Chapter 1
After getting drunk, my husband’s childhood sweetheart drove and ran over my seventy-year-old mother, crushing her into a mangled corpse.
She died on the spot.
However, my CEO husband, Jason, insisted on signing a settlement on her behalf.
“My mother-in-law was committing insurance fraud. She deliberately lay under the tires. She should bear full responsibility.”
Not only did he get his childhood sweetheart, Olivia, cleared of all charges, but he also transferred the 10,000,000-dollar insurance payout from my mother to her as emotional damages.
“Olivia and I grew up together. I cannot just watch her go to prison and ruin her life. Be reasonable and stop making a fuss.”
After leaving the police station, Olivia made a post on social media.
[Jason standing up for me was so amazing. Childhood sweethearts really are forever family!]
Jason liked her post right in front of me.
I remained terrifyingly calm.
“Jason, let us get a divorce.”
He scoffed.
“You’re just saying that to make me comfort you, right? Megan, you are 30 years old. Can you stop being childish?”
I had brought up divorce countless times, and he never believed I would truly leave.
What he did not know was that among the case documents he had just signed, there was a divorce agreement.
He had already signed it himself.
Jason pulled me into his arms.
“Dead is dead. Olivia has always been like this. She’s a bit reckless. Why are you making a big deal out of it? Besides, who told Mom to stand in the middle of the road?”
I pushed him away and stared at him in disbelief.
He sounded so indifferent, as if the person who had been crushed into a mangled corpse was not the same woman who had donated her bone marrow to save him when he was gravely ill.
Olivia suddenly spoke from the side.
“I am really sorry, Megan. It’s my fault for not seeing clearly and hitting her. How about I let Jason stay with you tonight? I can sleep alone.”
She sounded apologetic, yet she provocatively clung to Jason’s arm.
Jason hurriedly interrupted her. His eyes were full of reproach for me.
“You don’t need to inconvenience yourself on purpose. This isn’t your fault.”
I clenched my fists tightly. Anger surged through my chest, almost erupting.
I had done nothing, yet in her eyes, I had become the villain.
I could not bear to watch any longer and turned to leave.
He hesitated for a second, then chased after me.
“Let’s go home together. We agreed that I would stay with you today.”
I took a deep breath.
“Let’s go to the crematorium first.”
I opened the passenger door and immediately saw several opened condoms tossed inside. My heart sank.
Before the car even started, Olivia called.
“Jason! I was just testing you, and you really went to stay with her!
“Fine! If you want to stay with her, then stay with her forever. Don’t come looking for me ever again!”
He immediately panicked, pulled out the keys, and told me to get out. He stuffed 500 dollars into my hand.
“Take a cab to the crematorium. Use this to get a better urn for Mom. I will be there soon…
“When Olivia gets upset, I will be dealing with it for days. I need to calm her down.”
Then, he shoved me out of the car.
I stood in the cold wind, watching him rush after her.
She ignored him in anger.
“Who wants to sit in your lousy car? You even want to drive it to the crematorium. That is bad luck. I refuse to sit in it!”
He comforted her gently, saying, “Don’t be angry. I will have it scrapped right now. We’ll go pick a new one. We’ll pick something you like.”
After that, he called a towing company and told them to send the car for scrapping.
As I watched, I felt a stabbing pain in my heart. The pain made it hard to breathe.
He had forgotten.
We had bought that car with all of my mother’s savings.
Back then, he had knelt before her in tears and sworn that he would let her see us surrounded by children and grandchildren.
I watched as the car was dismantled and dragged away.
He forgot that I even existed. He walked away with her while laughing and chatting.
I took out my phone and sent an emoji to a chat that had been silent for three years.
The reply came instantly.
“Where are you? I’m coming back to the country right now to find you! Wait for me!”
Chapter 2
I carefully packed my mother’s ashes and prepared to go home.
Seeing that I was alone, the cremation worker asked in confusion, “Where is your husband? For something this serious, why is he not here with you?”
I lowered my head and glanced at my phone.
[I am taking Olivia to the seaside. I’ll be back later.]
A bitter smile tugged at my lips.
