Chapter 1

My name was Serena Hart. On the same day I was diagnosed with cervical cancer, I found out that I was pregnant.

I was on my way to find Andy Parham with two reports when I encountered a landslide.

I was buried under the rubble with the car, and when I opened my eyes, it was already two days later.

My phone was dying. I called Andy for help.

But I heard the voice of a woman, full of tenderness. She was the love of his life.

"Andy, your fiancee wants to talk to you."

Andy's hoarse voice echoed in the cramped space.

"I've even taken off my pants. Stop bringing her up! What a bummer! Get over here!"

I was in agony, but I still begged him to save me. He coldly refused me amidst the sound of water.

"Nothing is more important than the present moment!"

I listened to the busy tone and laughed at myself.

He's right. Nothing can stand in his way of getting intimate with her, even though I'm dying!

With the collapse, the car and I were buried even deeper.

The screen of the phone went dark, and I closed my eyes in despair!

***

In the darkness, I seemed to hear someone digging something.

When I opened my eyes, I was lying in the hospital bed, and my baby inside was as tough as me.

When I was going through the discharge procedures, I unexpectedly found that my boyfriend Andy was taking care of the woman he loved in the ward.

Maggie Ramos leaned weakly in Andy's arms, and he gently blew the soup, feeding her spoon by spoon.

When the soup overflowed from the corner of her mouth, he indulgently wiped it clean for her, and then he scraped the tip of her nose with affection.

I was with him for seven years, and it was the first time I knew he could be this caring and gentle.

He was never the rough man he claimed to be. He just didn't bother to care about me.

The piercing pain spread throughout my body. I clenched the report in my pocket and went to the doctor.

At that moment, I made up my mind to keep the baby and deal with the cancer after the baby was born.

The fact that my baby survived meant it wanted to be with me.

Besides, it might be the only child I ever had.

As for Andy? I'd treat the seven years I wasted on him as the price of borrowing his semen.

However, Andy saw me through the small window on the door.

He whispered a few words in Maggie's ear and then walked out of the ward with a cold face. When he closed the door, he gave her a reassuring gesture.

"Why are you here?"

He thought I was following him and came to the hospital to confront him.

He frowned tightly, clearly indicating that he was angry.

If he had cared a bit about me, he should have noticed my pale lips and the obvious gauze on my arm.

He always had a keen sense of smell, but he didn't smell the medicine on me.

"Why do you care?"

My indifferent tone, to him, sounded like I was throwing a tantrum.

He suppressed his anger and scolded me unhappily.

"Do you have nothing else to do besides following me all day?

"Do you know that this kind of twisted love is suffocating?

"I'll let you off today. You may contribute. Now that you're here, donate bone marrow to Maggie! I already had the doctor run a bone marrow match between you two. You're a match. Besides, you two are blood relatives. You're the most suitable one."

"So, should I thank you for giving me this opportunity?"

It turned out that was what he used the unlabeled blood for during my physical checkup.

He only cared about the result of the match. He didn't give a damn about my body, and of course, he didn't know I was pregnant with his child.

Maggie and I had the same father but different mothers. She was his favorite.

And I became her substitute because I bore some resemblance to her.

Now, I had become the cure for her illness!

At the freshman orientation, Andy and I met for the first time. He played the guitar and confessed his love to me passionately. He said he fell in love with me at first sight.

Under the starry sky, the flashlight of the phones flickered, and everyone shouted.

"Be together! Be together!"

That scene was just like a love proposal in a fairy tale, and I was moved.

Later, I found out that my father had an illegitimate daughter, who happened to be the love of Andy's life.

He confessed to me just to make up for the regret of his unrequited love. She was his first love.

"Maggie is your elder sister. You shouldn't interfere in the grievances of the previous generation. I helped her because of you. Can't you be sensible and forgiving?"

Saying that, he called the doctor, Warwick Vargas.

"Dr. Vargas, my fiancee is here. I will bring her to the operating room now."

I just went through a disaster. The doctor said I had to get enough rest because of the baby.

If I had a bone marrow transplant now, I might lose the baby. Even if I managed to keep it, its development would be affected.

Moreover, because of the existence of Maggie and her mother, my mother had been depressed for a long time. I would never agree to donate bone marrow to Maggie.

"If you want to help her that much, donate yours! I don't care if she dies!"

Due to agitation, my abdomen was slightly painful. I didn't want to look at Andy again.

