Chapter 1 of Hunted by the Possessive Alpha King

Haylee Harrington POV:

The werewolf was already behind me when the nightmare began.

Heat pressed against my skin. Beyond a veil of darkness, a few Moonwise lanterns glimmered between black pines. My arms hung uselessly at my sides until his arms closed around me from behind.

His chest pressed against my back—warm, solid, and foreign. I felt his heartbeat, slow and heavy, like a drum I was not meant to hear. His breath touched my neck, damp and close, carrying the scent of wet fur, pine resin, and something darker.

"What is your name?" he murmured. "Where do you belong?"

I tried to answer, but my throat would not open.

A low laugh touched my ear. "No answer? Then I will find out myself."

One hand caught my wrist. The other settled at my waist, its warmth a brand I could not escape. I tried to pull away, but my body remained fixed against him.

"You won't get away."

He said it softly, almost tenderly. That was what made the words frightening. They did not sound like a threat shouted in anger. They sounded like a promise already fulfilled.

I twisted my head, searching for a face, but the darkness broke apart before I could see it. Only his eyes remained—amber, watchful, carrying hunger on one side and a struggle for control on the other.

At this moment, the dream came to an end.

My eyes flew open.

Unlike the heat of the dream, the reality was bone-cold. A damp, mold-stained stone ceiling and a single torch met my gaze. As a human slave in the dungeon beneath Blackstone Keep, I lay on a thin pallet. I pushed myself up, straw scratched my palms, and cold stone pressed through the thin mattress.

Dozens of girls in ragged tunics crowded the cell. We had traded our names in whispers during the journey, but the keep would strip them away after inspection.

The air smelled of sweat, fear, and despair.

A werewolf guard of the Vorrath stood in the doorway. His inhuman, yellow eyes swept over us with the detached indifference of a farmer inspecting livestock.

"Get up, new stock," he grunted in the common tongue. "Matron Thorne wants to see you."

A wave of panicked shuffling filled the cell. Girls scrambled over one another, desperate not to be last.

The girl next to me, Cora, a quiet girl I had met on the slave cart who had shared her bread with me when the guards weren't watching, gave me a hand up. Her own was trembling.

I nodded my thanks, my heart hammering against my ribs. I forced myself to take a slow, steadying breath. From now on, I knew, any loss of control could be fatal.

We were shoved brutally into a single file line and herded down a frigid corridor.

A girl near the back caught her foot on a raised threshold and fell hard. The guard turned toward her. I started to look back, but Cora's nails dug into my sleeve.

"Don't," she breathed.

The girl scrambled up without waiting for help. No one offered any. The journey had taught us the rule quickly enough: one person in trouble could become three if anyone tried to help.

The hallway opened into a larger chamber. Matron Thorne—the woman who controlled every servant and slave in Blackstone Keep—stood waiting with a polished blackwood staff in hand.

Her gray-streaked hair was pulled tight, and her eyes were as sharp as shards of glass. The sight of her silenced every girl.

Her reputation had preceded her, whispered in terrified tones on the slave cart.

Her gray eyes scanned each of us, one by one. Her gaze passed over me without a flicker of recognition, as if I were just another particle of dust.

"Welcome to Blackstone Keep," she said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the silence with unquestionable authority. "From this day forward, you have no names. You have only numbers. Your past, your families, your dignity—they are all meaningless."

She paused, tapping the staff lightly against her palm. "Here, your only value is obedience. Learn the rules, and you live. Break the rules, and you die."

A girl named Tessa, her face pale with terror, began to sob quietly.

Matron Thorne's gaze snapped to her, devoid of any warmth. "Crying is a sign of weakness. Here, the weak die first. Take her out. One day without food."

Two guards immediately seized Tessa, dragging her away as she shrieked and begged for mercy.

The effect was instantaneous. A dead silence fell over the room, broken only by the sound of suppressed, ragged breaths.

I lowered my eyes, my hands clenched into fists inside my sleeves. My nails dug into my palms, the sharp sting of pain an anchor that pinned me to reality.

I forced myself to breathe slowly, my gaze moving past the girls to the chamber's edges. The guards stood by the door—two of them, one on each side of the entrance. Their hands were on their belts, where the keys hung. The door itself was iron-banded oak, reinforced with a crossbar that would take at least two people to lift.

We would not escape tonight. That much was clear.

But I could remember. The hallway we had come through. The direction of the torchlight. The number of steps it had taken from the cell door to here. I had worked on enough project timelines in my old life to know that the fastest way out was not to run—it was to map the building until a route revealed itself.

In that moment, I understood with chilling certainty. This was not a place where a human could expect mercy. This was a living hell. But I was alive, and I had time. Time enough to learn, and time enough to plan.

"You will undergo one week of protocol training," Matron Thorne continued, her voice unchanged. "You will learn how to serve the Vorrath nobility. After one week, the overseers will select you for your posts."

Her words were a stone dropped into still water, sending ripples of hope and terror through the assembled girls.

I understood. This was the first fork in the road of our new lives. And I had to survive it. I had to find a way to escape.

Matron Thorne's gaze swept over us one last time, finally landing on a collection of buckets and rags by the wall.

"The first lesson in your protocol training," she said coldly, "is absolute obedience. Now, make this place spotless."
