Everyone in New York thought Ryan Walker loved me.

They thought he was the kind of husband women prayed for and men pretended not to envy. He opened car doors for me. He remembered my coffee order. He kissed my forehead before every public event like my existence was the most precious thing in his life.

That morning, he stood in our kitchen wearing a charcoal suit and the soft smile that had fooled half the city.

“Evelyn, you forgot to eat again,” he said, sliding a plate of toast and eggs in front of me.

I barely looked up from the stack of legal documents beside my coffee.

“Ryan, I have a board meeting in forty minutes.”

“And you have a body that needs food.” He took the pen from my hand like he had every right to save me from myself. “Your father trusted you with Carter Group, not because he wanted you to collapse before breakfast.”

The mention of my father made my fingers tighten around the coffee cup.

It had been three months since he died.

Three months since the hospital machines went silent.

Three months since half of Manhattan decided my grief was less interesting than the question of whether I could actually run his company.

Ryan sat beside me and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.

“You’re going to be amazing today,” he said gently. “You know that, right?”

I looked at him.

His eyes were warm. Patient. Devoted.

Sometimes I hated how badly I needed that warmth.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “The board still thinks I’m just my father’s daughter.”

“Then make them regret underestimating you.”

I smiled despite myself.

“That almost sounded like you believe in me.”

“I married you, didn’t I?”

He leaned in and kissed me.

Softly.

Carefully.

Like I was something fragile.

At the time, I thought that kiss was love.

Later, I would understand it was performance.

A perfect little scene from a man who had learned exactly how to make a woman feel safe while sharpening the knife behind her back.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Sophia.

Good luck today, babe. Knock them dead. Drinks tonight?

Sophia Moore had been my best friend since college. She had held my hand at my father’s funeral. She had cried into my shoulder and said, “Your dad was like family to me.”

I typed back quickly.

Maybe. Depends if the board kills me first.

Ryan glanced at the screen.

“Sophia checking on you?”

“Yeah.”

“That woman loves you,” he said, smiling. “You’re lucky to have her.”

“I know.”

He stood and picked up his briefcase.

“I’ll drop by the office after my meeting. Call me if anyone gives you trouble.”

“I can handle it.”

“I know you can.” He kissed my forehead again. “But you don’t always have to.”

I watched him leave, and for one stupid second, I felt grateful.

Grateful that in the middle of my father’s death, my company falling apart, and the entire city watching to see if I would fail, I still had a husband who seemed to stand between me and the storm.

I had no idea he was the storm.

The board meeting was exactly as awful as I expected.

Twelve people sat around the long glass table in my father’s conference room, all pretending their concern was professional instead of personal. The older members spoke to me like I was still a child wandering into her father’s office wearing heels too expensive for her experience.

“Evelyn,” Mr. Harrington said, folding his hands, “no one is questioning your inheritance.”

“That’s good,” I replied. “Because it isn’t up for discussion.”

A few eyes shifted.

He smiled tightly.

“What we are questioning is whether you’re prepared to lead Carter Group through this transition.”

I opened the folder in front of me.

“Revenue dropped six percent last quarter because three international contracts were delayed during my father’s illness. I’ve already spoken with the London team and the Singapore partners. Two contracts will be restored by next month. The third needs renegotiation, and I’m meeting their legal counsel Friday.”

Silence.

I looked around the table.

“You were saying?”

Mr. Harrington cleared his throat.

“I’m glad to see you’ve done your homework.”

“My name is on the building. I thought homework was the minimum.”

For the first time that morning, someone smiled.

Not Ryan.

He arrived twenty minutes before the meeting ended, standing quietly by the door like the supportive husband in every society magazine article ever written about us. When the meeting finished, he walked over and placed a hand at the small of my back.

“You were incredible,” he murmured.

Mr. Harrington chuckled.

“She has her father’s bite.”

Ryan looked proud.

“She has more than that.”

The praise should have made me happy.

Instead, something in his tone made me glance up.

For a split second, his eyes weren’t on me.

They were on the documents in my hands.

The shareholder restructuring file.

The inheritance file.

The files he had told me not to worry about because “legal matters only make grief worse.”

I pulled them closer.

His smile returned immediately.

“You okay?”

“Fine,” I said.

But for the first time in years, I noticed how quickly Ryan’s face could change.

That evening, Sophia insisted we celebrate.

“You survived your first real board fight,” she said over the phone. “That requires alcohol.”

“I’m exhausted.”

“That also requires alcohol.”

“Sophia.”

“Evelyn.”

I sighed.

Ryan walked out of our closet, adjusting his cufflinks.

“Go,” he said. “You need a night out.”

“With Sophia?”

“Of course.” He smiled. “She’s your best friend. Besides, I have a late meeting with investors.”

Something about that sentence landed wrong.

“What investors?”

He paused for half a second.

Then he laughed softly.

“Listen to you. CEO voice already.”

“I’m serious.”

“A small private group interested in expanding Walker Holdings. Nothing exciting.”

Walker Holdings was Ryan’s company.

Smaller than Carter Group, but polished enough to make him look successful before he married me.

“Since when are you raising capital?”

