Chapter 3

The sunrise broke over the skyline, casting sharp golden light across the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Vance Defense Command Center.

Seventy floors above the city, the muted hum of satellite uplinks and encrypted servers replaced the suffocating chill of the Miller family wine cellar.

I stood by the window, wearing a tailored black silk trench coat over a fresh shirt. The bruised ache along my jaw remained, but the exhaustion from the past three years had vanished entirely.

Kieran walked up behind me and set a porcelain cup of steaming black tea on the glass console.

"Julian Miller went straight to the Metropolitan Police Department two hours ago," Kieran said, his tone flat and even. "He told the chief of detectives that you hired underground mercenaries with high-interest loan money to stage a violent escape from the estate."

A faint, cold laugh slipped past my lips. "Of course he did."

"Evelyn stayed by his side the entire morning, weeping for the cameras," Kieran continued. "With Mrs. Miller calling in favors at City Hall, the police obtained an arrest warrant and issued a statewide fugitive bulletin in your name. As of seven-thirty this morning, Selena Miller is officially wanted for vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run."

"He really thinks he can bury me under his sister's crime," I said, taking a sip of the tea.

"Julian is arrogant because he has never faced a true predator," Kieran replied.

He tapped the screen of an ultra-thin tactical tablet and handed it to me.

On the high-resolution display, three distinct data streams ran simultaneously.

The first was the raw, unedited traffic footage from the mountain highway at 7:14 PM. It showed Evelyn’s red sports coupe swerving wildly across double yellow lines at over ninety miles per hour before slamming into the sedan carrying Senator Bradley’s son.

The second window showed the interior club cameras forty minutes prior, capturing Evelyn downing straight bourbon before stumbling toward the valet.

The third file was a crystal-clear audio recording from our penthouse living room the night before. Julian’s voice rang through the tablet's speakers, demanding that I take the fall, followed by the sound of his mother smashing the soup pot and the private security guards forcing my thumb into the red inkpad.

"The Miller family paid three city officials eight hundred thousand dollars to wipe the municipal servers," Kieran said. "We recovered the mirror archives from an off-site disaster-recovery server maintained by a Vance cybersecurity subsidiary under its city contract before their technicians could erase the backups."

"Keep the files locked down for now," I said, handing the tablet back to him. "Releasing the footage immediately would be too clean. Julian needs to feel his foundation crack from the bottom first."

"Send the authenticated originals under seal to the prosecutor and the state judge," I added. "I want the false warrant vacated, but nothing released to the press yet."

"What are your orders, Eldest Miss?"

I set the teacup down on the console, my voice dropping to a calm, icy whisper.

"Execute Directive Zero. Under the master sovereign authority of the Vance Defense Master Fund, revoke every institutional guarantee we hold over the Miller Group."

Kieran’s eyes hardened. "All of them?"

"Every single one," I said. "Cut their strategic defense equipment clearances at the docks. Suspend our maritime logistics umbrella, and instruct our private banking consortium to call in their short-term credit facilities immediately."

"Understood."

Kieran stepped over to the main terminal, entered his biometric key, and authorized the command.

The retaliation took less than eight minutes to hit the real world.

On the central command monitor, Kieran opened the live audio from the Miller Group’s emergency lender conference line, which our banking consortium was authorized to monitor.

Julian’s voice boomed over the speaker, irritated and breathless. "What is so urgent, Frank? I told you I’m coordinating with the police commissioner!"

"Julian, we’re finished!" Frank, the Miller Group’s chief financial officer, sounded like a man standing on the edge of a cliff. "The South Coast port authority just placed holds on forty containers carrying our advanced navigation components! Customs cited the suspension of our defense-clearance guarantee!"

Julian slammed his fist onto his mahogany desk. "That’s impossible! We’ve held that sovereign clearance for two years!"

"It gets worse," Frank shouted, his voice cracking with panic. "The banking consortium led by Vance Global Capital just froze every operational liquidity line we own! They’ve declared our enterprise at high credit risk and are demanding full repayment of our two-hundred-million-dollar bridge loan by noon!"

"What did you say?" Julian stammered, the smug confidence draining instantly from his voice. "Where is the board? Call the regional directors! Offer them equity!"

"No one is answering our calls!" Frank yelled. "Julian, the markets open in thirty minutes! If we can't show cash reserves to satisfy the debt call, the Miller Group stock could trigger a volatility halt at the open! We may be unable to meet our obligations by the end of the day!"

The line cut off with a sharp click.

A heavy, terrified silence lingered over Julian’s end of the feed before the sound of glass shattering echoed through his office.

Standing in the command center, I watched the live financial tickers flash red on the giant screens. The empire Julian had always claimed he built with his own brilliance was unraveling like cheap paper.

He had spent three years treating me like a stray he rescued from the gutter, entirely blind to the reality that my silent signature was the only thing keeping his company afloat.

Kieran stepped back to my side, holding a black leather folder.

"Julian is scrambling for any available life raft," Kieran reported. "His secretary just confirmed his attendance for the Annual Police Foundation Charity Gala tonight at the Grand Horizon Hotel."

"The charity gala," I murmured, recalling the invitation that had arrived at the penthouse a week ago.

"Julian believes the rumors," Kieran said, a rare, faint smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "The media reported that the supreme director of Vance Global Defense and our newly appointed Chief Strategic Advisor will make a joint public appearance at the gala tonight. Julian thinks if he can personally hand over a multi-million-dollar gift and secure an audience, Vance Global will renew his credit lines."

"He thinks he can charm his way out of a death sentence," I said.

"Julian’s assistant just withdrew five million dollars in vintage jewelry from their family vault to present as an introductory offering," Kieran added. "He is bringing Evelyn with him to handle social pleasantries."

I turned toward the glass window, looking out over the sprawling city below.

Julian was desperately clinging to a ghost, rushing toward the only power capable of crushing him into dust, convinced it would be his salvation.

"Prepare my car for eight o'clock," I said quietly. "And inform the security detail at the Grand Horizon that the Chief Advisor will accept Julian Miller's gift in person."
