Chapter 1
On the day there was an assassination attempt on the Don, my husband, the head of security for the Russo family, was busy coaxing his mistress, who had lost her temper and left.
I did not call him for help but used my body as a shield to protect the Don while I was eight months pregnant.
In my past life, my husband left his mistress behind and came back with his team of bodyguards to save the Don after I called him for help on the phone. My husband ended up saving the Don and was rewarded by the family with a promotion, but his mistress was killed in the process. Although my husband said nothing about it, he threw me into the shark tank on the day I was in labor.
I was covered in blood when I looked at him for an answer. However, all he did was stare coldly at me.
"Why did you have to get me to save the Don when he had so many other bodyguards to protect him? You forced me to come back because you're a materialistic woman who only wants fame and fortune! If it weren't for your phone call, Aurora wouldn't have died! You must pay for everything she suffered!"
I ended up being torn apart by sharks, and even the baby inside my belly was not spared.
When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the day of the assassination attempt on the Don.
"Protect the Don!"
I instinctively took a step back when I saw the professional snipers in front of me. I had been reborn, and I had returned to when all of this started.
When I realized this, I lowered my hand to see my hand gripping the phone. No one was paying attention to me, so I flung the phone hard into the water fountain at the side, and I gave everything I had to shield Frank Russo from the sniper he was fighting with.
Frank watched in shock as I shielded him with my body, taking a bullet that was aimed at him. The look in his eyes turned from astonishment to incredulity and admiration. That was when I knew my gamble had paid off.
My husband, Victor Villani, was the head of security of the Russo family, and he had to always stay by the Don's side. However, he was missing in action on this very day when there was an assassination attempt against Frank, and it was because he was busy cajoling his mistress, Aurora Blanco, who had left in a huff.
In my past life, I was worried that Victor would get punished for abandoning his post, so I called him to hurry back. Victor saved Frank and was rewarded for his bravery, but he accused me of being materialistic and caused Aurora's death, so he threw our baby and me into the shark tank.
The heavens were kind enough to let me be reborn, and I could not repay that by going down the same road.
I did not budge from shielding Frank. I clenched my teeth and took it silently, even when the bullets hit me. Frank had many bodyguards. All I had to do was hold on until they arrived, and I would survive.
Frank knew that as well, which meant that no matter how reluctant he was, he could only hide behind me.
The assassins started to realize that I was shielding Frank with my body, and they looked at each other before aiming their rifles at my belly.
I was eight months pregnant, and I could feel my body kick me nearly every day. I could still hear him crying, even when I was on the brink of death in my past life. That shot at my belly hurt worse than being torn apart by sharks. I could not hold back the miserable scream gurgling in my throat, and all I could see was red. I could tell that the assassin was about to shoot me.
Intense pain tore me apart as warm blood dripped from my skirt onto the ground, creating dark stains where it touched. I gritted my teeth and held my belly, as I felt my baby stop moving after fidgeting in my belly for a while.
Fear gripped my heart. All I could hear was bullets ricocheting in the air, ringing in my ear as bodyguards rushed toward us while shouting. My consciousness started fading, and the last thing I saw was Frank holding me with reddened eyes as he roared at the bodyguards running toward us, "Get a doctor! Quick! Get me all the best doctors. Right now!"
I opened my mouth, trying to say something, but all I did was cough up more blood. Frank did not flinch as he continued holding me. "Which family do you belong to? Don't be afraid. The doctors will be here soon."
With every last strength in my body, I wheezed, "I'm… the wife… of the head of security… Victor Villani."
Chapter 2
After squeezing out those words, I finally passed out from exhaustion.
The doctor gave me an injection as he wiped away the cold sweat from his brow. "Don't fall asleep, madam. You won't wake up again if you do. Think about your husband and your children. They're all waiting for you!"
Frank tried to make me stay awake as well. "The doctor is right. You did well by protecting me. Once you're treated, I'll reward you and the baby in your belly. I'll take him in as my godson. You need to hold on! I've gotten my men to get Victor!"
My lips twitched when I heard Frank's words. I was not a fool. I knew from the moment that I shielded Frank from being shot that I had lost the baby. As for Victor, he would never show up.
That was when the men Frank sent out to get Victor hurried back. He went on his knees with a thud and did not dare to look at Frank. Frank frowned as he asked furiously, "Where's Victor?!"
Frank's subordinate stammered, "V-Victor Villani refused to come. He said that Mrs. Villani should not use tactics like this to earn his sympathy."
I knew right away that Victor must have said worse things to the man, but he did not dare repeat them in front of Frank. I was nothing compared to how important Aurora was to Victor, even though I was his legitimate wife, while Aurora was just his mistress.
Victor had abandoned his duties and left Frank in danger by taking away his entire team of bodyguards just because he wanted to cheer up Aurora.
