Chapter 2

CASSANDRA P. O. V

I stood in the warmth of the kitchen, flour dust swirling in the air like a ghost of my past. The golden brown cookies perched on the cooling rack, a spell of comfort in a world spiraling into chaos. Yet, no amount of chocolate chip or vanilla essence could mask the bitterness that coated my thoughts.

If I closed my eyes, I could still hear the growl—the deep, guttural sound that had rattled the very foundation of my being.

That night, the pain still fresh in my memory, had carved a schism between me and my own mate, Alpha Dean. I remembered the way he had turned away from me, opting instead to shield our servant, Winona, as if she were a precious artifact about to shatter.

It hurt to think of the betrayal, simmering beneath my heart like molten lava. Perhaps it was merely a mistake, a fleeting moment of cowardice—a wolf too afraid to confront a pack. Or perhaps it was more than that.

Days turned into a mundane blur, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. With every passing hour, I noticed the way Winona flicked her eyes toward Dean, her laughter a bloom of insincerity in the expansiveness of our dining room. Coldness prickled at my skin, and a frown settled deep in my brow.

The witching hour settled over us before I made my decision. A moonless night wrapped the world outside in shadows, concealing my intentions as I followed Winona outside. My heart thudded a furious rhythm in my chest, keeping time with the rising storm of my emotions.

I watched Winona as she slipped through the trees, padding softly against the mossy ground. The woods were thick with secrets and treachery, and tonight, I was the hunter.

I caught my breath when I reached the old cabin, thick with vines and memories that seeped from rotting wood. As I lingered in the shadows, my heart plummeted at the sight unveiled before me.

Dean stood there, his laugh slicing through the stillness like silver. And I saw him embraced Winona.

My heart crumbled into dust; anguish wrapped itself around me like a vice. I gripped the tree beside me, the feel of bark digging into my nails grounding me, but the torment in my chest drowned out any resolve.

They stepped inside the cabin and the door creaked softly, sealing my fate.

The following day, the ordeal clung to me like a shroud. I sat at the dining table, avoiding Dean’s gaze while he attempted to decipher the distance in my silence. I could almost hear the gears grinding in his head as he played the concerned mate.

"Cassandra, are you alright?" His voice cut into my quietude.

"I’m fine, just not hungry," I replied icily, my fork scraping against the plate in a symphony of defiance.

"Please, talk to me," he urged, his brow furrowing, betraying concern.

Talk? About what? About how his betrayal unearthed a monster within me, a part that craved vengeance? How the sawdust of our love felt more like splinters under my skin?

"No, Dean. I don’t think I’ll be needing to talk." I taunted, my voice thin and brittle.

Every word dripped with intention, and beneath my composure, a tempest brewed. I hated him for the ignorance he wore like a cloak, never once considering the storm I would unleash.

I was done being the dutiful mate, the broken soul. No more cookies. No more waiting by the window for a husband who had chosen his lust over my loyalty.

Late evening, I meticulously folded my clothes, my heart ached with every item I packed, a physical manifestation of the pain that had been gnawing at me for weeks.

Tonight, I was leaving.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the doorway, and I instinctively stiffened, my fingers tightening around the silk scarf I was folding. Dean stood there, his face etched with concern and his brow furrowed.

"Cassandra, what are you doing?" he began, his voice a low rumble.

"Packing," I said, my voice betraying none of the turmoil within. "I'm going to visit my family."

His eyes narrowed, "Your family? But you just saw them last month."

"I know, but I haven't seen them in a while," I lied, my voice steady, though my throat felt constricted. "I need to spend some time with them."

He stepped closer, his gaze piercing, searching. "Cassandra, you're not being truthful. What's going on?"

I swallowed, my heart pounding in my chest. "There's nothing going on, Dean. I just need some time away."

"I know you're upset," he said, his voice softening. "But please, talk to me. Tell me what's wrong."

"I'm fine," I insisted, my voice rising a notch. "I just need some space."

His gaze lingered on me, his expression unreadable. "Alright," he finally said, a hint of resignation in his voice. "But promise me you'll call when you get there."

"I will," I promised, my voice strained.

He turned and walked away, leaving me alone with my thoughts and my carefully packed belongings. As the door clicked shut, I let out a shaky breath, the weight of my lie crushing me. I couldn't bear to stay here, to be constantly reminded of his betrayal, of the way he had chosen to spend his nights with our servant, the woman who had been entrusted with our home.

