Chapter 3

“Anyway, we haven’t got the marriage certificate yet and I didn’t take the oath at the wedding. It was a joke from beginning to end.”

He was obviously stunned for a moment and suddenly hugged me hard.

“Sacha, be good. Don’t make trouble. I know you care about the marriage certificate. We will go to get it in a few days, okay? Kate will not live here forever. She will move out when she finds a home. It will be at most two years. Believe me.”

He continued, “She is beautiful and has a good personality. There are many suitors. She won’t worry. I can’t find a new partner. But I have to help her check it out. She is too innocent and has a child. She is easily deceived…”

I interrupted him coldly, “Don’t look for it. You care about her so much and you are the biological father of the child. You are the best choice.”

He froze, let go of me suddenly and pulled a sarcastic smile from the corner of his mouth.

“Do you think I must have you? It was you who insisted on marrying me back then!”

I lowered my head and whispered, “Well, I deserve it.”

My marriage with him was arranged by Grandpa Marlon because my father saved his life on the operating table 20 years ago.

Although my father agreed as a joke, he never took it seriously.

He always said, “My baby daughter, of course you have to marry someone you like.”

But I fell in love with Curtis.

Three years ago, he went to the Zaford to study for a degree and got a marriage certificate with the gentle and stubborn poor little woman, Kate, in Hausas.

After learning the news, I immediately proposed to cancel the engagement.

But he knelt in front of me, begging with red eyes. “Sacha, I only love you. I have divorced her, please forgive me this time?”

At that time, I forgave him because I was soft-hearted. I deserved it!

“Curtis, it’s normal for Sacha to be young and ignorant. You should be more tolerant. Unlike me... I’ve long been used to wronging myself.”

Kate stood at the door dragging a suitcase, forced a smile and waved to us.

“I’m leaving first. Don’t send me off.”

“Get out of here!”

Curtis suddenly shouted, pushed me away and chased Kate.

My feet were empty and I fell heavily down the stairs.

The severe pain instantly swept through my body, my eyes went black and my limbs and head were in sharp pain.

But Curtis stepped directly over me without even a glance.

He hugged Kate from behind in panic, his voice trembling.

“Kate! You have no relatives in the country and where can you go with a baby? Are you trying to make me anxious to death?”

Kate wiped her tears stubbornly and forced a smile.

“I can take care of myself. If I can’t... there are so many men out there. There will always be someone willing to take care of us mother and son…”

“I won’t allow it!” Curtis interrupted her angrily, dragged her hand and walked back.

When passing by me, Kate pretended to care.

“Do you want to call a doctor for Sacha? She seems to be seriously injured.”

Curtis glanced coldly at me curled up on the ground and said indifferently, “No need. She is a doctor and can save herself.”

In the end, the housekeeper couldn’t bear it anymore and called the emergency number for me.

When I woke up, it was already the next day.

There was no one by the bed and there was a message from Curtis on the phone.

[I’m sorry, I thought you were pretending... I’ll accompany Kate for a prenatal checkup today and come to see you tomorrow.]

I called the housekeeper and asked him to help me send the necessary documents back to the Thompson Family.

I would never set foot in that place again.

The nurse came in with a CT scan, hesitant to speak.

“Doctor Thompson, a mild concussion requires hospitalization for observation. I heard that you got married yesterday, how could this happen?”

Chapter 4

“I was hit by a mad dog.”

I smiled lightly.

Wasn’t it?

The way Curtis protected Kate was like a vicious dog protecting its food.

Suppressing the pain in my heart, I informed my parents that I was safe.

I was browsing the Instagram’s post, Kate had just updated the nine-square grid.

Eight sweet photos of Curtis and her at the wedding, with a bunch of red roses covered with morning dew in the center.

The caption: [Love someone, not just talk, but see what he does.]

I gave a thumbs up from the bottom of my heart.

This sentence was really a wake-up call, reminding me how much Curtis loved her.

She loved red roses the most. In the past two years, Curtis sent her a bouquet every week, rain or shine.

They had video calls every day and Curtis thought it was normal, just ordinary friends chatting.

Every New Year’s Eve, he would fly to the Zaford to accompany her because she would be lonely.

Chocolate for the Valentine’s Day, etc,... all holiday gifts were never absent.

In the face of my doubts, he always had a preaching tone.

“Sacha, there are still responsibilities after the marriage ends. We will be tied together for a lifetime. This has nothing to do with love.”

But if there was no love, which man would be willing to take such responsibility?

A few minutes later, Kate sent a recording.

After clicking it, her crying voice came.

“Curtis, can we not divorce? You obviously still love me, why did you agree to the marriage?”

Curtis sighed softly.

“Grandpa gave an ultimatum. He owes the Thompson Family a life and he must let me marry Sacha to repay this favor. He hates debts the most. Even if it’s not me, it will be other children of the Allen family. But in that case, I will be expelled from the family tree forever.”

Kate asked timidly, “Then... do you like Sacha?”

After a long silence, Curtis’s voice was terribly calm. “I don’t like her.”

My heart suddenly hurt.

Actually, I did doubt that he had no feelings for me.

