Chapter 1 of I Saved Him From Fire, He Claimed Me in Return(1)

Night had barely settled when chaos erupted. The air was thick with smoke. It rolled through the narrow alleyways of the Industrial Slums like a living beast, curling around the rusted roofs and sagging walls of homes packed too close together. Children screamed. Pots clattered. Somewhere, glass shattered. Doors slammed open as families dragged buckets of water, their frantic shouts mixing with the roar of flames. A voice shouted hoarsely, “Fire! Get out! Run!”

Selene Aragon was only twelve, a wiry girl with soot-streaked cheeks, but she had learned long ago that panic could kill faster than flames. She gripped her grandmother’s hand, pulling her toward the exit of their cramped home. The old woman coughed violently, her frail frame trembling. “Go ahead, child—leave me,” she wheezed.

“Never!” Selene spat, dragging her forward. Her lungs burned, but she refused to let go. They stumbled into the open street where neighbors were already fleeing. Smoke swallowed the world above, hiding the night sky.

That was when she heard it— a boy’s voice, crying for help.

It cut through the chaos like a blade. Selene whipped her head around. Across the street, half-hidden by smoke, a boy no older than her clung to the frame of a collapsing doorway. His shirt was torn, his small hands raw from clawing at wood. He coughed violently, eyes wide with terror as the fire licked closer.

No one else seemed to notice him. The people were too busy saving themselves.

Selene shoved her grandmother toward a neighbor. “Take her to safety!” she begged. Without waiting for an answer, she sprinted across the street. Heat seared her cheeks. Behind her, Selene glimpsed the neighbor hauling Lola away through the smoke, her frail body half-dragged but alive. Relief punched through her chest even as she plunged toward the boy’s cry. Sparks rained down like angry stars.

The boy saw her coming and shook his head frantically. “Don’t—! It’s going to fall!”

But Selene was already there. She grabbed his arm, yanking hard. The frame groaned as if alive, wood splintering, flames roaring. With one last tug, she hauled him free just as the doorway collapsed in a furious crash behind them. The boy stumbled into her arms, coughing so hard it shook his body.

“Come on!” she shouted, dragging him away.

They ran until the fire was a distant glow, replaced by the bitter stench of smoke clinging to their skin. Selene dropped him on the ground beneath a half-dead tree, her chest heaving. She bent forward, coughing violently, while the boy gasped beside her.

For a long moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breaths.

When he finally managed to speak, his voice was hoarse but firm. “You saved me.”

Selene brushed soot from her face, glaring at him. “You should’ve run sooner.”

“I was looking for my brother,” the boy admitted, lowering his gaze. His clothes were too fine for the slums, even torn and burned as they were—stitched with threads that caught the faint glow of firelight. His shoes, though scuffed, were clearly made of leather. Selene’s stomach twisted; she had never owned anything half as expensive.

The boy suddenly straightened, fixing his eyes on her. They were sharp, burning even in the dim light. “What’s your name?”

“Selene.”

“Selene,” he repeated, as though testing the sound. “I’ll remember it. I owe you my life.”

She waved him off. “Forget it. Just don’t do something stupid like that again.”

But he shook his head stubbornly, wiping soot from his cheek. “No. I won’t forget. One day, I’ll repay you. I swear it.”

Selene laughed despite the smoke still scratching her throat. “What are you going to do, buy me bread? You’re just a boy.”

“I’m not just a boy,” he said firmly, puffing his chest. “My name is Cyrus Navarro.”

The name meant little to Selene then. She had heard it whispered in the slums—wealth, power, trouble—but none of it connected to the soot-streaked boy coughing before her. The Navarros were one of the most powerful families in Arcanza, their name whispered in both fear and envy. All Selene saw was a boy her age, stubborn and too proud for his own good.

He leaned closer, voice dropping to something almost solemn. “When I grow up, I’ll make you mine. You saved me, Selene. That makes us bound. It’s my oath.”

Her laughter broke through again, startled and amused. “That’s ridiculous. You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough,” he replied stubbornly. “I’ll find you again. And when I do, you’ll see—I always keep my word.” The conviction in his voice unsettled her more than the flames had. It didn’t sound like a child’s promise. It sounded like a vow carved into stone.

Selene shook her head, smiling faintly. “You’re strange.”

Maybe it was the smoke still choking her lungs, or the adrenaline thrumming through her veins, but something about his conviction lodged itself in her memory. A child’s promise, spoken with such gravity it felt heavier than it should have.

Before she could answer, people came rushing down the road—guards and officials in dark uniforms, calling Cyrus’s name. His face lit up with recognition, relief softening his features.

He turned back to her one last time. “I’ll never forget you, Selene Aragon.”

And then he was gone, swallowed by the world that had always been too far from hers.

Selene stood beneath the sickly tree, coughing, soot clinging to her hair, her palms blistered from fire. She had no way of knowing how much weight those words would carry. No way of knowing that this strange, soot-streaked boy would return years later, with the same burning eyes and the same promise—reshaped into something darker.

For now, he was only a ghost of a night wrapped in fire. A memory she expected to fade.

But memories have sharp edges. And some promises are forged not in innocence, but in ash.
