Chapter 1

I married someone two years ago. From then on, I lived a happy life.

Thankfully, I did not have to deal with a mother-in-law and did not have to work. I even got two hundred thousand dollars from my husband every month as pocket money.

Even my best friends lived the high life because of me.

But today, right after I got my allowance, I got a call from the police station. They told me to pick my husband up from there.

My marriage to Shaun Lowell began because of a community gathering. At that time, I had just turned twenty-seven, and all I heard from my mother was her constant nagging to get married.

The pressure made me react in anger, and I made my way to flirt with Shaun, who looked like the most eligible bachelor in the entire gathering. But he was even more straightforward than I was. When he saw me, he said, “Do you want to get married? I’ll give you at least two hundred thousand dollars a month as allowance.”

At an offer like that, rejecting him would have been outright rude.

Right after we introduced ourselves, we got married in the afternoon. During the two years of our marriage, we only saw each other once.

In the beginning, I was worried that this was an elaborate scam, but he did not disrupt my life in any way in the past two years, aside from making me rich.

“Ms. Snow, if there isn’t any problem with the form, please sign it and pick up your husband.”

I wanted to tell him that there was a problem after all, but when I saw the glaring evidence on the police officer’s computer of me being Shaun’s legal wife, I chickened out.

After I signed the form, I went to pick Shaun up. He was waiting for me on a bench in the hall. His lips were pursed, and he seemed quite nervous.

Once I composed myself, I told him to come with me, but he hushed me and put a finger to his lips with a serious face. A flicker of excitement shone in his face.

“Shhh… a wife caught her husband cheating on her with her own cousin. They’re arguing right now.”

That was prime soap opera material.

Was Shaun not a company president? No president would be so obsessed with gossip. Had the amnesia messed with more than just his memories? Maybe it rewired his entire personality?

The police had told me that he had lost his memory.

When we got home, he was still regretful that he had not gotten to hear the end of that cheating scandal.

“You really don’t remember anything?”

I was not ashamed to admit that I was still clinging to hope.

“I know my name.” He wandered about my house. “Is this our house, honey?”

I firmly corrected him. “Don’t call me that.”

“Why not?”

Because it cheapened the purely transactional nature of our relationship.

After some thought, I still decided to tell him the truth. “Mr. Lowell, you’re my boss.”

Shaun’s eyes were filled with confusion.

I felt troubled. I might not be able to describe and explain the nature of our relationship in just a few words.

“I get it.” He stared at me and said confidently, “We’re having an office romance, huh?”

‘Great! Please don’t guess ever again,’ I thought.

I was filled with regret.

Two years ago, if I had just asked him where he worked, I would not have had to Google Shaun’s name to find out.

But Google was useful. I managed to find a photo from an old gossip article about him.

The headline read [Volk Corp Chairman And His Illegitimate Son.]

When I looked at Shaun, my feelings were complicated.

He was embroiled in a rich family drama and had amnesia.

I was beginning to suspect that the bodyguards standing guard outside were waiting to kill us once no one was looking and when it was dark.

Shaun opened my fridge and asked, “Why is it all coke?”

What the heck?! He was looking down on my coke?!

Shaun shut the fridge and sat beside me. “How did we meet, honey?”

“In a gathering.” I could not be bothered to explain anymore.

He nodded. “Was it love at first sight? Not bad! That’s pretty romantic.”

He had a terrible sense of what counted as romantic.

More importantly, with him here, who would send me money next month?

I turned the laptop over to him. “Shaun, is this you?”

He looked at the screen and grinned. “I sure look good in photos.”

“Alright. I’m taking you over to Volk Corp to let you reunite with your dad tomorrow.”

“No way. I don’t even remember them.”

I forced out a professional smile. “But they’re your family! You might remember them once you see them.”

“And you’re my wife.” Shaun gestured at the laptop with his chin. “Also, that article says that I’m an illegitimate son, so they probably hate me.”

He spoke like I was thrilled about him.

