Chapter 1 of Husband Chose Her Dance Over My Citizenship Oath

I kept two front-row seats at my citizenship ceremony for my husband and our six-year-old son.

For ten years, I had translated Matt's Spanish-speaking clients, managed Ollie's school and medical forms, and studied civics after everyone slept.

Ollie had drawn me a crooked American flag and promised to wave it during the oath.

Five minutes before the ceremony, his video call lit up my phone.

“Mommy, we're watching Bella dance,” he said over the music.

“Daddy says you just raise your hand and say yes, so yours will be fast.”

The camera swung past Matt fixing the strap on Vanessa's dress.

No one had told me they were skipping my ceremony.

I took the oath alone, smiled alone, and told the photographer, “They couldn't make it.”

In the restroom, I moved my paycheck to an account in my name and emailed the family lawyer whose card had been in my purse for three months.

“Do you want me to prepare separation papers?” she replied.

I looked at the photo of two empty chairs and typed, “Yes.”

"Excuse me, those are taken," I said, blocking a woman from pulling the folding chair to my right.

"The ceremony starts in five minutes," the woman muttered, walking away.

"My husband and son are parking," I called after her, forcing a polite smile.

That was a lie. My phone screen remained dark.

Ten years of visas, paperwork, and anxious waiting had led to this convention center. The night before, I stayed up translating payment instructions for Matt's Spanish-speaking client so he could take the morning off. At dawn, I packed Ollie's blue noise-canceling earmuffs. I had planned every detail because this day mattered.

A microphone screeched at the front of the hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we will begin the naturalization oath shortly," the host announced, his voice booming over the speakers. "Please silence all mobile devices."

Right as I reached to mute my phone, a FaceTime request popped up. Ollie’s grinning face filled the screen.

I hit accept, relief washing over me. "Hey, sweetie. Are you guys at the south entrance? I saved you the aisle seats."

"Mommy!" Ollie shouted.

He wasn't in a parking garage. Blaring pop music and the roar of a massive crowd blasted through the tiny speaker. The background was a blur of neon lights and sequined banners. A state dance competition.

"Ollie, where are you?" I asked, gripping the phone tighter. "Where is your dad?"

"I'm Bella’s support brother today!" Ollie yelled over the cheering. He spun the camera around to show a massive stage where a group of teenagers was performing. "Daddy said we had to come cheer for her."

Bella. Vanessa's daughter.

My chest tightened, a cold knot forming in my stomach. "Ollie, you were supposed to be here. With me. Today is my citizenship ceremony."

Ollie looked off-camera, his smile faltering for a second. "Daddy said you just have to raise your hand and say yes. He said it’ll be over really fast."

"When did you guys decide this?" I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady. "Matt told me last night he was ready for today."

Ollie bit his lip, glancing sideways again. "Daddy told me not to tell you this morning. He said you would make things complicated."

The camera fumbled and flipped. The frame settled on Matt. He stood in the crowded gymnasium aisle, dressed in the dark navy suit I ironed for him yesterday. But he wasn't looking at the camera. He was bending over, carefully adjusting the thin rhinestone shoulder strap of Vanessa’s evening gown.

Vanessa noticed the phone. She leaned in, her glossy lips pulling into a wide, picture-perfect smile.

"Hey, Elena!" Vanessa shouted over the music, waving perfectly manicured fingers. "Sorry we stole your boys. Bella was just so nervous about her solo. Everyone needs a little family support today, right?"

"Matt," I said, my voice dropping low. "Are you really doing this right now?"

He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Elena, it's just a quick oath. You’ll be fine. We’ll celebrate tonight."

"I packed Ollie's earmuffs for this," I said. "I did your client's translation work so you could be here."

"And I appreciate that," Matt said, looking anywhere but at the lens. "But Bella had a panic attack this morning. Vanessa didn't know what to do. You know how Ollie loves watching her dance."

"The ceremony is starting," I said.

I didn't wait for his reply. I tapped the red button and ended the call.

"Please stand and raise your right hand," the judge instructed from the podium.

All around me, hundreds of people rose to their feet. I stood up. To my left, a young woman wiped tears from her cheeks while her mother held her hand. To my right, a man hoisted his toddler onto his shoulders, whispering how proud he was.

I stared straight ahead. I didn't look at the judge. I didn't look at the giant flag hanging from the rafters. I fixed my eyes on the cold, gray metal backs of the two empty folding chairs beside me.

I recited the oath. The words left my mouth, empty and hollow.

When the applause erupted, the aisles flooded with families carrying bouquets of roses and foil balloons. A photographer holding a heavy DSLR camera navigated through the rows, stopping at my section.

"Congratulations!" the photographer said, gesturing toward the empty space around me. "Let's get a picture. Where's your family? Let's bring them in."

I looked at the empty chairs, then back at the lens.

"They couldn't make it," I said.

"Oh." The photographer lowered the camera slightly, shifting awkwardly. "Well, let's get a nice solo shot then. Hold up your certificate and give me a big smile!"

I grabbed my tote bag and walked straight out of the hall. I didn't stop until I reached the women's restroom near the exit. Pushing open the heavy wooden door, I slipped into the last stall and slid the deadbolt shut.

I sat on the closed toilet lid and let myself cry for three minutes. Ten years of building a life and holding its pieces together had been reduced to an errand too inconvenient to attend. I thought of the nights I helped Matt study for his real estate license and the extra shifts I took when Ollie needed therapy.

Then, I stopped. I wiped my face with a rough paper towel.

Instead, I opened my banking app. With a few quick taps, I canceled the automatic direct deposit that sent my paycheck into our joint account. I routed the funds entirely to a private account I opened a year ago.

Next, I opened my email. I searched for the contact card of the family lawyer I consulted three months ago, back when Matt first started spending his weekends helping Vanessa settle into the neighborhood.

"Please prepare the formal separation agreement," I typed. "I am ready to proceed."

I hit send.

The bathroom door squeaked open as someone else walked in. I stood up, smoothed the wrinkles from my skirt, and walked out.

The parking garage was dim and smelled of exhaust. Before unlocking my car, I pulled out my phone one last time. I opened a social media app.

Vanessa’s latest post sat at the very top of my feed, uploaded just ten minutes ago.

It was a group selfie. Matt stood right beside Vanessa, their shoulders pressed firmly together. In front of them, Ollie held up a large piece of neon poster board that read: BELLA'S FAMILY SUPPORT.

The caption below read: "Best crew for the biggest day."

I didn't hit the like button. I didn't take a screenshot to use as ammunition for an argument later tonight. I simply closed the app.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A new email notification popped up on the screen.

It was the lawyer.

"Received," the message read. "Do you need me to start drafting it today?"

I leaned against the cold frame of the car door. The distant sounds of traffic hummed from the street below.

"Yes," I typed.

I hit send, locking the screen and tossing the phone onto the empty seat.
