Chapter 1
On our honeymoon tour, my husband and I faced an earthquake.
I thought I was lucky to have booked a flight home, but then Ethan Parker snatched my passport and fled with my stepsister, Lily Foster.
Stranded on a foreign land, I saw her new post.
Lily: [Talking about clinginess, no one beats Ethan.]
An attached photo showed their hands intertwined.
In the chaos, someone stole my phone and cash. When aftershocks hit, I couldn't escape and got buried in a collapsed building.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back to the day of the first quake.
Seeing Ethan bolt from Lily's room, I didn't say a word, just quietly canceled his plane ticket.
If they loved each other so much, I'd let them go on and be a doomed couple.
As the hotel crumbled before my eyes, I realized I had returned to the day of the earthquake.
Ethan Parker and Lily Foster clung to each other in panic. I only watched with a smirk.
Details I'd missed in my past life now stood out clear as day.
He gently wiped her tears, patting her back to calm her. "Don't fret. I'm here with you."
He ignored the fact that Lily was my step-sister, while I stood right there staring.
Only when I cleared my throat did they jump apart.
"Claire? You're here too," Ethan stammered, trying to hide his guilt.
Lily, catching the anger in my eyes, teared up. "Ethan was just worried about you and mistook me for you."
Her pitiful act, combined with Ethan's innocent face, stirred up the hatred from my past life.
I slapped them both, snapping, "You think I'm dumb enough to buy your lies?"
Ethan grabbed my wrist. "Enough!"
Lily clutched her swollen cheek, sobbing, "I'm sorry. I overstepped."
Ethan looked at her, full of pity. "I just ran into Lily downstairs and tried to ease her fear. We're family. What's wrong with that? You're being unreasonable."
'Family? What a joke!' I scoffed inwardly.
Lily's father, Greg Foster, was a total freeloader who married into our family, and they had been around for only two years.
If not for my mother's sake, I wouldn't have even acknowledged them.
Yet Ethan had the nerve to call them family. He must be betting that I didn't know about their affairs. If I hadn't been reborn, I might have been fooled by their Oscar-worthy acting.
"Family, huh? Funny how you sneaked out of her room in the middle of the night," I sneered, squinting at them.
In my past life, when Ethan and I arrived in Lumora for our honeymoon, I found out Lily had secretly booked the same flight. She insisted on tagging along.
Before I could argue, she whined, "Why can you guys come and I can't? I booked my ticket a week before you did."
Her words shut me up.
My mom called, saying it wasn't safe for a young girl like Lily to travel alone. I gave in for her sake, letting Lily join us.
Back then, I was just too caught up in planning the trip to notice their shady behavior.
When the earthquake hit, Lumora descended into chaos. Return flights were nearly impossible to get.
Luckily, I'd booked our tickets home for the next day.
Ethan suggested I hand over my passport and other documents for safekeeping, saying I was too scatterbrained and might lose them in the mess. Trusting him, I gave him everything.
But as I waited at a safe spot for the shuttle, they vanished with my passport.
Chapter 2
While I frantically searched for them in the crowd, my phone pinged with a boarding notification.
It hit me then that Lily hadn't booked a return ticket at all. Ethan had taken mine to get her on the flight and left me behind.
Stranded, I saw Lily's new post.
[Speaking about clinginess, no one beats Ethan.]
An attached photo showed them kissing.
While I was stunned, someone snatched my phone and the last of my cash. When aftershocks hit, I couldn't dodge in time and got buried under rubble.
Back to reality, I glared at them but didn't call them out. Doom was waiting ahead for them.
Lumora, a small tourism-dependent country, couldn't handle natural disasters. After the quake, society fell apart. Kidnapping, looting, and other bad things happened everywhere.
Around us were all refugees. The collapsed hotel before us echoed with cries for help. It was a mess.
I felt lucky to have survived it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten this second chance.
The crowd around us was a mix of sobbing and shouting in different languages. Just like in my past life, Lily trembled and clung to Ethan.
She was all pitiful. "What should I do? I didn't book a flight back."
Ethan scrolled his phone, checking the situation. His brow furrowed as the ticket site showed no available flights. His eyes darted between me and Lily.
"Luckily, we've booked the return tickets early," he said to me. "I just checked. No flights are available now."
Having lived through this, I knew what he was up to.
Since moving into our house, Lily had been cozying up to my mother, Susan Bennett, and milking her for money.
For two years, every time I saw Lily, her face was bandaged. At my wedding, I finally saw her without the wraps.
Her face was strikingly similar to mine. Seeing her felt like seeing myself in college.
That was when I realized why she always stared at me. She claimed she just admired me, and her sweet, bubbly personality made me brush off my suspicions.
Now I knew the truth. She wanted to replace me.
Ethan planned to use our resemblance to get her on my flight with my passport.
Sure enough, he added, "Babe, give me your passport and other files. You're so forgetful. If you lose them, we're screwed."
When I didn't respond, he pushed, "If you lose your passport and miss this flight, getting home will be tough."
I frowned, nodding. "You're right. I..."
He looked at me hopefully, but I changed my tone. "I'll keep them safe."
Chapter 3
Ethan's face darkened.
Lily tugged his sleeve, shooting him a pleading look.
I pretended not to notice, slipping to a corner to cancel Ethan's ticket on my phone.
His account was still logged in on my device. I paid for the whole trip.
When we planned the honeymoon, he said he was too busy with work to go. I figured that he was just too cheap to spend on an overseas trip. So, I offered to cover all costs, and he agreed without hesitation.
Looking back, my taste in men was awful. Among all the well-off guys my friends introduced, I picked a nobody.
I thought he was honest, better than flashy rich guys. Turned out, he was just another jerk.
After handling the ticket, I stepped out.
Lily dropped her act. "I couldn't get a ticket. Can you give me yours?"
I grinned, "Sure."
Her face lit up. "You're the kindest person in the world."
I brushed it off, holding up my fingers. "Five grand. Pay up, and I'll sign over my ticket to you."
Her smile froze because she didn't have that kind of money. Sure, Susan had given her pocket money, but she had blown it all on her face.
Ethan complained, "Oh, come on. Lily is your sister, and five grand is nothing to you. Just the price of a handbag. Do you have to be so petty?"
Yes, I had to. A handbag wouldn't betray me, but they would.
Once they got the ticket, they'd stab me in the back right away.
"It's chaotic here," he went on, his face flushed. "Lily is young and pretty. What if some creep snatches her?"
Funny, he never worried about me like that in my past life.
Lily teared up. "I know you're looking out for me, but Claire has always been selfish. It's normal she won't give me her ticket."
She had the nerve to say that.
Greg and Susan weren't each other's first spouses, while Lily and I weren't raised together. There were no blood ties between us, and I had no obligations to help her.
Besides, what would I do if I gave my ticket to her? They didn't even consider it.
Ethan, usually a pushover, tried to play hero in front of her. He scoffed, "You're always at the shelter saving stray dogs. I thought you were kindhearted. Guess it's all for show."
I rolled my eyes. Sometimes, strays were much better than people.
He took my silence for weakness and grabbed my wrist. "Give Lily the ticket now."
I scratched my ear, ignoring him.
My phone chimed, and I grinned, "You're such a hero. Why don't you transfer your ticket to her?"
He froze, unable to refuse under her hopeful gaze.
I nodded at his phone.
He checked it and screamed, "What the hell? Why did you cancel my ticket?"
