Chapter 2

As soon as I said those words, the doctors who were still congratulating me fell into stunned silence.

They knew how much I had suffered to get pregnant, so they never expected to hear those words from me.

“Madam Jenkin, this pregnancy might be your only chance to have a baby. It’s been extremely difficult for you to get pregnant. You must think this through carefully!”

The doctor patted my shoulder heavily, which shattered my resolute thoughts to abort the baby.

Over the past six years, I had been put through thirty-eight rounds of in vitro fertilization. After I endured pain beyond most normal people suffered, I finally had this baby whom I longed for. Did I really have to give it up after all that?

That moment of weakness stole my courage to ask for an abortion again.

I comforted myself with the thought that perhaps the baby’s whisper I heard was just a stress-induced auditory hallucination, or as long as I ignored the baby’s whisper, it would not lead to the subsequent series of events.

Since I could not make up my mind, I was only left with a gnawing discomfort.

When I recalled what would happen on that night, I immediately called my parents to confirm their safety.

When they learned that I was carrying a baby girl, they did not show a trace of hatred. Instead, they showed big smiles and kept urging me to take good care of my health.

But losing them in the past had traumatized me. I was still worried, so I immediately drove to my parents’ house after I left the hospital.

As long as I did not follow the baby’s whispers, I would not repeat the mistakes in the past.

When I saw my parents, I immediately checked for the gas leaks. I shut off every potential ignition source. I only relaxed after I cleared even the lighters and fireworks off the house.

The baby kept urging me to flee. The baby worried that I would be secretly drugged with abortion drugs if I stayed overnight at my parents’ house.

But I played dumb. I pretended as if I never heard any whispers. I insisted on leaving only after staying the night there.

Just as I stayed overnight and was able to relax, the same fire still happened like in the past.

Early that morning, my parents set up a charcoal grill and insisted on making my favorite pancakes for breakfast. But they accidentally knocked over the grill. The hot red charcoals were scattered around, and it instantly ignited an uncontrollable blaze.

I desperately tried to rescue my parents, whose mobility was restricted, but in the end, I could only powerlessly watch them die in the flames.

I could not understand why despite all my efforts to prevent the past events from happening, my parents had still died painfully and helplessly before my eyes.

If I had not insisted on staying overnight, would my parents have survived?

Tormented by guilt, I blamed everything on myself.

Like in the past, I started feeling depressed and anxious, and I became grumpy and irritable. Meanwhile, Liam still took care of me considerably and attentively.

I knew that I could not mentally collapse like in the past, so I pulled myself together as quickly as I could.

I did not burden Liam’s work again. Instead, I asked to join his company to help share the burden.

But the baby still kept whispering in my head.

“Poor Mom! You have to manage the housework and work, but Dad cheats in the company without feeling guilty at all. Mom, you can catch him in the act if you just go upstairs to the meeting room!”

My unborn daughter pretended to sympathize with me while repeatedly egging me on to go upstairs.

But I felt nothing. I just sneered indifferently.

I would not foolishly ruin my own marriage again. Every sentence she spoke was just background noise to me.

I coldly sat in the office, and I never considered going up to catch the affair. I just focused on my work.

A few hours later, people started walking out of the meeting room, and Liam also happily motioned to me that the contract was secured.

When I looked at Liam, whose eyes were full of love for me, my anxious heart also slowly settled.

Unlike the previous cycle, I did not lose my mind and make a mess. I could finally keep my happy marriage.

Over the next month, my baby still kept urging me to uncover the affair, but I ignored them all. I just started to feel relieved that my life had changed when a quarrel between me and Liam happened again.

To avoid fulfilling the baby’s prophecy of infidelity, I had always intentionally delayed going upstairs so that I would not bump into Liam.

Even so, I accidentally delayed handing over an urgent contract, which caused Liam’s nearly finalized hundred-million-dollar deal to be canceled.

Again, I caused a massive loss to the company, and I became the black sheep in the company.

The employees called me an idiot who forced them to resign and seek new jobs.

Liam also blamed me for being more of a burden than a help. My lack of dedication at work had caused this disaster.

“Every time I ask you to come to the meeting room and work, you always make excuses and not show up. You are not even being sincere about me, or this company! Are you happy now? I’m done with you! Let’s get a divorce.”

I was shattered, and my inner defence crumbled completely.

I had tried my best to avoid the past from happening again, but in the end, I still caused the company a massive amount of loss. I still disappointed Liam. I still ended up being divorced.

My previous efforts all felt like a joke. Everything seemed to be scripted, far beyond my control.

When Liam handed me the divorce papers, my heart ached so fiercely that I trembled.

I had to seize the final opportunity to change my destiny.

Chapter 3

“I don’t agree to this divorce! Liam, I can face whatever difficulties that the company faces with you. A divorce can’t solve the problems.

“We have love and a baby who is on the way. Can you give me one more chance to make it up?”

The baby in my belly was still shouting.

“Mom, don’t say things like this. Dad looks down on women who devalue themselves. Quickly leave him with nothing. He will definitely regret it, and he will cry and beg you to come back!”

I gritted my teeth tightly and firmly ignored my daughter’s whisper.

Indeed, after I asked Liam to stay, he did not leave heartlessly like in the past.

I knew that Liam never betrayed me. He had requested a divorce out of anger.

I started working even harder, and I put myself into the company and Liam.

I knew that I caused massive losses to the company, so I tried my best to make up for it.

I kept promoting the company and proactively got Liam on television. I tried to increase the popularity of the company.

Indeed, through my hard efforts, the company’s revenue shot straight up.

But even if I desperately wanted to stop everything from happening again, the gears of fate kept on turning.

During an interview, Liam’s interaction with a female guest was made ambiguous because of the malicious editing by the studio. This caused Liam to experience cyberbullying, and the company’s stock price dropped drastically. We determined that the only way to salvage the crisis was if Liam and I pretended to divorce.

Just like in the past, I was forced to sign the divorce papers once again.

To silence the media, I moved out of our house overnight and cut off contact with Liam.

But on the day we agreed to remarry, Liam did not show up.

I was very nervous, and I heard the baby’s whisper again.

“Dad is marrying another woman. Mom, if you have any dignity, you should just go far away with me. I don’t want a father like him. If you lower your dignity and go back to him, I won’t acknowledge you as my mother!”

When I heard the news of Liam getting remarried, my mind went blank.

My principles told me I needed to pull out of this relationship. But I subconsciously fought against the baby’s whispers. Almost without hesitation, I hailed a cab and headed straight to Liam’s wedding venue.

Two months ago, I was still happily married and with a family.

But since I got pregnant, my parents left me one after another, and the man who used to say he would love me forever was going to marry another woman.

I knew that I would probably not escape death like in the past, but I still wanted to make one last stand.

After I came to the wedding, Liam looked at me with hatred.

“I despise clingy women the most. You have no dignity, and you really disgust me. I’ve found the woman I love now. How long are you going to pester me?”

Every word from Liam felt like a dagger to my heart. My mouth opened slightly, but I could only shake my head weakly.

I wanted to ask why. Why did my life feel like a pre-written script? Why did all my efforts seem like a joke?

I did not want to die yet. I refused to follow the path that was predetermined by fate.

Just when the moment of my death came in the past, the woman who married my husband suddenly turned back and cast a meaningful gaze at me.

In that instant, I was so shocked that my scalp tingled.

I finally knew why I could hear the baby’s whisper!

I finally found a way to change my life path and to survive!
