Chapter 1 of When My Mother-in-law was in Danger, My Husband Accompanied His Lover

My mother-in-law, Lily, suddenly fainted. She was diagnosed with advanced cancer.

I kept sadness to myself and called Spencer Horne.

I hoped he could accompany Lily through her last days.

He hung up the phone repeatedly. Finally, he turned it off.

Lily persisted on the sickbed for half a month.

In the end, Spencer never showed up. Lily passed away.

Half a month later, he came back from a self-driving trip, with his first love by his side.

"Why do you keep calling me since there's nothing wrong? Aren't you a nuisance?"

I smiled, thinking, "Nothing wrong? Well, it is just a divorce."

1

Half a month later, I saw Spencer again.

I arrived home, holding Lily's ashes.

At this moment, he drove to the door.

There was a woman with him who got out of the car.

I recognized her briefly.

It was Siena Reid. She was Spencer's first love, whom he had been thinking about for many years.

He helped her with her luggage attentively.

Then they walked straight into the house, talking and laughing.

When Spencer saw me, his face suddenly changed, and he looked sullen.

What followed was endless complaints.

"I went out to have fun for half a month. Is it necessary for you to call me non-stop every day? Aren't you a bummer?"

"What big deal can there be that you have to call me all the time? you are so annoying."

His face was full of disdain and impatience.

Siena pulled at the corner of his clothes, speaking in a coquettish and affected manner.

"Spencer, don't blame Julia. She might be just worried about you. After all, you are so outstanding. I guess she's afraid that people around you will have designs on you."

"What a pretentious woman."

Siena's eyes were full of provocation.

It made me feel uncomfortable all over.

At first, Spencer wanted to go on a self-driving trip.

I wanted to accompany him, but he refused, asking me to take care of his mother at home.

His mother's health was indeed poor, so I didn't insist.

Now I just realized that he had gone to accompany Siena.

I couldn't help but feel a burst of mockery and disgust.

Spencer heard Siena say so, showing a disdainful expression towards me.

...

"If you were as excellent as Siena, you wouldn't have to be worried all the time."

I knew what he meant both in his words and between the lines.

After marrying him, I gave up too much for him.

To take care of this family, I gave up the job that I loved.

Every day, I was like a housewife.

I rarely went shopping and dressed myself up.

But I used to have dreams.

I graduated from a prestigious university.

But all that I had done became his reasons for despising me.

He didn't notice the change in my facial expression.

Instead, he pushed me away.

Then he settled Siena on the sofa.

Then he was busy around the house.

He served Siena as attentively as he could.

"Siena will live with us soon. Hurry up and tidy up. Help her make a room."

I didn't know what Spencer had been thinking.

"He brought his first love to live under my nose."

"I wonder which woman can be as generous as me."

I stood still, not moving.

But my behavior seemed to anger him.

He rushed out of the kitchen and stared at me angrily.

"Julia Brown, did you hear that? Do I need to repeat it?"

There were only three rooms in the house.

Besides our room and Lily's room, the remaining one was my studio.

I didn't have many hobbies. I liked painting and so on.

Painting became my only spiritual sustenance.

I realized that Lily never had a chance to see Spencer before she passed away.

But he went on a self-driving tour with his first love.

I felt extremely angry.

Now I had to vacate my studio for Siena to live in.

I replied abruptly, "Do you need me to free up a room for the two of you?"

...

I looked at him expressionlessly. The more I did so, the angrier he became.

Forcefully, he smashed the fruit plate in his hands onto the ground.

The sound was loud, echoing throughout the entire room.

He glared at me fiercely and gritted his teeth.

"Julia? What do you mean? Are you talking nonsense? It's okay if you scold me. Please don't scold Siena."

"You said such terrible things about her. If it spreads, you will ruin her reputation."

"Siena went on a self-driving trip with a married man."

"She didn't even care about her reputation."

"She won't care about what others say."

Seeing Spencer so angry, Siena didn't waste any time.

She started explaining for herself.

"Julia, you may have misunderstood me and Spencer. We are travel companions. We have no connections at all."

I used to wonder why Spencer was so fascinated with her.

But now I got it.

She was good at acting cute and coquettish. Any man would fall for her tricks.

I ignored them and went into the bedroom.

After all, I had more important things to do.

2

I had been married to Spencer for three years.

