Chapter 1 of My Husband Left My Mother Freezing Outside While His First Love’s Dogs Came and Went

1: 1

Twenty below, and my mother had no code for the smart lock. She stood outside our door alone, the whole night through.

I was away on a business trip, frantic and furious, and I called my husband.

"You promised you'd program my mom's face into the smart lock."

His voice came through thick with sleep and irritation.

"Oh. Mila Delgado's back. We grew up together. I can't have her locked out."

"The lock holds five faces, doesn't it? One more for my mom doesn't get in anyone's way."

"It's already full. You, me, Mila, and her two dogs. That's exactly five."

I asked for less.

"Then just delete one of the dogs."

His voice shot up, sharp with displeasure.

"Mila and her dogs are a package. The dogs don't come in, she doesn't come in."

I listened to the flat beep of the line going dead.

Seven years of marriage, worth less than two dogs.

Then let it end here.

I booked the next flight out.

My hands and feet stayed cold the whole way, waves of morning sickness rolling up, and I couldn't stop shaking.

I couldn't bear to imagine how my mother had made it through one night alone in that cold, black stairwell.

When I saw her, her face was bloodless, her lips a bruised blue.

"Mom, how are you feeling?"

"Sarah Pruitt, don't be scared, I'm fine. Don't frighten the baby."

Her whole body was burning up, and still she pulled herself together to comfort me.

"Go on home. I've got a bit of a cold, I don't want to give it to you."

The tears came down in fat drops, and a dull ache pressed at my chest.

I still remembered the first time my mother visited after I got married. Clement James had cleaned out the guest room three days early, bought a new mattress, new pillows.

"Mom, once you're here you're in your own home. I'll take good care of you on Sarah's behalf."

And now the man who'd sworn to honor her had shut her out himself, in twenty below.

It took two days for her fever to break, and Clement never called once.

On the third day, I brought my mother home.

Mila was curled up on the couch in my coral fleece pajamas, binging a show.

Clement sat beside her, head bent, peeling an orange for her.

The nursery we'd set up had been turned into a dog den, top to bottom.

Hearing us, Mila looked up and complained.

"Auntie, I don't mean to say it, but you were only asked to go buy groceries. To storm off in a huff like that. Why such a temper?"

Eyes red, I stared hard at Clement.

"My mom stood outside all night. You didn't know?"

"She called and you didn't answer. She rang the bell and you didn't open. What was that supposed to be?"

Mila spoke up, soft and gentle.

"Sarah, don't blame Clement."

"I just got back and I'm jet-lagged. He didn't want my rest disturbed, so he set his phone to silent on purpose."

My mother tugged at my sleeve, trying to smooth it over.

"Sarah, don't be angry. You're pregnant, you can't let yourself get worked up."

"I'm fine, it's nothing."

She'd caught pneumonia from the cold. The doctor said a little later and it could have been life-threatening.

But her stepping back didn't buy understanding. It bought sharper mockery.

"Auntie really is too delicate. It was just one night waiting outside. Was it really worth putting on the whole suffering act and going to the hospital?"

"Clement and I used to get up before dawn in winter to run, in short sleeves, and we were fine."

"Clement, isn't that right?"

Clement, who hadn't made a sound since I walked in, finally answered, taking her side out in the open.

"It's nothing. And you have to blow it up until the whole house is in an uproar."

"I always said we shouldn't live with the old folks. She couldn't get in, so why couldn't she go to a hotel?"

"Suffering for no reason, and now she comes around blaming us."

I lifted my head and stared at Clement.

"Her ID is here in the apartment. How was she supposed to check into a hotel?"

"And it never crossed your mind that my mom being gone these few days might mean something happened to her?"

Mila's eyes reddened.

"It's all my fault. Stop fighting, you two, I'll just leave."

Clement put the neatly peeled orange into her hand.

"She's standing right here, isn't she? What's the fuss about?"

He took Mila by the hand and walked her into the study, slamming the door with a bang.

A moment later, the two of them were laughing and chatting inside.

They grew up together.

Clement knew every one of Mila's likes.

Knew she was afraid of the dark, knew she had to hold something to sleep, knew she hated picking bones out of her fish.

All these years, every holiday, big or small, Clement would fly overseas to be with her.

At first I still complained.

"Can't you be more understanding? Mila and I have spent every holiday together our whole lives. How can I just abandon her because I married you?"

So it turned out that from beginning to end, I was the outsider.

My mother, at a loss, slipped into the messy kitchen.

Head down, she started washing the pots and dishes that had piled up for days.

"Mom, let me do it."

"No, no, you sit and rest. I'll wash them, it's fine."

She bent over the sink, scrubbing every bowl with care.

And all at once I saw it.

My mother had grown old.

Her hair had gone white.

The lines on her face had deepened.

Her hands weren't as nimble as before.

She was sixty-one this year.

An age when she should be at home, taking it easy.

Instead she had traveled all this way, for me, to look after me.

And here she was, made to feel unwanted.

"Mom."

"Mm?"

"I'm sorry."

She froze for a moment, then reached up and wiped the corner of her eye.

"Silly girl. What are you apologizing for?"

"I'm fine, really, I'm fine. As long as you're doing well, I can bear anything."

The tears came all at once.

And suddenly the future felt like a fog I couldn't see through.