I had to leave. For my own sanity, for my own dignity.

Chapter 3

CASSANDRA P. O. V

The storm outside was relentless, battering the windows of the manor with an anger that mirrored my own. My heart sank at the thought of being trapped here, in this house, with Alpha Dean and the chaos that had become my life. I had prepared for my voyage back home to visit my parents tomorrow. I wanted to escape, but I could already feel the weight of disappointment settling over me like an oppressive fog.

"What is it going to take for me to get out of here?" I muttered, pacing the expanse of the living room.

I hugged myself tightly, imagining the comfort of my parent’s home, their laughter, and the smell of home-cooked meals wafting in the air.

Also, I could hear Alpha Dean’s voice echoing from the meeting he had convened with his pack at the dining table. Words like “strategy” and “attack” filled the air, but all I could hear was the betrayal in his silence towards me. It was unbearable. I had turned a blind eye to his late-night escapades, and now that I knew the truth that he was entangled with Winona, my heart was shattered, layered beneath my fragile facade of patience.

As I retreated to my room, the soft glow of afternoon light streaming through the window caught my eye. My wedding picture, framed and dustier than I remembered, drew me in. I approached it, running my fingers over the image of us, two blissful souls, seemingly unaware of the storm brewing within.

"What went wrong?" I whispered to the room, the walls witnesses to my heartache. I had given Dean everything, my love, my trust, my very soul. Yet, it felt like standing before a mirror, cracking under the pressure of my gaze.

After multiple miscarriage, he had drifted further away, as if the void he created within me somehow widened the gap between us.

"Was I ever enough?" I had poured my being into this marriage, only to watch it disintegrate into bitter pieces.

Noon came and went, and the muffled sounds of voices filled the air as I made my way downstairs, feigning interest in their discussions. I couldn’t help but steal glances at Winona as she flitted around the dining table, her form a stark reminder of what I had lost. Their whispered exchanges were laced with casual intimacy, and it made my stomach churn.

"You’re quite incredible," Winona purred, her laughter soft yet flirtatious. Dean chuckled, the sound chilling me to my core. I rolled my eyes at the scene, folding my arms tightly across my chest. I yearned to escape, to have the courage to confront him, yet I could only stew in silence, waiting for the storm outside to match the tempest within.

After the meeting, I thought it a clever ruse to summon Winona to my room under the guise of needing help finding my missing necklace. A piece that Dean gifted me long ago, a token of his affection that was now an ironic reminder of the love he so carelessly tossed aside.

"Winona!" I called her name, keeping my tone steady as she entered my room, that annoying bounce in her step. "I’m missing my necklace. I was hoping you could help me find it."

"Of course, Cassandra!" she chirped, a snap in her tone as she glanced around.

But just then, my heart dropped. There it was glistening against her neck, the pendant swaying, mocking me.

"Why do you have my necklace?" I blurted out, my voice a mixture of disbelief and anger.

Her eyes widened slightly, and she raised her hands defensively. "Oh, this? I-I found it! Just lying around... I thought it was too beautiful to leave there."

"Beautiful?" The word dripped with sarcasm as I stepped closer, my frustration boiling over. "It’s mine, Winona. Give it back."

The silence stretched between us like a taut wire, both of us holding our ground. I fought the urge to claw it from her neck, to strip away her audacity. How had I not seen how she wore my treasures like trophies, paraded around flaunting the remnants of what once was ours?

As she moved, I saw the way her hand lingered on the pendant, the way her fingers traced the intricate details of the wolf's head. It was a possessive gesture, a silent claim to something that wasn't hers.

"You know, that necklace was a gift from Dean. It's very special to me." I said.

She didn't respond, her eyes fixed on the floor. I knew she understood. She knew it was mine.

The door creaked open and Alpha Dean entered the room, his scent a familiar mix of leather and musk.

"Cassandra, what are you doing?" he said, his voice a low rumble.

My heart sank. He knew. He knew Winona was wearing it. But why? Why would he let her wear it?

I stared at him, my anger burning like wildfire in my chest.

"You gave it to her, didn't you?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.

He didn't answer, his gaze fixed on the floor. I knew then, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone, that I was right. He had given it to her. My necklace, a symbol of our love, a promise of forever, was now a token of his betrayal.