I had suggested going to the seaside many times before, but he always refused, saying he had migraines.
He would ask me never to bring up going to the seaside. He claimed that hearing about it gave him a headache.
Then, I checked social media. Olivia had posted nine photos of a new car.
[10,000,000 dollars. Instant purchase.]
Not a cent more, not a cent less. It was exactly the amount of my mother’s insurance payout.
I calmly turned off my phone. My heart was completely numb.
That night, Jason did not come home.
Early the next morning, I brought the divorce agreement to his company.
The receptionist saw me, sneered, and said, “Is that not the former VP who tried to scam Miss Olivia? You’ve already been fired, so why are you here causing trouble?
“Be careful. If you upset Miss Olivia again, Mr. Langley might just divorce you.”
I did not bother responding and walked straight into Jason’s office.
I had just placed the agreement into the drawer when Olivia pushed the door open and began mocking me.
She said, “Trying to steal from the company after getting fired? Who allowed you into his office? Get out, or I’ll call the police.”
I was already used to her two-faced behavior. I put the document away and turned to leave.
Seeing that I ignored her, her face darkened. She grabbed a vase and smashed it against my head.
Blood instantly began streaming from the back of my head. My vision spun, but I forced myself to stay upright and shouted, “Are you insane? Do you really want to kill someone right here in the office?”
She sneered, “So what if I do? I am the exception to all rules.”
I gritted my teeth and tried to run, but she tripped me. I fell face-first and broke two of my front teeth.
Seeing that my mouth was covered in blood, she burst out laughing and called the employees over to watch.
Everyone held back laughter, mocking my broken teeth. I covered my mouth.
“Stop looking! Call an ambulance!”
At that moment, Jason pushed through the crowd and ran toward me.
Chapter 3
“Megan! What happened?”
He hurried to wipe the blood from my face.
The employees lowered their heads, not daring to speak.
Olivia pointed at me.
“She tried to steal the surveillance footage of me accidentally running over her mother. I think she wants to send me to prison. I got angry and hurt her, and she even scolded me.”
After speaking, she looked aggrieved.
Jason’s expression instantly filled with concern. He shoved me aside.
“The case is already closed. Why are you still clinging to it? If you couldn’t let it go, you could have talked to me. Instead, you used such despicable methods. I did not expect you to be this kind of person!”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
With Olivia here, my mere presence annoyed him. What right did I have to expect him to stand up for me?
I let out a bitter laugh and said hoarsely, “I do not want anything. I just want a divorce.”
His expression wavered as he was about to speak.
Suddenly, Olivia screamed, “Ah! It hurts! Megan! You are so vicious. You actually smeared poison on me!”
Her body convulsed as foam formed at her mouth.
I froze. “I did not—”
Before I could react, a slap landed hard across my face.
Pain burned across my cheek.
I could not believe it.
Had Jason actually hit me over her baseless accusation?
Even after she killed my mother?
As her convulsions worsened, his gaze toward me grew colder.
“Force-feed her 10 chili peppers. Let her reflect on herself!”
My heart pounded.
He knew I was allergic to chili. Even a little would trigger my asthma.
Several employees grabbed me without hesitation, pried my mouth open, and shoved red chili peppers inside.
I cried out in pain, “Jason…”
However, he had already rushed Olivia into the ambulance without even looking back.
One employee sneered even more boldly, saying, “Miss Olivia is the one he truly cares about. Stop dreaming.”
I did not know how much time had passed. My mouth had gone numb, and I gasped violently for air.
When they saw that I was having an asthma attack, they panicked and left me there.
Messages kept popping up on my phone from Olivia.
[How do the devil peppers I picked for you taste? If you go against me, I will play you to death.]
[I ran over your mother on purpose. Do you think Jason does not know? As long as I am happy, he would even die for me.]
[By the way, I enjoyed spending the 10,000,000 dollars. Maybe, next time, I will use your father instead.]
I lay on the floor in despair. My vision was fading. I did not even have the strength to call the police.
Then, Olivia showed up and started a livestream.
“You didn’t think I would let you off so easily, did you? Otherwise, all this suffering would have been for nothing.”
