When My Daughter Needed Surgery, My Husband Denied We Were Family Summary

The Greyhound reeked of diesel and old coffee. At Port Authority, I stepped off with Inaya's hand in mine and a duffel bag holding all we owned. The city swallowed us whole. Her fingers tightened around mine. She tilted her face up, eyes too large now, her illness having whittled her down to something fragile and bird-boned. "Mama, is Daddy here?" I forced the word out. "Soon, baby." He had looked at us and said we were not his family. Now his daughter needs surgery, and I have nothing left but a bus ticket and a love fierce enough to make him answer for it.

Chapter 1 of When My Daughter Needed Surgery, My Husband Denied We Were Family

The Greyhound smelled like diesel and stale coffee. I stepped off at Port Authority with Inaya's hand in mine and a duffel bag that held everything we owned. The city hit me all at once — noise, exhaust, strangers moving fast in every direction. I tightened my grip on Inaya's fingers.

She looked up at me with those big eyes. Too big for her face now. The illness had carved her down to something fragile and bird-boned. "Mama, is Daddy here?"

I swallowed. "Soon, baby."

She clutched the photograph in her other hand. The edges were soft from years of handling. Colter's face stared out from the faded paper, younger, smiling, arm around my shoulders at the church picnic the summer before he left. Inaya had carried that picture everywhere since she was old enough to understand the word "father." She didn't remember him. She only knew the man in the photograph.

I pulled the address from my coat pocket. I'd gotten it from the broadcast network's corporate directory after three phone calls and a lie about being his cousin. The receptionist had been kind. She'd read it out twice to make sure I got it right.

I found a subway map on the wall and stared at the colored lines until they made sense. Midtown. Forty-second Street. I could do that.

Inaya leaned against my leg while we waited on the platform. She didn't complain. She never did anymore. Sick kids learn not to waste energy on complaints.

The train was packed. I held her against me and felt her heart beating through her thin jacket. The $5,000 zipped inside my bag pressed against my hip. Every bill in that pouch had a name attached. Dorothy Simmons, my landlord, who'd given me two months' worth of her fixed income. The church collection. The diner owner who'd let me work double shifts and paid me under the table. The neighbors who'd slipped tens and twenties into my hand at the door and told me to bring Inaya home safe.

I was bringing her to the man who'd promised to build us a life. The man I'd given my scholarship for. The man who'd stopped answering my calls five years ago.

We got off at Forty-second Street. I checked the address again and started walking. Inaya's breathing got harder after the first two blocks. I slowed down. The buildings here were glass and steel, nothing like home. People in suits rushed past us like we were invisible.

Then I saw him.

He stepped out of a black town car in front of a tower with the network's logo etched into the glass. He wore a charcoal suit that probably cost more than our rent. His hair was different. Styled. He laughed at something the driver said and handed him a folded bill.

Inaya's hand tightened on mine. "Mama? Is that—"

"Stay here," I whispered.

I stepped forward. "Colter."

He turned. For a second, I saw it — recognition, shock, something that might've been fear. Then his face went blank.

He crossed the sidewalk in three strides and took my elbow. Not gently. He steered me into the alley beside the building, away from the entrance, away from the people in suits.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low and fast. "Myra, what the hell are you doing here?"

"Inaya's sick." I kept my voice steady. "She needs surgery. I wrote you. I called. You didn't—"

"You can't be here." He glanced back toward the street. "Did anyone see you? Did you tell anyone who you are?"

I stared at him. He wasn't asking about Inaya. He wasn't asking how bad it was or how much the surgery cost or why I'd had to come find him. He was asking if anyone saw.

"Colter, she's dying."

"I heard you." He ran a hand through his hair. The styled hair. "Okay. Okay. I'll help. But you cannot tell anyone who you are. Do you understand? You're a distant relative. From upstate. You came to the city for medical care and I'm helping out. That's it."

I felt something crack inside my chest. Small. Clean. Like ice splitting.

"Why?"

He looked at me like I was stupid. "Because I have a life here, Myra. I have a career. I can't—" He stopped. "It's complicated."

"We're your family."

"And I'm helping you. I'll get her into a hospital. I'll use my insurance. But you have to do this my way."

Inaya appeared at the mouth of the alley. She still held the photograph. She looked at Colter, then at me.

Colter's face changed. He crouched down in front of her and smiled. It looked like the smile in the picture. Almost.

"Hey there," he said softly. "You must be Inaya. I'm your Uncle Colter."

Inaya blinked. She looked at the photograph in her hand, then back at him. "Uncle?"

"That's right." He glanced up at me. His eyes were hard. "Your mama and I are cousins. I'm going to help you get better, okay?"

Inaya looked at me. I saw the question in her face. I saw the hope.

I nodded once.

"Okay," Inaya whispered.

Colter stood. He straightened his tie. "I'll make calls. Meet me at Mount Sinai tomorrow morning. Pediatric wing. Nine a.m. Don't be late."

He walked back toward the street without looking at us again.

Inaya slipped her hand back into mine. "Mama? Why did Daddy say he's Uncle Colter?"

I looked down at her. At her pale face and her big eyes and the photograph she still held like a talisman.

"Because that's what we have to call him right now," I said quietly. "So he can help you get better."

She nodded slowly. She didn't understand. But she trusted me.

I picked up the duffel bag and started walking. I didn't know where we were going. I just knew I had to move before the crack in my chest split all the way open.
