Chapter 1 of I Lost My Child to Him—Now He Loses Everything

My husband brought me to a clinic for an abortion just to soothe his mistress. He gripped my wrist so tightly I thought my bones would crack.

“I barely even touch you. Who even knows whose child that is?!” he barked. “And Nerissa hasn’t replied to me in three days because of your pregnancy! Fix it!”

I tried to pull away, begging him to stop, but when I refused, he shoved me. I tumbled from the second floor, and everything went black.

When I came to, the baby that once moved inside me was gone. My right leg was shattered, held together with screws and metal. I used to be a famous ballet dancer. Now there was no stage, no lights—just pain.

He entered later in a black suit like he ruled something darker than the world itself, then tossed divorce papers onto my blanket.

“Sign it. Nerissa’s anxious about us. I need her calm,” he said, tapping the signature line. “Five hundred million dollars in cash. Enough for a comfortable life, even with that crippled leg. Isn’t that generous?”

I nodded and signed with trembling hands. He stared at me like I had insulted him by agreeing.

“While this divorce is cooling off, don’t let me hear rumors of you with another man,” he warned coldly before slamming the door so hard the room shook.

Rafael—the feared mafia heir.

Rafael—the man who promised me forever.

Rafael—the one who exchanged our child for three unread messages from another woman.

After he left, I heard his voice outside speaking to the doctor, cold and absolute.

“When the anesthesia wears off, don’t give her anything for the pain. Understood? Let her feel it. She needs to learn.”

My tears came without restraint. I curled on the bed like something discarded, my hands drifting to my stomach. It was still warm, still soft—but hollow. The life that had been there was gone because its father thought my suffering would make his mistress respond.

Five years of marriage. Three years before that of believing his promises of forever. And now this.

A nurse came in later to change my bandages. She froze when she saw my tears.

“It’s time, Mrs. Carrington.”

“I’m not Mrs. Carrington anymore,” I whispered. My voice didn’t sound alive.

She avoided my eyes and unwrapped the gauze. My leg looked wrecked—bent, stitched, destroyed. I had tried to shield my belly when I fell, but it hadn’t mattered.

Pain surged again. “It hurts… can I have painkillers?” I asked weakly.

She hesitated, frightened. “He said no. You’re supposed to feel everything.”

So I lay there shaking, realizing the truth.

He didn’t punish me because he believed I betrayed him. He did it to please Nerissa—because she was upset, because she ignored his messages.

Our child had died as an apology.

He was the mafia boss everyone feared. But I was the only one he destroyed slowly, deliberately, without hesitation.

**

On the second day, his men came for me. No visit, no words—just a driver in black who took me back to the Carrington estate.

It no longer felt like home. Only a prison dressed in marble.

A message arrived before I even stepped out of the car.

“During this cooling-off period, you stay in the villa. Don’t fucking leave,” Rafael wrote.

I didn’t respond.

Another message came immediately.

“Amara, don’t test me. If you speak to another man, I’ll handle it myself.”

“Don’t even think about leaving.”

I replied with a single dot.

I dragged myself upstairs on crutches, each step slicing through my leg like glass. I used to dance on world stages. Now I could barely climb stairs.

At the top, Mrs. Coleslaw blocked me. “This room is Mr. Carrington and Miss Nerissa’s now,” she said flatly. “You’ll stay in the storage room.”

She pointed. I looked, then simply nodded.

I had chosen everything in this house once—the curtains, the roses, the tiles. Now his mistress slept in my bed while I was pushed into a room that smelled of dust and bleach.

“Alright. I understand,” I said softly.

**

That night, sleep never came. My leg throbbed endlessly until my phone buzzed.

A photo from Nerissa.

She was in my bed, curled against Rafael, flashing a victory sign while wearing the necklace he once placed on me. My lip split as I bit down hard. She knew exactly where to strike.

Morning brought shouting downstairs. I forced myself out, gripping the railing.

Nerissa stood in the living room in my silk nightgown, acting like she owned everything.

“This vase is ugly. Get rid of it,” she said, tossing away something from our honeymoon like it meant nothing.

“That belongs to Ms. Stewart,” Mrs. Coleslaw said quietly.

“It belongs to Rafael. So it’s mine. Understand?” Nerissa snapped.

She turned, spotting me, and raised her voice. “Right, Rafael?”

He sat on the sofa like a king bored of his throne, eyes cold and detached.

“Do whatever she wants,” he said lazily.

His gaze flicked to me for a moment—something almost there, then gone.

“Come eat,” he added, like I was nothing more than something to be fed.

I descended slowly. Nerissa suddenly rushed toward me, pretending concern, then slammed into my injured leg. White-hot pain exploded through me.

“Oh, I didn’t see you,” she whispered sweetly, leaning in. “You broken little thing… stay here, or I’ll bury you.”

Rafael saw it all. His only reaction was a tired frown.

“Be careful,” he muttered.

At breakfast, she sat in my place, feeding him fruit like she belonged there. I ate without taste.

“Ms. Stewart,” she said loudly, “I heard you were a ballerina. What a shame—you’ll only dance with crutches now.”

I set my chopsticks down and looked at her.

“Ms. Peters,” I said quietly, “do you know why Rafael never brings you to real dinners?”

Her smile tightened.

“Because he’s embarrassed of you,” I continued. “Just like now.”

Before the last word settled, Rafael stood and struck my face.

The sound echoed.

“Enough,” he said, voice low and dangerous.
