Chapter 1 of I Wrote His Oscars, Then Sold My Name Elsewhere

Seven scripts, two Oscars, eighteen years—and not one credit with my name on it.

I sat in the dark theater watching my husband thank another woman for "giving his characters a soul."

The soul was mine.

Every line he wept through, every monologue that made millions sob, I wrote at our kitchen table while he slept.

Our deal was simple: I write, you perform, and when we make it, we make it public—together.

He made it.

What he made public was Nina, his drama-school love, his co-star, his "muse."

My own son begged me to stay away from the set on his sixteenth birthday.

He said the crew thought his father was single, that I'd be an embarrassment, that Aunt Nina belonged beside him and I didn't.

So last year, I stopped writing.

Three flops later, the critics said the magic was gone.

My husband panicked and demanded a new script; my son told me to do it for this family.

For this family.

Fine.

I sold my new screenplay under my real name and cast an unknown boy who looked exactly like my husband at twenty.

Tonight the film took Best Picture, the boy took Best Actor, and when they read the name behind Best Original Screenplay, the camera found my husband's tilting glass.

I walked up and pulled the microphone close.

I thanked one person—my ex-husband—for performing my words for twenty years.

From now on, my words don't need his face.

I clutched the invitation, the gold-foil words "Julian Castell with Muse Nina Reyes" digging into my fingertips until the skin throbbed.

The theater remained dark in the back row where I sat. Up front, a sea of diamonds and designer suits bathed in the stage lights. Julian stood at the podium. He gripped his second Best Actor trophy, the polished gold reflecting in his dark eyes.

"I owe this to one person," Julian said into the microphone. His voice carried that familiar, gravelly cadence I designed for him.

The audience fell completely silent.

"To the woman who gave my characters their soul," he continued, his tone thick with practiced emotion.

The camera panned right. The massive screens above the stage filled with Nina Reyes. She wore a crimson gown, pressing a manicured hand to her chest. Tears shone perfectly in her eyes.

The crowd erupted. A standing ovation.

I opened the leather-bound notebook resting on my knees. The pages were worn, filled with my blue ink. Right there, on page forty-two, sat the exact monologue Julian just delivered. I wrote it eighteen years ago at our wobbly kitchen table while he slept off a hangover. The margins held the original timestamps of seven different scripts. Every award he ever won, every iconic line he ever spoke, came from these pages.

A woman next to me leaned over, clapping loudly. "Aren't they just the perfect couple?" she shouted over the applause.

"They are," I said. My voice sounded completely hollow.

My phone vibrated against my thigh.

I pulled the device from my purse. A new text from my son, Caleb.

Did you see Dad win?

I stared at the glowing screen. Right above his new text sat the message from his birthday last year. The one I never deleted.
