Chapter 2
As I stood outside the door, listening to my fiance cheat on me, several key memories started to flood my brain.
"You must have lost your mind." I remembered Sandra saying that the day I told her I met Dylan's sister in his office. “No sister sits on her brother’s lap like that.”
The memory was still clear to me. I had walked into Dylan's office to surprise him with a customized limited edition of the wristwatch that he had wanted.
He wasn't on his seat, so I sat there waiting, then a woman with brown hair and blue eyes walked in, smiling.
Her smile disappeared as she saw me. "What are you doing there?"
"Waiting for Dylan."
"And who gives you the right to sit on his chair?" She came to me and pulled me out of the chair. "Secretaries should not sit on their boss's chair."
"I'm not his secretary. I'm his girlfriend."
She paused then, looking at me from top to bottom. "You don't look like his girlfriend. Honestly, I expected someone much better looking."
I was about to speak when Dylan walked in. No doubt, he heard every exchange that passed by and I expected him to say something in my defense. Not that I needed it because I know I'm even more beautiful than my mother who participated in the Most Beautiful Woman contest in our country and won.
"Dylan, say something." I prompted when he just stood, staring at us with caution.
"Honey, meet my sister, Emily. Sister, meet the love of my life, Heather Willson."
"Oh." That was all Emily could say.
I glared at Dylan. "She just insulted me."
"No, I didn't." Emily held his arm like he was her husband. "I just stated the fact that she looks so plain for someone who comes from a wealthy family."
"Alright, Heather, don't be offended. Emily often says things she doesn't mean. You're more mature, you should learn to not let every little thing affect you."
Emily smiled and then sat on his laps while I was left standing and holding my gift.
And that was how it always was. Dylan expected her to make Emily happy.
Another memory flashed in her mind about two months ago.
I had called Dylan to ask if we could spend some time together because he had been very busy lately but he said no. It was almost like he was avoiding me all week. Finally, I gave up and decided to go to the mall with my friends.
We had only been in the mall for a few minutes, walking to the food court when I saw Emily and Dylan. They sat close to each other with one of his hands behind her back and the other around her waist. They leaned towards each other very closely. Dylan bent his head and now that I think about it, he could have been trying to kiss her.
Alexa’s voice stopped them. "Hey Dylan. What are you doing here?"
He sat up with a shock and pushed Emily's hand away from his waist. "Heather, Alexa, Sandra?"
"I thought you were at work?" I asked him.
"Yes, but Emily just called me. She said her grant was canceled. So, I had to rush to her."
"Really?" I could hear the judgmental tone in Sandra's voice.
Because two weeks ago, I told Dylan that I was in the hospital for a case of lung infection. He had not responded to my text messages. Neither did he come to see me. I had been in the hospital for twelve days fighting for my life but there was no comfort from Dylan.
"It's fine. The good thing is we're all here now." I was willing to share Dylan's presence with Emily if it meant that I could stay with him.
But she held his hand as he tried to stand and she shook her head.
"I can't leave Emily behind." Dylan said.
"She can come with us." I offered, because Dylan had often complained that I tried to keep Emily from coming closer to him.
"Yes, she can carry our things while we shop for Hermes and Birkin Bags." Alexa said.
"How dare you?" Emily slapped Alexa. "Because you think you have enough money, you want to downgrade me?"
Alexa held her face as her eyes widened. Emily had just slapped the third child and only daughter of the Rossetti Fuel Industry. I had to hold my friend back and beg her for my sake not to call the police because Dylan would be very mad if his sister was arrested. And my relationship with him wasn't very smooth then.
Dylan grabbed my hand just as I managed to calm Alexa down. "How could you let her say such things to my sister? Here you go, flaunting your wealth in our faces. Do you know that the cost of one of those bags is just what she needs for her grant? And I'm sure you will buy more than one."
"I wasn't the one who said it." I tried to defend him.
"But your friend did. Is that how you treat my family? How will you treat me when we're married? Come on Emily. Let's go somewhere else to think of how to solve your problem." Dylan said, grabbing Emily and turning to leave with her.
"Wait. I'll give her the money she needs for the grant." I bit my lips as I said that.
"You think you can just buy your way out of hurling insults? You don't have to keep reminding me and Dylan that we're poorer than you." Emily held behind Dylan's body.
I ignored the gasps and wishes of my friends as I added. "I'm sorry. Let me make it up to you. I'll buy you a birkin bag." I said.
And that's how life had been for us these past months. Emily would do something to annoy me. Dylan would yell at me if I reacted and I had to do something to please Emily and keep the peace in our relationship, hoping that Dylan would change and that things would get better when he proposed.