When I turned around to leave, he grabbed me and threw the weak me against the wall.

I curled up in pain, and Andy looked down on me.

"Enough! Drop the act. I didn't use much force!

"As long as you donate bone marrow to Maggie, I will marry you after she goes abroad! Haven't you always wanted to have children with me? After we get married, we can have a son and a daughter."

After saying that, he made a phone call in front of me and booked our wedding banquet on the island I wanted to go to the most.

"See? I keep my promises. If you have any other requests, tell me. I will say yes to all!"

I wiped away the tears that flew out because of the physical pain and stood up, enduring the pain.

Andy still seemed like the affectionate Prince Charming who confessed his love to me, but I'd never be the one he loved.

Chapter 2

His condescending tone made me realize that my seven years of love was a joke.

I figured that he had long forgotten why I was so determined to have his child.

When Andy's family fell into decline and was haunted by debt collectors every day, I tried my best to pay his debts as soon as possible. So, I worked three jobs during the day and lived with him in the cheapest basement in town at night. For three months in a row, I didn't eat meat. I let him eat all the meat. But since I didn't want him to be guilty, I told him that I was full.

Misfortunes never came singly. He was diagnosed with leukemia later. Disheartened, he let the debt collectors beat him. I was the one who protected him, and they didn't let us off until my lower part was bleeding.

Our first baby died.

My blood type was a match for his, and I saved his life.

The doctor told us that just in case, I should keep the umbilical cord blood of the child. Maybe it'd be useful at a critical moment.

Before the accident, I made up my mind to hide the fact that I had cancer from him. I wanted to leave him with a child, who would give him hope as well.

"Take your dirty hands off!"

Andy smiled instead of getting angry.

"Serena, you're actually disgusted by me?"

In Andy's eyes, I saw undisguised disgust.

It turned out that he still remembered those things.

He had been cornered and attacked countless times, and I was always the one who called the police and came to save him at critical moments.

Those debt collectors couldn't collect the debt, so they vented their anger on me by getting handsy.

Although there was no substantial harm, it made me extremely humiliated.

At that time, I had to take several cold showers before Andy would hold me.

He didn't care why I used cold water. When I said I was used to using cold water, he bought it and then hugged me while I was shivering. Then he had sex with me.

At that time, I found redemption in his passion, thinking that he wasn't disgusted by me.

During those painful days, I was the only one willing to be by his side. We were as poor as beggars.

He knew very well that I loved him enough to give up my life.

Now he threatened me with what I cared about the most, but there was one thing he didn't know. I, who had miraculously survived, would no longer put my life in his hands.

"Serena, don't challenge my patience, or I may immediately cancel the engagement!"

"Whatever."

Just as I finished speaking, Maggie came out, her eyes tearful.

"Andy said he has found a match for me. So, it's you, Serena! Sure enough, you're my family. I'll be grateful to you forever!"

Maggie sniffed and spread her arms to hug me.

I stepped back and pushed her hands away.

Maggie took the opportunity to lean backward and almost fell down, but Andy quickly caught her in his arms.

"Serena! How could you be so cruel? She is your sister! Apologize to her!"

"My mom only gave birth to me. I don't have a sister!"

I stubbornly lifted my chin and refused to give in.

This was the first time I didn't listen to him.

"Andy, forget it. Serena is young and has been spoiled since childhood. Don't be annoyed by her temper. As her older sister, I won't get upset with her over a trivial matter. Donating bone marrow has risks. It's normal that she's scared. Maybe I can wait for the next successful match."

Maggie leaned against Andy's arms, looking like she was dying.

Andy immediately covered Maggie's hand back with pity.

"What's to be afraid of? When she donated bone marrow to me, she didn't even blink. She's experienced."

After saying that, when he looked at me, he frowned impatiently again.

"Serena, I've already arranged this. You don't want to be an indifferent murderer, do you?"

The veins on his tightly clenched hands were bulging.

I knew he had completely lost his patience.

In the past, as long as he clenched his fists, regardless of who was right or wrong, I would immediately compromise and coax him.

But now, I didn't want to grovel anymore.

Since my bone marrow matched successfully with Maggie's, then Andy's would work, too.

He could sacrifice himself to save his loved one.

When I ignored his anger and left, he roared at me.

"Serena! If you dare to leave, we're done for good!"

He counted down, but I didn't look back.

He snapped his fingers, and a group of people took me away.

Chapter 3

My mouth was covered, and I was forcibly taken to the operating room.