When I called Victor to ask him to hurry back in the past, he accused me of being greedy for fame and fortune. This time, Frank had personally sent his men to get Victor, and still ended up being ignored. If Victor loved Aurora so much, why did he even marry me?
The thought angered me, and it only made me cough up more blood. The doctor pushed back his glasses, which almost fell off, and looked cautiously at Frank. "Don Russo, Mrs. Villani is too emotional. She might not make it if she doesn't have any kin staying by her side."
Frank glanced at me and held his temper back as he pulled off a cross from his neck to give it to his subordinate. "Take this and tell him that it's an order from me. If he still refuses to come, he will no longer be part of this family!"
He was furious. Despite having many bodyguards, none of them were around today when there was an assassination attempt on him. I had protected him with my life, yet he could not even get my husband to appear. This was a great insult for a mafia Don.
As I was unable to move, the doctor had to make sure I survived until the paramedics arrived by putting me on a strongly medicated drip. I could still hear the doctor's voice when the bodyguard returned, but he was not alone.
Chapter 3
It was not easy for me to finally open my eyes to see who it was, and I immediately saw someone very familiar from my past life. It was Aurora's maid, Leia.
Leia was actually my maid, but after I got pregnant, she started adding peanut butter to my food, which I was allergic to. By the time I realized what she did, I was on the brink of dying. I refused to let Leia get away with it, but just as I was about to kick her out of the family, Victor entered the room with his arms around Aurora.
I could still remember the cold look Victor gave me. He acted as if I were not his wife but a nemesis.
Aurora sobbed until her voice was hoarse and grabbed Leia's hand while looking at me pitifully. "How can you be so cruel, Isabella? Aren't you still alive? Why must you kick Leia out of the family? She'll die if she leaves. It's a horrible thing you're doing to her! Why don't you let Leia work for me instead, Victor? I can't bear to see Isabella kicking her out."
Victor turned to Aurora and sighed helplessly. "You're always so soft-hearted. Aurora is right, Isabella. Why must you be so petty when you're still alive? Let Aurora have Leia, and stop making a huge fuss over small issues like this in the future.
I stared incredulously at Victor. I was pregnant with his baby, and I almost died from an anaphylactic shock, yet he felt that I should not hold it against Leia just because I did not die. This did not make sense at all!
However, I was still very in love with Victor then, and I was convinced that Aurora was the one who was manipulating him into this. I thought I should have a bigger heart because I was Victor's legitimate wife while Aurora was just a disreputable mistress, which was why I tolerated the behavior.
This continued until the day I overheard Victor's conversation with Aurora. His eyes were filled with adoration when he was speaking to her. "Don't be so obvious the next time you put peanut butter into her food. I won't help you again if you're discovered again the next time."
Aurora hugged Victor's arm as she said coquettishly, "I know, I know. I'm really grateful to you this time."
Leia was smiling next to them as this was happening, and they looked so cozy being together. Chills ran down my spine when I realized I was the only one unaware of what was happening.
I was filled with intense hatred, and seeing Leia again only made me extremely agitated.
However, Leia interpreted my reaction as a sign of fear. She was initially reserved but gradually started to show her true colors. "Mr. Villani has already said that he would be keeping Ms. Blanco company, Mrs. Villani. As for you, you're alive, aren't you? Stop harassing him, or he'll divorce you right away. Not only that, he'll make the baby inside you call Ms. Blanco his mother instead.
"Mr. Villani has also made it clear that he never loved you. He married you because of the money and power your family has, and it helped him stabilize his position within the family. You should consider yourself lucky that he is kind enough to keep you around now that he is head of security in the family. Cause any further trouble and death will be the only thing awaiting you!"
Frank's face fell after listening to what Leia said. He smashed the glass in his hand on the ground, and all his men immediately knelt behind him when they heard the commotion. However, Leia was oblivious to everything that was happening.
Leia continued taunting me openly with glee, "Stop wasting your time, Mrs. Villani. Your little scheme of hurting yourself to gain Mr. Villani's sympathy isn't working at all. It's a mistake to think that you can make Mr. Villani jealous with this side piece. I'll be honest with Mr. Villani and tell him that you're cheating on him with this gigolo when you're still pregnant. What do you think Mr. Villani will do once he finds out about this? Tear you apart or feed you to the sharks?"
She was basking in delight with her insults and had mistaken Frank for the man I was committing adultery with because he had changed into normal black clothes after his suit was dirtied during the assassination attempt.
Frank's expression had turned dark. He sneered and ordered the bodyguards who had arrived to hold Leia down. Leia panicked, and she tried to say something when she realized what had just happened, but the bodyguards gagged her and dragged her off.
"Throw her into the shark tank and show Victor the body after that. I'd like to know how powerful Victor is to be able to let Ms. Abba suffer such humiliation!"
I blinked in surprise when I heard Frank calling me 'Ms. Abba'. He was treating me as a separate entity from Victor. I knew then that I had made the right move.