I was wrong.
Because now I could hear him having an orgasm in the room with the woman he considered his sister.
And I could hear her asking again. "Do you really want to marry Heather?"
"I will but it won't affect our relationship. You'll only be my number one."
With those words, my head started to spin and I fell to the floor.
Chapter 3
Lucky for me, Sandra was right behind me listening to every word. She caught me before I fell and she helped me to lean against the wall as I started to cry. I clamped my hand against my mouth to avoid my cries sounding out.
Sandra walked to the door with an angry face. I held her leg before she could open it. "Please, don't. If this comes out like this, I'll be a laughing stock."
Because everyone including my dad didn't like Dylan. They felt he was a scumbag and they had warned me. I thought they just didn't like poorer people.
"Fine." Sandra helped me to get to the garden.
Once we were in the middle of the garden, I collapsed on the floor with tears in my eyes. It had been years since I cried because daddy always made sure all of my needs were met. In fact, my greatest sorrow was Dylan. And Dad couldn't take him away from me because I had threatened to run away if he did.
"You should've let me confront them." Sandra dabbed my eyes with a handkerchief. Thank God, I was wearing waterproof make up or else, who knows what I would look like when I had to return to my birthday party now turned engagement disaster. "I just knew Dylan was no good. Doing this with his own sister?"
I sat on one of the cement benches and shook my head. "Not his sister. Not by blood. She was adopted."
"Still." Sandra threw her hands in the air and started pacing.
I looked at the ring on my finger. In less than two hours, my greatest joy had become my biggest sorrow. What hurts more was what was said as Sandra tried to carry me away from the door.
Emily had asked, "Why do you want to marry her if I'm your first and only love?"
"Because she's the heir of a vast fortune. Her father is half-dead and do you know what would happen if she were to 'accidentally' fall down the well in the garden? Dylan explained. "I'd get half of her fortune if she were still alive but all is better than none."
Emily laughed at his words.
I couldn't believe that she found my death funny. And that Dylan, the man I had loved with my whole heart, was planning to kill me to take my fortune.
I threw his ring on the grass. "Those fools. Do they think it would be so easy to kill me?"
"You could end their lives." Sandra sat beside me on the bench, comforting me by stroking my hair.
“I’m not going to stoop to their level and commit murder.”
"We could hire some boxers to punch the daylight out of them? Or some kidnappers to hide them in the cellar and beat them till they confess all they've done to you. Better yet, you could get your lawyer to sue them. Collect everything they've got. After all you've invested in both of them, their businesses practically belong to you."
"That's too easy, Sandra." I said, as a plan started to form in my head while I looked at the well that was not too far away. " If I get guys to beat them up, they'll heal after a couple of weeks and forget it. I want to destroy them."
"Good. We'll start by breaking the engagement."
I shook my head. "No. They'll walk away without regret. I want them to feel every area of pain that they've forced me to. What I want to do will make sure that they never ever forget what they've done to me."
Sandra held my hands. "You have a crazy look in your eyes but I like it."
"I'm going to give them everything they want. I'll let him get as close to his plan as possible and then when they're very secure, I'll snatch it away from under their feet."
"I'm so happy we saw his true colors before the wedding. So, what are you going to do?"
I explained my plan to Sandra and she smiled. I knew she would also share the plan to Alexa and all of our other friends that did not like him. Especially Alexa. She had been looking for a way to pay back Emily because of the slap from a while ago.
"I still think we should get some men to beat them up."
"Sandra, if he was able to lie about his relationship with his sister for so long, it would be very easy for him to convince the police that we made up this accusation. I cannot allow my family's name to be dragged through the mud."
"By the time I'm done with them, there would be no canopy large enough to hide the shame of their deceit."
"Yes, it's time to get into action."
I returned to my manor through the backdoor and headed to my room to retouch my makeup. Once I was done, I descended the stairs into the ballroom where my guests were drinking and networking.
This is the first phase of ruining my own wedding: Creating and destroying Dylan's allies.
Dylan and Emily stood in a corner because they had not quite been accepted by my friends and relatives. Dylan had the decency to shower and change his clothes while Emily was still dressed in a pale pink dress that showed obvious signs of a wrinkle.
I kept my face straight as I walked to them, then placed air kisses on both sides of Dylan's face, careful not to touch him.
"Baby, you look so gorgeous."
"Me? I'm pale compared to Emily."
Emily's face reddened and she stared at me with shock. So did Dylan. I had never offered a compliment to her without it being forced from me.
"Since we're family now, I think it's time you got to meet my friends. Most of these people will be good for your business, Dylan."
The idiot took my hand and followed me into the trap that had been set for him.