The prepared doctor immediately injected me with a sedative and anesthetic before they let go of my hands and feet.

Andy watched me, and I felt like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered.

It turned out that even though he was certain that I would donate bone marrow because of him, he still made a thorough plan B for Maggie.

I struggled to get out of bed and lost my balance, knocking over the surgical instruments.

The surgical knife fell and stabbed directly into the upper of Maggie's shoe.

I wished it had stabbed her flesh instead. But Andy's face turned completely sullen.

"Serena, that's enough! Don't go too far!"

After saying that, he squatted down, took her shoe off, held her foot in his hands, and examined it so carefully as if it were some kind of precious treasure.

"Maggie, I was so freaked out. Are you OK? You must be terrified."

Was that Andy, the clean freak?

He was almost kissing Maggie's foot.

He really loved Maggie. He asked me to brush my teeth three times before kissing me, but he didn't mind Maggie's foot odor.

I suddenly burst into tears of laughter.

Andy, however, thought that I was mocking Maggie and became furious with me.

"Serena, I have already promised to give you two children and arranged the wedding banquet according to your preferences. What more do you want?"

It turned out that marrying me and having children with me was him pitying me!

He made such a great sacrifice. That was why he figured he was so qualified and righteous to pay off the doctor and make me donate my bone marrow.

"Are you deaf? I said it already. If you love her so much, donate yours. I will never save her even if I die! We are done, so don't talk about jokes like getting married again."

"You won't donate? Do you think it's up to you to decide?"

After Andy was rich again, he resumed his previous noble demeanor and became colder and more ruthless towards others. He only treated me slightly differently.

But not anymore.

After saying that, he and the nurse pressed me onto the operating table again.

Even though I had already lost the ability to resist, Andy still tightly clutched my wrist.

"Get started!"

When my clothes were lifted up, and the doctor approached with a bone marrow needle, I desperately begged Andy.

"I'm pregnant, and I have cancer. This will kill me and the baby!"

Andy seemed to hear a big joke and scorned.

"I had a vasectomy. How could you be pregnant? And do you think cancer is a cold? You won't have cancer so easily."

I widened my eyes in disbelief.

He didn't like using protections and didn't want me to secretly stop taking birth control pills, so he went so far as to have a vasectomy to prevent me from trapping him with a child?

The needle had already lightly pierced the skin, and I, who was always sensitive to anesthesia, trembled uncontrollably.

"Andy, I'm not lying to you. The result report of the checkup is in my pocket. See for yourself. And you'll know I'm not lying!"

The doctor stopped the injection and asked him with a frown.

"You should be sure if she's pregnant or not first. If she really is..."

Andy's nails embedded deeply into my wrist, causing me pain, but he continued to exert more force.

"The baby hasn't formed. It should feel grateful because it can save a person's life! It's worth it!"

I felt coldness all over.

"Please! This is my last baby! I won't be able to get pregnant again."

I wanted to take out the report in my pocket, but I had no strength at all.

Maggie held Andy's arm and looked at me with pity and sorrow.

"Serena, it won't hurt now that you're under anesthesia. If you want to cry, go ahead, No one will laugh at you."

After glancing at the phone, the doctor no longer tried to persuade them.

The needle pierced into my body, but it didn't hurt at all.

As the bone marrow was drawn out, I felt something slowly flowing away from my body.

In the long wait, I couldn't speak.

To ensure success, Andy had the doctor draw twice the amount.

The doctor had already left, but I still curled up on the operating table like a living dead.

Andy came back to see me after sending Maggie to the ward.

He picked me up and frowned, asking me.

"You lost weight again? Stop secretly losing weight anymore. Being too bony will only make my hands hurt. If you're too skinny, you won't look good in a wedding dress. After Maggie finishes the surgery, we will have a grand wedding on the island. I will fulfill all the promises I made to you. By the way, I will have the surgery later to be fertile again. Be healthy so that you can give birth to my children."

He looked at me tenderly and affectionately as if he weren't the one who forcibly pressed his body against mine so that the doctor could draw my bone marrow.

When he tried to lean in to kiss me, I dodged away.

My face began to distort, and the abdominal pain made me gasp.

He didn't know that behind him, there was a winding trail of blood, glaring red.

His personal bodyguard, Shawn Porter, was the first to notice that the blood was dripping from me.

"Mr. Parham! Blood!

"Mrs. Parham ... is bleeding profusely!"