But I did like his money, so I could not turn my back on him. “Mr. Lowell, we really don’t know each other that well. We’re only married in name, alright? We had an agreement before we got married. If you don’t go back, you won’t be able to fulfill your side of the agreement.”

Shaun looked up. “What agreement?”

“After we got married, you’d pay me this much every month.”

I raised two fingers, and he said dismissively, “Just two hundred thousand? If you treat me well over the next few days, I’ll give you a bonus once I regain my memories.”

My eyes lit up. “How much?”

Shaun raised two fingers as well. “Two million a month.”

I shut the laptop and smiled brightly. “What do you want? I’ll buy you a drink. Whatever you like!”

“Maybe some sparkling water. But tomorrow. I want to take a shower and sleep now.”

“Sure. What do you want to eat tomorrow?”

“Croissants and coffee.”

Chapter 2

That night, I tossed and turned in bed for more than an hour.

While I knew that Shaun could indeed afford to give me two million dollars, his word alone was not enough. Two million was not a small sum. What if he refused to keep his promise?

Or what if he remembered the past and forgot the present?

I thought that the risk was too great, so I got out of bed and worked overnight to write an official letter of guarantee.

The next day, I woke up early and threw away all the coke in the fridge. Then, I went downstairs to get water and breakfast for Shaun.

When I got home, Shaun was lying on the couch in a night robe. He must have just gotten up. But his eyes were closed, and it seemed like he had fallen asleep again.

I carefully put my stuff down and got a blanket for him.

Generous bosses like him were rare, so I had to treat him well.

Shaun was good-looking and had long, shapely legs. I could even see a V-line under his abs.

He was even better looking than the men who loved showing off their figures online.

I was ogling him shamelessly like a total pervert.

“Are you done staring?”

When did he wake up?

I had been caught! How embarrassing!

I chuckled awkwardly. “Yeah…”

Before my voice trailed away, he shot me a sharp look. I hurriedly said, “You keep yourself in excellent shape. You look much better than even celebrities. I can’t get enough of it.”

Shaun tilted his head in satisfaction. “If you can’t get enough of it, want to touch it?”

‘Why are you tugging on your robe’s belt as you say that?!’ I screamed internally.

His V-line was very tantalizing.

I swallowed hard and looked at him as if to ask, “Are you okay with that?”

He gave me a look as if to say, “Of course! We’re legally married, after all.”

Married…

That brought me back to reality. “You can continue to sleep. Here’s a blanket for you so that you don’t catch a cold.”

That was close. I nearly destroyed our pure transactional relationship because of lust.

Shaun shot me a strange look, but he said nothing. He just went off to eat his breakfast.

But he did not even fix the belt of his robe. He was still flaunting his assets all over the place.

I kept my eyes down, but he tapped on the table. “Tell me a joke.”

Did all employers have such strange hobbies?

“I’ll pay you one hundred thousand per joke.”

All I needed to do was treat my employer’s hobby as my goal and just do it.

“A long, long time ago, a patient went to see a therapist and told him that he felt like a bird. When the therapist asked him when he had started feeling that way, the patient replied, ‘Since I was a chick.’”

That was followed by an awkward silence.

“Hand me the blanket. That joke was so bad that I’m covered with goosebumps now.”

I felt like crying, but I still handed him the blanket. I also got him the letter of guarantee.

“Could you sign this?”

“Well, well… color me impressed.” Shaun sounded amused. By the sound of it, he found this more hilarious than the joke I told him just moments ago.

“Where’s the ink pad?”

I was taken aback. He said, “For a thumbprint. What if I sign now but claim it’s false later?”

That made sense.

I hurried to the study to get the ink pad and praised him. “You’re amazing, Mr. Lowell. You think of everything so meticulously.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere.” Shaun grabbed the wet wipes I handed to him as well and wiped his hands clean. “I’ve put my thumbprint on this, so call me ‘honey’.”

“Honey.” Anyone who still hesitated after this was surely a fool.

Shaun seemed satisfied. “Good. Now, eat quickly. We’re going out in a moment.”

Chapter 3

“Hey, handsome? Can I have your phone number?”

This was already the third beautiful woman to hit on Shaun today.

