to my brother. He can use his own property!"
"Is that so? Do your parents think the same? Do you still have a conscience towards me?" I pretended to be angry.
"But the child is innocent!" James looked pitiful.
"Are you determined to make me acknowledge this child?" I asked James seriously.
At the same time, however, I was secretly pleased thinking, "You brought this upon yourself. Don't blame me for being heartless. It's all because you were greedy."
"Evelyn, don't say such hurtful words. I'm just afraid that he would suffer if left outside," James said awkwardly, smiling.
"Fine, you can go for the test. Henry is here. He is one of the company shareholders, so he can be a witness. You have no objection, right? After all, these days, paternity test reports are not so reliable."
"I have no objection. I'll do whatever you say," James replied, although he didn't understand why I wanted a witness, but seeing me agree, he quickly agreed.
Two hours later, we arrived at the testing center together for the sample collection, and we could get the report in ten days.
After leaving the testing center, Tracy still wanted to sit in my car with the child, but James stopped her.
I thought, "In ten days, you'll have a hard time,"
Chapter 3
"How is that possible? Are you sure you're not mistaken? How could he and I have no biological relationship at all?" James yelled at the report in disbelief.
"It's accurate. The samples sent for testing show no genetic link at all!" The doctor at the lab confirmed.
"I knew Evan would never cheat, let alone have an illegitimate child. James, with the report out now, do you still believe her? Her child is clearly a bastard. She's just trying to scam money. You're too naive and easy to deceive!" I fibbed, thinking, "Here comes the good show."
"Henry, you witnessed James taking a sample from that child. How could there be any mistake?"
"Yes!" Henry's complexion didn't look right. He gave me a perfunctory answer and then made an excuse to walk out to make a phone call.
"You must have bribed the tester! He is Evan's son!" Tracy, holding the child, started making a scene.
"Madam, we would never engage in misconduct. Please do not slander us!" The tester immediately denied it.
"I don't care. This report is fake. Evan said he would reward me with 10 million, and you're his wife, so you have to pay."
The onlookers started to gossip.
I explained the whole story to them.
One woman cursed, "She's really despicable, not only seducing a married man but also daring to ask his wife for money. Does she think having a child is the master key to everything? Pah, so shameless."
"Yeah, that mistress is nauseating. That lady is really pitiful," a young woman whose husband suspected her of cheating said.
"That child definitely isn't the husband's bloodline. The lab report made it very clear," her husband said.
"So, do you also doubt whether our son is a bastard?" the woman coldly asked.
The couple were about to argue.
Tracy, with a flushed face, cursed, "What does it have to do with you?"
Suddenly, someone said, "Maybe they're not even brothers!"
The words came at just the right time, but I couldn't agree with them.
So, I could only explain, "They are brothers, just not by the same mother."
"That makes more sense!" Someone commented.
I pretended to be angry. "No way, don't talk nonsense. Carl divorced his first wife for my husband's half-brother back in the day."
"But the paternity test results can't lie!" Everyone agreed around me.
Soon, the onlookers split into two groups: one believed the child was not Evan's, and the other thought James and Evan were not brothers.
They were eager for me to share my opinion.
"I believe this child is not a descendant of Evan. James, right?"
James thought of something and nodded vigorously upon hearing my words, indicating that Tracy had tricked him.
Tracy couldn't accept this outcome.
The criticism from the onlookers had already angered her.
If she couldn't achieve her plan, then all her efforts would be in vain.
So she shoved the child into James' arms and ran off, almost bumping into Henry, who was coming in after finishing a call.
James, holding the child, looked at Henry and me, visibly panicked.
I sneered inwardly, "Already panicked? There's an even bigger surprise waiting for you later."
