Chapter 2
It was amusing he cared for Jasmin's Grandma so much that he forgot his birthday.
From the start of our relationship, he claimed he didn't care about rituals.
But because his parents left him when he was very young, he never experienced a birthday celebration.
He particularly envied others who could have such a surprise day every year.
From then on, I began planning surprises for him each year.
It had been ten years, without interruption.
"Sad lady, is there anything else I can do for you?" the system's mocking voice echoed in my mind again.
"I have to die, don't I?" I asked.
This voice has haunted me since I lost consciousness in a car accident three years ago.
He told me that my soul was filled with love for my husband.
Yet I was destined for unrequited love with Gabriel, a heartless man.
To make me willingly give my soul, the system made a bet with me.
If I could win Gabriel's devotion, I would live forever.
But if he ever cheated on me, this love would no longer be pure, and I would vanish from this world.
Feeling desolate, I scrolled through social media and saw a post from Jasmin just ten minutes ago.
[Gabriel, thank you for preparing the elaborate birthday party for my grandmother! You're the best.]
In the accompanying photo, Gabriel and Jasmin beamed alongside her family.
No wonder his friends left so abruptly.
I stared at the picture, biting my straw absentmindedly.
The system said, "Bingo! Right answer."
"For all the fun you've given me over the years, I can grant you one wish."
I sneered, "Wish? Let me die in front of him."
"That's right! I like it."
The system chuckled and faded from my mind.
I glanced at the comments on Jasmin's social media.
"When will you get married?"
"What? Gabriel, the famous doctor, and Jasmin, the fairy, are together?"
"Ah, they're so sweet! I like it."
The message prompt sounded, Jasmin made the latest reply under the comment, [More surprises in three days, please stay tuned.]
As soon as this comment came out, netizens' comments instantly flooded the screen.
Such perfect timing.
In that case, I decided to give them a big gift.
I could imagine the expressions on their faces must have been very interesting at that time.
Chapter 3
That night, I drank a lot of wine.
Over the years, I'd taken great care of my body.
Gabriel, a renowned doctor, emphasized healthy eating in his daily life.
I regarded every word he said to me as the truth and followed it strictly, fearing any slip-up.
He warned me that alcohol could damage my nerves.
From that day on, I abstained from drinking.
He also said spicy food was bad for me, as it would leave a strong taste in my mouth.
I loved spicy food since childhood. But I had grown accustomed to the sweet flavors.
The next day, I was late due to a hangover.
Seeing that I reeked of alcohol, Gabriel fanned his hands in disgust as if he smelled something unpleasant.
He blamed me, "I know that you like to act recklessly when I'm not around.
"Don't you know what day it is? How dare you drink so much? If you cause delays, I'll make you regret it!"
I looked at him, dazed, feeling like a familiar stranger.
"Stop staring and get the ID card," he urged impatiently, also apologizing to Jasmin in the distance.
I asked, "Aren't you going to ask why I was drinking?
"Don't you want to know why I called you yesterday?"
Gabriel paused, then quickly replied.
"Hanah, can you skip the theatrics and stop stalling?
"Jasmin's grandmother is dying, and I need to fulfill her wishes. I have to prepare the wedding venue, and it's all very time-consuming. Can't you show some compassion?"
His words triggered a flood of emotions, and I yelled at Gabriel, tears streaming down my face.
"You only care about Jasmin and her grandmother, but I'm dying too."
"At least she has her family. I only have you."
Gabriel stared at me, seemingly recognizing me for the first time.
"Hanah, I didn't expect this from you. Are you threatening me with death to stop me?"
"I know very well of your condition. Stop talking about death and just go die!"
His words hit me like lightning, and I nearly collapsed on the stairs.
Fortunately, I grabbed the railing in time, and I slowly fell from the railing to the ground.
Seeing this, Gabriel lost his patience and snatched my bag, searching.
"Where's your ID card? The marriage certificate?"
"Hanah, just tell me where they are! Can't you see Jasmin is waiting?"
Suddenly, Gabriel fell silent, making strange sounds.