As a dutiful employee, I immediately turned around and pretended that I did not exist.

Men were simple creatures. If I, a woman, found another woman beautiful, then he obviously might find her pretty as well, so I had to stay out of the way.

Besides, these ladies could also lighten my workload of taking care of Shaun, so I considered them sisters in spirit even if they were not blood-related.

“Aurora Snow.”

“Yes, Mr. Lowell?” I perked up like a loyal lackey and even greeted the lady. “Miss, you’re really pretty! You’re a real match for my boss.”

“Boss?” the woman asked. By the sounds of it, she did not quite believe what I had said.

That would not do. While I did not care about being the obstacle in Shaun’s path to getting a girlfriend, I massively cared about him deducting my pay because of that. It was a complete no-no.

“Yes! This is my boss. He’s rich and single. Would you like to be with him?”

The woman looked at Shaun meaningfully. “I do like your boss, but he said you’re his wife.”

I shot Shaun a stunned look while he stood by the side with a dark face. He looked visibly annoyed.

Oh no! I had misunderstood him. He was not thinking about getting himself a girlfriend. He wanted me to ward off the women who wanted to flirt with him.

“Ever heard of couples’ role-play?” Shaun grabbed my waist and said in a low, charming voice, “My wife even treats me like royalty at home.”

I melted into Shaun’s embrace. “Honey, why are you telling someone else about this? I’m so embarrassed!”

“Alright. Whatever you want, sweetheart. I won’t say anything more.”

Ha! What a hypocrite!

‘If you really mean that, please don’t pinch my waist so hard!’ I thought.

The woman left in disgust. She even rolled her eyes at us before she left. Her face was practically screaming at us for being disgusting scumbags.

Shaun loosened his iron grip around me, but he looked even more upset than the woman.

“You sure were happily introducing me to that woman just now. Why were you in such a hurry to give me away to someone else? Don’t you want your two million?”

“I felt sad too, you know?”

“Is that so?” Shaun shot me a cold glance. “Cry for me, then.”

How could he say that?

I was not an actress. I could not cry at a whim.

I spent a solid minute thinking of the most painful moments in my twenty-nine years of life but could not squeeze out a single tear.

“You know… tears aren’t the only way to express sadness. I feel sad in my heart. Honestly!”

I tried to convey my sincerity through my gaze, but he clearly was not buying it.

“Honey… Your Majesty… Babe…”

Shaun crossed his arms and watched me as I cooed at him, but he showed no signs of letting this slide.

What a petty man! I had an idea. I decided to change the topic. “Why don’t I bring you to Volk Corp and give you a tour of the place?”

“Are you trying to watch your paycheck slip through your fingers?”

“No!” I hurriedly said. “According to Google, revisiting familiar places helps restore memories, and Volk Corp is the perfect place for that. I just want you to recover your memories.”

‘So that you can give me the two million you promised,’ I added in my heart.

Shaun must have thought that my reason made sense and nodded begrudgingly.

“Aurora? What a coincidence!”

It was a familiar voice, and it was too late to flee. I forced out a polite smile and greeted the person who had called out. “It’s really a coin—”

But my polite smile cracked. If I had known that Anna Xavier was with Blake Potterson, I would not have turned around.

“So petty, Aurora! You won’t even greet your old friend from university?”

Blake nudged Anna and looked as if he was eagerly waiting for chaos to unfold.

Anna’s face did not change. She remained as cool as an ice queen.

Among all my boyfriends, Blake had been my longest relationship. Since our junior year in university, we had kept it on and off until two years ago, when we finally broke it off for good.

Anna looked at Shaun. “Your new boyfriend?”

The gaze and her attitude made it clear that she was looking down on me.

I was not one to back down when I was looked down upon, so I looped my arm around Shaun’s. “Of course! Are you still single, Anna? Want me to introduce you to a nice guy?”

Anna’s gaze darkened. By the looks of it, she was still mad.

“You’re still the same as ever.” Blake crossed his arms and looked at Shaun. “Bro, better watch out. Don’t get cheated on.”
