Chapter 1
The day my daughter was critically ill happened to be Easter.
But my husband took the pregnant woman - his first love back to his hometown.
Before my daughter smiled and asked me before she died, "Mom, does dad dislike me and only like the little brother in Aunt Rhea's belly?"
I called Joel Glover, but the phone was snatched by Eva-his mother, "What are you doing? Ivana is now pregnant with a baby. If you know what's good for you, divorce him."
Then, she hung up the phone.
The next year's Easter, I went to the prison to see Joel.
I looked at him and said, "I just went to my daughter's grave and stopped by to see you."
——
I heard that on the day my daughter died, which was also Easter, Ivana's child was born.
Joel had been staying in his hometown to accompany Ivana during her confinement, and he didn't even attend our daughter's funeral. Only my best friend Nina accompanied me.
I was abducted by traffickers when I was young. I managed to escape from their hands and ran to a welfare house later.
The families who came to adopt me saw that I was thin and small, and didn't look like a lucky child, so they didn't want to take me away.
So I grew up with Nina. She was a lawyer and had never been married. And I married Joel.
I saw the Instagram posted by Eva.
In the photo, Ivana was smiling brightly, with a sleeping baby next to her.
The caption says, "Good luck. Welcome my lovely grandson."
Really shameless.
Nina hated it so much that she grits her teeth. She was even more angry than me, saying, "That bitch. He is just an illegitimate child who can't be seen by others."
Since the day I got pregnant, Eva had never shown me a good face. I could often hear her complaining in front of Joel.
"I knew that women with unknown backgrounds like her have a cheap life. It's not auspicious."
After the birth of our daughter, she said again, "I can't even give birth to a son. The Glover family cannot end with you. I am really unlucky."
When she was six years old, Davina was diagnosed with leukemia. Eva scolded again, "This sheep-born child cannot survive. Don't bother treating her. It's a waste of money."
At first, Joel would speak up for me and refute Eva.
Over time, he actually accepted that our mother and daughter had bad luck.
After Davina got sick, I quit my job and devoted myself to taking care of my daughter.
Finally, after waiting for the opportunity for a bone marrow transplant, I thought I saw hope and that my daughter could be saved.
The doctor said there was still a possibility of rejection after the transplant.
Joel had long been tired of this long treatment time and started to persuade me to give up if it didn't work.
Later, when our daughter experienced rejection after the surgery, he felt that she wouldn't live long even more.
Because of these differences, we started to argue loudly, and every time we argued, he wouldn't come home for several days.
One day, I heard my mother-in-law secretly advising him, "While you're young, find another woman who can give birth to a son. It would be great."
I was so angry, but I didn't have a job and had to pay a huge amount of medical expenses for Davina's treatment. I could only endure it.
Later, I found out that he had already had another woman outside.
Chapter 2
After taking care of Davina's funeral, Nina accompanied me to Davina's grave.
"Baby, it's my fault. I couldn't save your life in the end." Thinking about how Davina suffered from illness and passed away at such a young age, I hated that couple even more.
Suddenly, Nina tapped my shoulder and said, "Jenny, look who's here."
In a hurry, I wiped away my tears and saw that it was Joel and Ivana. Joel knelt down and cried when he saw his daughter's tombstone, "Davina, it's my fault. I didn't have a chance to see you for the last time."
I walked over and pulled Joel up, "Now you know to come and see your daughter. Where were you when she was critically ill? Where were you when she was buried?"
I looked at Ivana, who was crying heavily, "You and her went back to your hometown and accompany her in giving birth." Then I walked up to Ivana and looked at Joel again, "What's the matter? Now that the confinement period is over, you suddenly remember your daughter?"
After listening, Ivana still looked at me innocently, "Jenny, you've really misunderstood. On Easter, Joel originally wanted to come home, but my amniotic fluid broke suddenly and I had to give birth, so he couldn't leave." I slapped her across the face and said, "Shut up, you slut. It's not your turn to speak here. Who let you come?"
I still wanted to slap a second one. Joel came over and held me, "Jenny, what are you doing? We have already reached this point of conflict. Is it necessary to continue?"
I sneered, "Joel, even if we don't love each other, Davina is still your daughter. You didn't even see her for the last time. How can you be so heartless?"
Joel sighed and said, "You also know that our daughter won't live long. Why do you waste time and money? Don't you know how much money we have spent on her over the years? We shouldn't have had her."
After hearing this, I felt like there was a lump in my chest, suffocating.
Ivana chimed in, "Jenny, the deceased has passed away, so don't be too sad. Joel and I truly love each other. I beg you, sign the divorce agreement." I saw a hint of a smile in her eyes.
Nina couldn't stand it anymore and started scolding Ivana for being shameless, even wanting to hit her. Joel quickly stopped her.
I looked at the chaos in front of me and felt so tired, so exhausted that I fainted.
Chapter 3
When I woke up again, it was already two days later.
Nina said I was exhausted and fainted directly, sleeping for two days and two nights.
Not long after I woke up, my mother-in-law came. Nina whispered in my ear, "Call me if you need anything, I'll be at the door." Then he left.
I had no strength and energy to argue with this old lady.
"Do you want to divorce by agreement? Okay, your son had an affair during the marriage, so he should leave with nothing. The house, the car, and the savings all belong to me." I knew her intention, so I didn't want to hide anything.
The old lady snorted, "You, a woman who came out of a welfare house without knowing the details, gave birth to a short-lived daughter for our Glover family, and still want our house, car, and money. You really have the nerve."
I looked at her and said, "You may not be aware that with your son's ability, he can't afford a house and a car. I paid for the down payment at the beginning, so it should be split equally."
"Even if you paid for the down payment, these years you haven't been working, and Joel has to support you and that short-lived daughter. I don't know how much suffering he has endured." I knew the kind of person Eva was. It was useless to tell her that her son had an affair. She thought her son's affair was his ability.
"Here's the deal, you give up the house and the car, and give my son 300,000 dollars in cash. It is the money he spent on supporting you all these years, and we'll be even." What a greedy Eva. She wanted me to leave with nothing and even had to give her useless son 300,000 dollars.
I was about to argue back, but she got up and left.
"I won't waste any more words with you. I'm going to attend my adorable grandson's one-month celebration. You think about it yourself." Eva said and left the room.
Nina hurriedly came in, and I suddenly thought of something. I grabbed Nina and said, "Nina, quickly follow my mother-in-law and see which hotel she goes to." Nina nodded quickly.
Although she didn't know exactly what I was going to do, she always stood by my side. She was the only comfort for me, an orphan with no one to rely on.