I looked up to see the birthday card I had prepared for him yesterday, forgotten in my bag.
He stared at me in disbelief.
He asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
I replied, "I would have, but did you listen?
"I said it all. Did you believe me?"
I glared at Gabriel and grabbed my bag from him, only to realize I had taken the wrong one in my rush that morning.
I explained, "I took the wrong bag. Wait here. I'll go home to get it."
Gabriel seemed stunned, still processing the shock, his eyes vacant.
As I turned to leave, a tearful voice called out.
"Even if you can't let go of Gabriel, you don't have to resort to such underhanded tactics."
Chapter 4
"Jasmin!"
Gabriel opened his mouth, wanting to say something but stopped.
Jasmin approached condescendingly, seemingly intrigued. "Gabriel said we're just fulfilling my grandmother's dream. Why do you care so much?"
I stared incredulously at the necklace around Jasmin's neck.
I wiped my eyes repeatedly to confirm what I saw.
Turning to Gabriel, I said, "I didn't expect you to start that early."
Jasmin shot back, "What started long ago? Don't spread rumors!
"I, Jasmin, am not the kind of person who would settle for being a mistress."
I ignored Jasmin and stared at Gabriel.
The necklace Jasmin wore was identical to the 10th wedding anniversary gift he had given me days ago.
He claimed it was a limited model from Swatch, but I remembered that the limited edition came with earrings, while the regular model only had the necklace.
The earrings on Jasmin's ears that kept shaking with her body were the same set.
Seeing my gaze, Jasmin quickly covered the earrings and necklace.
"I don't have good taste. I let Jasmin help me pick it out." Gabriel stood still, mumbling.
I interrupted him, "Alright, don't explain. Your attempts to cover your tracks are nauseating."
I lost interest in them and turned to hail a cab, heading home.
As I sat in the car, watching familiar scenes fade away, it felt like our life was rewinding.
I had been with Gabriel for so long that I almost forgot he was the one who pursued me first.
Back in school, I fainted from heatstroke during gym class.
He was young but unafraid, dispersing the crowd and using a silver needle to relieve my symptoms.
Despite being criticized by the teacher, he proudly declared, "I'm the 18th generation of Lopez's medical skill. My skills are beyond reproach."
Since then, my relationship with him had gradually become closer.
He often waited downstairs in my dorm, claiming he was visiting patients.
He also made nutritious meals for me, saying, "Look, you can get heatstroke just by being out in the sun. You're so weak. You need to take care of yourself."
Now, even when I told him I was dying, he thought I was strong.
How could this happen?
As for his mention of Jasmin's grandmother, I recalled a critical notice issued by the doctor a year ago.
On Jasmin's social media, her grandma looked healthy, not at death's door.
The limited edition necklace he gave me was something I had proudly shown off to my friends.
Now, I realized I had been a fool, played for a clown.
Learning the truth felt like being doused in cold water.
The groggy mind after the hangover also became clear at this moment.
I quickly grabbed my bag and rushed to the city hall.
When I arrived, Gabriel approached, seemingly about to speak, but was interrupted by Jasmin.
"Hanah, I'm sorry to trouble you. It's hard for you to make another trip."
"Gabriel just picked up the number. It should be our turn soon. Let's go in quickly," she said, pulling Gabriel's hand and walking inside.
Gabriel turned to me. "When you said you were going to die, you were lying, right?"
"Well, yes, that was just what I said in anger." I replied with a smile, betraying no emotion.
Gabriel turned away, looking relieved, and stepped inside.
"Gabriel, see? I told you Hanah looks great. How could that be true?" Jasmin chimed in.
"But my grandmother is dying. You know how fragile the elderly can be."
"If I wasn't pushed to the limit, I wouldn't have come up with this plan to avoid affecting your relationship with Hanah," Jasmin said, leaning against Gabriel, her large eyes reddening as if tears were about to fall.
Gabriel hugged her distressedly, "It's okay, don't worry. I'm here..."
Watching their performance, I couldn't take it anymore.
I stepped between them. "Can you two hurry up? Who was it that just yelled about needing a divorce?"