Chapter 4

DEAN'S P. O. V

The cabin creaked around us, the midnight air thick with secrets as I traced my fingers over Winona's delicate skin. Her laughter danced between the silence of the trees outside, a melody that pulled at my innermost being.

I had stolen moments with her, fleeting hours away from my reality, the life of an alpha, the vows I had exchanged with Cassandra. But that night, under the warm glow of the fire and the shadows of the stars, I forgot who I was.

"Dean," Winona whispered, her hazel eyes sparkling, reflecting the flames as if they held all the answers I sought. "What’s this?"

I paused a nervous thrill sparking in my chest. In my hand, I clutched the goddess pendant, a piece of evidence of my betrayal. "Just something I wanted you to have," I replied, my heart pounding like it knew the truth.

Her fingers brushed against the pendant, and I saw a look of surprise transform into one of delight. "But Dean, this is—"

"Please." I cut her off, swallowing hard. I wasn't sure which was heavier, the weight of the necklace or the guilt of what I was doing. "I want you to have it. You deserve it."

At that moment, it felt like love. A disguise for betrayal. But reality can be a stubborn beast.

"Alpha Dean!" a voice cut through my memory, pulling me back to the present moment. I turned to see Cassandra’s sharp gaze boring into me. "Why did you give the necklace to Winona?"

I opened my mouth, the truth tearing at my insides, but the words died in my throat. "I didn’t give it to her. I just… threw it away. I was going to buy you a new one."

Cassandra shook her head, her body tensed, and I could see the resignation etched in her features. "You think I care about the necklace, Dean? You can’t cover this up. You can’t just throw away your mistakes."

Her words pierced through me, twisting the blade deeper. "Cassandra..."

But she turned her back to me and walked away, leaving me standing next to Winona, the guilt swelling in my chest. Her eyes avoided mine, a reflection of my shame.

The next morning, I woke up, and the cold touch of emptiness settled in beside me. I felt it right away. Cassandra wasn’t there. I reached for her, my instincts still fighting against the impending doom, but my hands met nothing but the cool linen sheets.

Panic surged, and I bolted out of bed. I pulled open the cabinet, searching for signs of her—clothes, trinkets, anything that would scream she was still there.

They were gone. All of them.

"No way..." I muttered breathlessly, stumbling out of the cabin.

I barked orders to my men and sent out search parties. I had to find her, and I had to make things right.

But just as I thought I could get ahead of this disaster, Winona stepped into my path, her expression ice-cold. "Stop, Alpha Dean."

"What do you mean, ‘stop’? Cassandra’s gone!" I shouted, anger bubbling beneath the surface, mingling with panic. "We need to find her!"

"Cassandra has decided to leave, Dean," she said, her tone devoid of warmth. "It’s what she wants. You can’t change that. And now we can do whatever we want."

My rage boiled over, and I stepped closer. "This is your fault! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have—"

"Wouldn’t have what?" she challenged, her strength unwavering. "Wouldn’t have realized that you’re not worthy of her? Do you think she doesn’t feel your betrayal? You brought this upon yourself."

Her words landed and festered, and I turned, running into the woods, each step tainted with regret.

My stomach dropped as I recalled the nights I had spent forgetting my vows—or so I thought. I was losing not just a mate but a woman who had devoted herself to loving me.

Finally, I broke through the trees, my heart nearly stopping at the sight of the carriage, its wheels about to roll away. Cassandra stood there, her posture resolute, the silhouette of strength enveloping her.

"Cassandra!" I called, desperation spilling from my lips as I rushed toward her. "Please, don’t go. I can’t let you leave like this."

She looked up, her expression hardening. "You had your chance, Dean. Trust is shattered. What’s left for us now?"

I stopped just in front of her, breathless, the weight of my mistakes pressing down on me. "I’ll make it right. I swear. Just… don’t leave. I didn’t realize what I had until it was almost gone."

Her face softened for a moment, but then the walls she had built around her heart reinforced themselves. "You should have thought about that before you gave away what was supposed to be mine."

The carriage began to roll, and my heart sank with every inch she moved away from me.

"Cassandra, wait!" I cried out, but she didn’t look back, her figure diminishing as the world between us grew vast and insurmountable.

I stood alone, haunted by my betrayal, realizing too late that what I had lost was far greater than any pendant.
