Chapter 1
On the eve of the middle school exam, my son suffered a sudden myocardial infarction due to extreme stress and was rushed to the hospital.
I was highly anxious outside the rescue room, and I called my wife.
However, the provoking voice of my wife's dream boy came from the other end of the phone. "Mr. Richards, my pet dog Kat was hit by a car, and she is taking care of Kat for me. Please do not disturb her!"
I didn't care about his provocation, and I yelled on the phone, telling her that our son's life was in danger.
But her angry roar came from the phone. "Ben, I've had enough of you! Please stop using our son as an excuse for your jealousy!"
The light in the emergency room went out, and the doctor came out with a gloomy face, saying to me, "I'm sorry, we did our best."
I was in great pain and sent her a message: [Divorce.]
She quickly replied: [As you wish!]
My heart was completely dead!
I, heartbroken, handled my son's funeral alone, during which I did not inform her or any of her family members.
Until my son came out of the crematorium, leaving only an urn, I couldn't accept all of this.
Two days ago, my son was still looking forward to getting into a well-known high school.
He was so innocent and so adorable. His future was originally full of infinite possibilities.
But now, all he left was a handful of ashes in the urn.
Thinking of my son's every little thing, I couldn't control my emotions and couldn't help but burst into tears.
Just as I was about to leave the crematorium with my son's urn, Reeva Bell called. "How did our son's exam go? He didn't perform well enough due to nervousness, did he?"
My hand holding the urn couldn't help but tremble. "You should go find him yourself, and ask him in person!"
"Look at you! Still jealous?"
Reeva explained nonchalantly. "At that time, Lewis's pet dog was hit by a car. Do you know how sad he was?
"In that situation, if I didn't accompany him, he would definitely be upset.
"Our son has you to accompany him, but he can't do without me!"
I was listening to Reeva's explanation.
One word "Heartless!" suddenly appeared in my mind.
How shameless a woman must be to make her affair sound so righteous!?
Even her son, in her eyes, was not as important as a pet dog!
"Enough!"
I couldn't stand Reeva's voice anymore. I just wanted to deal with my son's ashes as soon as possible to let him rest in peace. I said indifferently, "Except for the divorce, please don't bother me anymore!"
Reeva was silent for a moment on the phone; she seemed very unhappy. "I agree to the divorce! But today is my mother's birthday, and our son's exam is also over. No matter what, you have to show me some respect. Bring our son over! Don't embarrass me!"
Looking at the urn in my arms and thinking about the ugly faces of Reeva's family, I agreed.
"Okay, I will definitely bring our son!"
I got to know Reeva in high school.
At that time, my grades were consistently first in the class, and Reeva's exam scores were always behind me, although sometimes just one point behind.
But even if it was only one point, she could only rank second.
She was competitive and unwilling to be second, so she used many methods against me.
However, at that time, I knew my family was poor, and I only had one way out, which was to get into a prestigious university.
No matter what means she used to tempt me, I was unmoved.
She got all helpless and ended up using herself as bait to pull off some beauty trick on me.
After self-study in the evening, she asked me to meet her on the school playground and asked me to be her boyfriend.
This trick really worked. I lost myself in front of her, and it wasn't until after the college entrance examination that she confessed the truth to me.
But she said she also played the part and really fell in love with me.
We experienced four years of sweet love in college. On the day of graduation, she was pregnant, and we chose to get married.
However, similar to numerous other couples, the time following our marriage was not always as blissful as our love-struck period.
The gap in our family backgrounds was just too huge.
She was, like, a super rich heiress, and my family was just some average small-town crew.
The vast difference in family background led to haughtiness and bias among family members.
Although we didn't care at first because of our honeymoon period, time diluted everything.
As our child grew day by day and our careers changed, especially after she inherited the family business and became the CEO, our relationship became influenced. It was no longer the same as before.
With the appearance of her dream boy, Lewis Carter, our relationship was almost entirely nonexistent.
The only thing that kept us connected was our son.
But now, our son was dead!
I no longer had any worries or restraints!
I arrived at the Bell family's villa.