But to be honest, these three years had not been easy on me.

There was always a Siena between us.

No matter what request Siena made, Spencer was always the first to agree.

...

Rain or shine.

...

If Siena said she wanted to see him, Spencer would insist on going to see her regardless of everything.

We had argued many times because of this.

But he always found a legitimate reason each time.

He said he was just helping her as a friend.

He said I was petty and slandering their pure friendship.

"Such friendship has crossed the line in my eyes."

"After all, no friend would ask the groom to send her to the hospital on his wedding day."

"No friend would eat the other person's leftovers."

Spencer mind drinking the water I had sipped.

But he didn't mind if it were Siena.

All of this made me feel like I was an outsider.

If it weren't for Lily treating me like her daughter and being considerate of me, I would have divorced Spencer long ago.

...

...

Before Lily passed away, she held my hand and told me.

"Julia, get a divorce if you're not happy in this marriage."

Lily knew that Spencer had been indifferent towards me.

I had suffered a lot in this marriage.

She knew that I chose to endure and tolerate Spencer for her sake.

Lily was sorry for me, which was why she repeatedly advised me.

"If you are indeed unhappy, get a divorce. Don't compromise yourself."

Before, I had been bound by Lily.

Now that Lily was gone, I didn't need to be entangled anymore.

I sorted out my emotions and took out a divorce agreement that I had prepared long ago.

There was a burst of noise coming from the next room.

I opened the door abruptly.

The scene in front of me instantly made me furious.

My paintings were casually thrown on the floor of the corridor.

The whole house was filled with Siena's things.

Those paintings were the ones with which I had won awards in school.

I treasured them.

They were the only proof of my past glory.

Anger blinded my mind as I strode into the room.

I forcefully threw Siena's luggage outside.

The two of them were frightened by my momentum.

Things were scattered all over the place.

There was a burst of raging anger in my chest.

After coming to his senses, Spencer glared at me angrily.

"Julia? What's wrong with you? They are just some crappy paintings. Why are you so heartbroken? Did I wrong you so much by asking you to move your paintings out to let Siena live here?"

Meanwhile, Siena pretended to be frightened.

She was crying pitifully.

Spencer was sorry for her.

He hugged Siena in front of me.

The more Spencer comforted Siena, the more she cried recklessly.

I couldn't help but have an urge to applaud the two.

Seeing their skilled movements, I knew it must not be the first time that they had done so.

"You're crazy! These worthless paintings in your eyes are meaningful to me! Why do you decide without my consent and let others move in?"

"I said, I'll make a room for you right away if she wants to stay here."

He didn't know the importance of these paintings to me.

In Spencer's heart, he didn't care about these.

Siena pretended to wipe away the tears from the corner of her eyes.

...

With red eyes, she said in a pitiful tone, "Julia, I will leave if you think that I am disturbing you here."

Then she turned around and pretended to pack up her luggage.

I knew it was another one of her tricks.

But I saw through her immediately. Spencer always fell for her tricks.

Spencer snatched the luggage from her hands.

Then he stared at me fiercely.

"Julia, can you please not be so jealous? Is Siena disturbing you by staying here?"

His words made me burst into laughter.

"I can't stand living under the same roof with a pretentious woman."

I slammed the divorce agreement in front of him.

He, who had been angry, was gloomier.

He grabbed the divorce agreement and questioned me fiercely.

"Julia, what do you mean? Because of some trivial matters, do you want to divorce me? Have I spoiled you too much in daily life? So you always use divorcing me as a chip?"

I did mention divorcing him verbally a few times before because of his previous behavior.

But every time it was in the heat of the moment. I didn't take any action.

But this time, I made up my mind. He made me see his true colors.

...

Seeing him grit his teeth, I responded to him in an indifferent tone.

"It doesn't mean anything. Let's get divorced!"

He threw the agreement aside.

He took out his cell phone from his pocket.

"I'll call my mom right away. My mom has been so good to you. Let's see how you dare to mention divorcing me."

I couldn't help but feel a sense of irony.

Before Lily passed away, we called him countless times.

Now he remembered to call Lily.

The call went through, but it was constantly unanswered.

He started to appear a little impatient.

He stared at me angrily.

"Where is my mom? Why can't I reach her by phone?"

Seeing my indifferent look, he couldn't help but tremble.

I responded to him word by word.

"Mom is dead!"