But every time I asked him, he looked at me with strange eyes.

“Sacha, how I treat you, can’t you feel it? Do you have to tell me? Okay, listen carefully! You are the love of my life.”

Now that I thought about it, the word “love” was probably just a neutral word without any emotional color in his mouth.

My phone suddenly vibrated and as soon as I answered it, Wally’s voice, which was both excited and uneasy, came.

“Sacha, the wedding is already being prepared. We agreed to get married in a week, so don’t go back on your word!”

Before I could answer, he added viciously, “If you dare to go back on your word, I will live in your hospital for a long time and hire you as a private doctor, so that you will be too busy to do anything. Don’t even think about marrying anyone else in this life!”

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

“Master Hudson, you have been saying harsh words since you were a child, but when have you ever really done it?”

“Miss Thompson, you have been a bad mouth since you were a child. Wait until you get married and see how I will deal with you!”

“Just try it!”

“Just try it!”

“Hmph!”

“Hmph!”

We hung up the phone at the same time, but I laughed out loud the next second.

The Thompson and Hudson families were old friends and Wally was my childhood sweetheart.

Every time we met, we either bickered or quarreled. When I was 18, he suddenly confessed his love to me and I thought it was a prank and rejected it directly.

Who knew he was serious and he had been chasing me ever since then.

Until the day when Curtis and I got engaged, he said with red eyes, “Sacha, you will never get a man as good as me.”

As a result, yesterday, this hypocritical young master still ran to snatch the bride secretly.

Thinking of this, the corners of my mouth rose unconsciously.

Chapter 5

Perhaps, marrying this man who knew me well and could make me laugh would be a good choice?

The door of the ward was violently kicked open.

Curtis rushed in with bloodshot eyes, grabbed my wrist and dragged me out.

“Sacha! How dare you complain to Grandpa?! He is now forcibly sending Kate abroad!”

“I didn’t complain.”

I was dizzy because of him and repeated mechanically.

“Still quibbling!” He roared, his breathing so rapid that he almost trembled. “How did Kate let you down? Just because she is my ex-wife? But this is a fact that can never be changed!”

I stared at this strange man in a daze, my voice hoarse.

“Curtis, she was standing at the wedding scene in her wedding dress yesterday, so many guests were watching… Grandpa Marlon is just in the church, not isolated from the world.”

Curtis suddenly froze as if waking up from a dream and held my wrist tightly with both hands.

“Sacha, I was too confused just now. I’m sorry.”

His voice trembled and hot tears fell on the back of my hand. “Go and beg Grandpa. Now, only you can persuade him to let Kate stay.”

Seeing that I didn’t say anything, he actually bent his knees and half-knelt.

“We will go to get the certificate tomorrow! I agree to whatever you want!”

I looked at his shaking shoulders and suddenly laughed out loud. “Okay, I only have one condition.”

“Say it!” He looked up eagerly.

“Cancel the engagement and never see each other again.”

“Impossible! I can’t lose you.” He stood up suddenly, his voice hoarse like a trapped beast. “But I can’t ignore Kate either…”

I interrupted him:

“Don’t worry, I will tell Grandpa that I dumped you. You are not responsible at all, okay?”

I forced myself to walk out despite the dizziness and Curtis hurriedly caught up with me to support me.

“Sacha, things are not what you think... Forget it, we will go to get the certificate tomorrow, so you can rest assured, right?”

He drove all the way to the VIP lounge of the airport.

Seeing us, Grandpa Marlon waved kindly.

“Sacha, this time it is the Allen family who is sorry for you.”

Then he glanced coldly at Kate, who was slumped on the ground.

“The Allen Family will never recognize such a woman and child!”

I took a deep breath. “Grandpa Marlon, I want to help them.”

As soon as the voice fell, Kate suddenly grabbed the bottle of foreign wine on the table and smashed it hard on her head.

Blood instantly flowed down her pale cheeks.

She pushed the panicked Curtis away, forced herself to kneel on the ground and smiled sarcastically at me.

“Sacha, I won’t be a bother to you if I die. Curtis and I are innocent. I don’t accept this unwarranted slander!”

Before she finished her words, she fell heavily to the ground.

Grandpa Marlon was half a priest and couldn’t stand such a scene.

He snorted coldly and left.

Curtis’s heart-wrenching cry was the only one left in the VIP room.

“Sacha, save her! You are a doctor. You must have a way!”

I forced myself to stand on the sofa; my heart was cold.

After so many years, he didn’t even know that I was an internist and couldn’t handle such trauma at all.

After calling the emergency number, I turned around and left.

Curtis suddenly grabbed a bottle and threw it at me, his eyes were terribly sinister.

“Sacha, how can you be so cold! If Kate has any mishap, I will never forgive you in this life!”

The bottle hit me hard on the back of my head and I felt a sharp pain and the warm liquid flowed down my neck.

I felt dizzy and fell to the ground softly.

In the dim light, I saw a familiar figure rushing in and knocking Curtis to the ground with one punch.

“You are a rubbish second-marriage man. You are so lucky to marry Sacha, but you don’t know how to cherish her! I will teach you a lesson today!”