“Since I realized being married to a Carter makes everyone assume I’m just living off my wife.” He kissed my cheek. “Don’t worry. I can still afford dinner.”

I rolled my eyes.

But after he left, I stood in the bedroom longer than necessary, staring at the closed door.

Then I made a decision I couldn’t explain.

I changed out of my dress, put on a coat, and went downstairs earlier than planned.

I had meant to meet Sophia at the bar.

Instead, I found myself asking our driver to take me to Ryan’s private office.

Maybe I wanted to surprise him.

Maybe I wanted to apologize for questioning him.

Maybe some part of me had already started screaming, and I was only just beginning to hear it.

Ryan’s assistant was gone when I arrived. The hallway outside his office was dim, the kind of quiet that made every sound sharper.

I was about to knock when I heard laughter.

A woman’s laughter.

Familiar.

Soft.

Too familiar.

My hand froze inches from the door.

“You’re terrible,” Sophia said from inside.

My breath stopped.

Ryan laughed too.

Not his public laugh.

Not the warm, polished sound he used at charity dinners.

This laugh was lower. Careless. Cruel in a way I had never heard from him.

“I’m terrible?” he said. “You’re the one who texted her good luck this morning.”

“She needed it.” Sophia’s voice turned sweet and mocking. “Poor Evelyn. Daddy’s dead, the board hates her, and her perfect husband is the only thing holding her together.”

My stomach twisted.

I stepped back, but my heel touched the wall.

The sound was small.

Inside, they didn’t notice.

Ryan said, “Don’t underestimate her.”

There was a pause.

Then Sophia replied, “Are you defending your wife now?”

“I’m saying she’s not stupid. She’s emotional, sheltered, and desperate to prove herself, but she’s not stupid.”

My fingers curled into my palm.

Sophia laughed again.

“Relax. She trusts you more than she trusts herself.”

“I know.”

Those two words were calm.

Certain.

And they hurt more than the laughter.

Sophia’s voice dropped.

“How long until the divorce?”

“Soon.”

“You said that last month.”

“Because last month her father was barely in the ground. If I moved too fast, people would ask questions.”

“And now?”

“Now we make her look unstable. Reckless. Unfaithful if necessary.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Sophia hummed.

“You still want to use the hotel plan?”

“It’s the cleanest option,” Ryan said. “A few photos, a witness, maybe security footage of a man entering her room. The media will do the rest.”

I covered my mouth.

No.

No, this wasn’t happening.

This wasn’t my husband.

This wasn’t the man who made me breakfast and kissed my forehead and told me I didn’t have to face the world alone.

Sophia asked, “And the inheritance?”

“Once she’s the guilty party in the divorce, she’ll settle. She won’t want the scandal. Carter Group shares, the trust access, the property transfers—she’ll give up more than she realizes just to make the humiliation stop.”

“She might fight.”

Ryan’s voice turned cold.

“Then we make sure she can’t.”

A long silence followed.

When Sophia spoke again, her voice was quieter.

“You mean…”

“I mean accidents happen every day in New York.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

I reached for the wall to steady myself.

Sophia whispered, “Ryan.”

“What?” he said. “Don’t look at me like that. You wanted a life with me. You wanted the penthouse, the money, the name. Evelyn is the only thing standing between us and all of it.”

“She was my friend.”

“And I’m your future.”

Another silence.

Then Sophia said, “Would you really go that far?”

Ryan laughed softly.

“Sweetheart, dead women don’t contest inheritances.”

My entire body went cold.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

All I could see was Ryan that morning, placing breakfast in front of me. Ryan telling me I was amazing. Ryan touching my back in the boardroom while already planning how to destroy me.

A phone rang inside the office.

I stumbled backward.

This time, my heel hit the floor too hard.

The voices stopped.

“Did you hear that?” Sophia asked.

I turned and ran.

I ran down the hallway, into the elevator, through the lobby, and out into the night with my chest burning and my eyes dry because the shock was too deep for tears.

My phone buzzed before I reached the car.

Ryan.

I stared at his name on the screen.

My Love

That was how he had saved himself in my contacts years ago.

My love.

My death sentence.

I answered because some reckless part of me needed to know if he would still sound the same.

“Hey,” Ryan said warmly. “You with Sophia already?”

I looked through the glass doors of the building.

High above me, his office lights were still on.

“No,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. “I’m on my way.”

“You sound strange.”

“I’m just tired.”

There was a pause.

For one terrifying second, I thought he knew.

Then he softened his voice.

“Come home after drinks, okay? I don’t like you being out too late.”

Of course he didn’t.

Dead women were easier to manage at home.

“I will,” I said.

“Good girl.”

I closed my eyes.

The words had once made me feel loved.

Now they made me want to vomit.

Ryan continued, “I love you, Evelyn.”

I looked up at his office window.

For the first time, I understood that monsters did not always arrive with blood on their hands.

Sometimes they made you breakfast.

Sometimes they kissed your forehead.

Sometimes they called you their whole world while calculating the price of your death.

“I love you too,” I whispered.

Then I hung up, got into the car, and told the driver to take me anywhere but home.

Because my husband wanted me ruined.

My best friend wanted me erased.

And by tomorrow morning, I needed to become the one thing neither of them had planned for.
