Chapter 3

Finally, we were getting to the point.

I sighed and carefully sized Ryan up.

His hair was slightly grey, and his eyes were filled with unconcealed tiredness.

Most importantly, he could not remember who I was.

So, I did not want to speak again.

Ryan asked me a few more questions, ranging from initial pointed inquiries to daily routines, but I refused to answer any of them.

Eventually, he grew disappointed and left again.

I was temporarily placed in a single cell, and I ate and slept well there. But I knew that I would be interrogated again very quickly.

After all, the transfer of all properties of the Schmidt Corporation was not a small matter.

In the villa where the incident happened, other than the neighbors who came to watch the fun, there were also crowds of journalists who came to see me, the new CEO of the Schmidt family.

The whole Schmidt family was murdered by their eldest daughter, and the eldest daughter even used to be a psychiatric patient. That must be breaking news.

As I expected, Ryan took me to the interrogation room again the next day.

He looked more tired, but his voice sounded a little excited.

“Mia, when you were at the mental hospital, you used to be bullied, right?”

My body turned stiff, and I nearly stopped breathing.

It seemed like he had found out some details about my life that I was afraid of him discovering. He also secretly investigated the mental hospital where I had been staying.

However, those bullies were not important. Ryan was still far from the truth.

When Ryan saw that I still refused to speak, he softened his tone.

“I’m very sorry. I didn’t know you went through that.

“But Mia, your parents sent you to the mental hospital because you had severe bipolar disorder. It’s not like they wanted to do that.

“You killed your family. You killed the people who loved you, and that’s meaningless. It only paints you as evil.

“Tell me what you’re actually thinking.

“What was all this for?”

I shook my head.

When Ryan saw that I still refused to speak, he pressed his fingers to his temples and sighed.

“You should know that if you say nothing, you’ll only end up receiving the death penalty.

“But if you had a reason…” He trailed off in a sigh.

But there was something I knew for sure.

I killed my family, the people who loved me. Any reason I gave would not be able to save me.

In our silence, someone knocked on the door.

Ryan got up and went out. Before he closed the door, I caught the sound of furious scolding.

When I heard the fleeting voice, my lips turned up at the corners.

The moment I had been waiting for was finally here.

A while later, Ryan came back to the interrogation room.

This time, before he said anything, I grinned and asked my question.

“Has the negative fallout of my incident caused public unrest? Is your superior here to hold you accountable?”

When Ryan heard my words, his eyes widened in shock.

“Mia, what do you want?

“Or should I ask, what do you want to tell me?”

I casually snapped my fingers.

“Guess.”

When Ryan saw that I was still hesitant to speak, he finally could not hold himself back. He threw the files in his hands on the desk.

“Mia Schmidt, it’s true that your parents sent you to the mental hospital, but they did it because you’re mentally ill!

“They donated to the mental hospital every year for you. Not only that, but they also established a foundation in your name and helped countless children!

“After you were discharged, they were no longer interested in work. They stayed at home with you every day just to make up for the regrets you had while growing up. They even gave you all of their wealth. Wasn’t that enough?

“They loved you so much. Why did you do this to them?”

I calmly stared at Ryan, who had flipped out. After he finished shouting, I finally gave him the first hint.

“You’re wrong.

“You’ve been wrong since the beginning.”

Ryan immediately reeled in his anger. He refused to miss any clues.

He stared into my eyes, and he sounded nervous.

“What do you mean by that?

“Which part am I wrong about? Is it about them sending you to the mental hospital?

“I carefully read through all your information, and I’m not wrong. You were definitely diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder.”

Was that so?

I raised my head and met his gaze.

“Not that. You made a wrong guess.

“I’m talking about the first of December, eighteen years ago.

“Do you still remember what happened on that day, Ryan?”

Ryan was stunned by my question. He looked down slightly as if trying to recall something.

A long while later, he finally shook his head. He seemed dazed.

“Did anything important happen that day? You can tell me in detail.”

He still wanted to question me, but I hunched over with my arms wrapped around my belly.

Ryan, who had been staring into my eyes, immediately looked down to examine me.

When he saw the blood dripping down the chair, he suddenly became rigid.

“Mia, what’s wrong with you? Why are you bleeding so much?

“Are you pregnant? You were only recently discharged. How could you have gotten pregnant?

“Where’s the baby’s father? Did someone force themselves on you? Mia, say something!”