They were all gathered together, laughing and chatting. The man sitting next to Reeva was no longer me but another man.
The Bell family seemed to like him very much. They were very polite to him. My sister-in-law, who was disdainful towards me, was the most enthusiastic.
I was holding the urn covered with a cloth, and as soon as I walked into the hall, I heard their laughter.
Layla Bell, Reeva's mother, said, "My grandson has always had good grades. It's certain that he will be accepted into the best high school in our city this year."
"Hahaha..."
Reeva proudly said, "After all, he is of our Bell family bloodline, inheriting my and the Bell family's excellent genes. His exam results will definitely not be bad!"
Lewis, who was seated on the side, chuckled. "Arlo IS such a pleasant child. He excels in school and is well-mannered and level-headed. If only I could have a child like him, I would wake up with a smile on my face."
Reeva's sister jokingly and seriously said, "Lewis, since you like Arlo so much, why don't you become his stepfather? That would be perfect, right? My eldest sister probably wouldn't object."
I walked in, holding the urn. As soon as they saw me, the laughter in the room suddenly stopped.
Layla and Reeva's sister were full of disgust and contempt, as if I were a mosquito in the summer, disturbing their sweet dreams...
Chapter 2
Seeing that I came alone, they didn't care about what I was holding.
They didn't even care about my arrival.
Reeva, with a dark face, asked me, "Why did you come alone?"
"What else?"
I stared indifferently at Reeva. "Do you expect me to bring a gigolo like you do, to wish your mother a happy birthday?"
"Ben!"
My words just made Reeva upset. She gave me a serious look and told me, "I've already reminded you, bring our son to sincerely wish my mother a happy birthday. Don't make me feel embarrassed! And now you're giving me a blank expression, you're purposely trying to make me feel uncomfortable, right?"
Facing Reeva's anger, I laughed. "You shameless person. Do you know what embarrassment is?"
"Ben, have you had enough? I am Arlo's mother!"
Reeva yelled at me with a cold face.
Mother?
Was she even qualified to call herself that?
Did she know the weight of that word?
She had no idea!
I looked indifferently at Reeva, my heart aching.
As a woman, she disregarded her family and children, openly mingling with her gigolo all day, and for a dog, she didn't care about her son's life or death!
Even though our son had been dead for two days, she still didn't know!
She was not worthy!
She was really not fit to be a mother!
I looked indifferently at Reeva and said word by word, "You are not qualified to be Arlo's mother!"
The people of the Bell family were shocked to see me retort like this.
In the past, I was too accommodating to Reeva for the sake of this family.
As a result, in their eyes, I was a weak and submissive lamb at their mercy.
But now our son was gone.
My last shred of nostalgia no longer existed. I no longer needed to endure!
"Ben, as a man, how can you be so petty?"
Reeva's dream boy, Lewis, took the opportunity to mock me, saying, "You knew that Mrs. Bell likes Arlo the most.
"But you are so jealous of me that you deliberately didn't let Arlo attend Mrs. Bell's birthday.
"Your behavior is really despicable!
"No wonder even Reeva thinks you're embarrassing!"
His words immediately drew more disgusted glances from the Bell family towards me.
"Hmph!"
Reeva's mother, with a blue face, snorted indifferently. "A bad apple spoils the whole barrel.
"After Arlo's middle school graduation, he will face the more crucial college entrance examination.
"If we continue to let Arlo stay with such a morally inferior person, it will definitely hold him back!
"I think it's better to have Arlo live with me in the future. Unless it's something important, don't let Arlo meet him again to avoid being led astray!"
Reeva's sister also said with contempt, "Exactly, look at Lewis. He knew it was my mother's birthday and came early in the morning to help around the house. He's so considerate.
"And you, as the son-in-law of the Bell family, arrived late on such an important day.
"And you even put on a deadpan face as soon as you walked in the door. Isn't that too much?
"I think you are deliberately trying to ruin my mother's birthday!
"It seems to me that Lewis is the son-in-law of our Bell family, and you are just a pile of trash!"
Hearing these words, I felt a chill in my heart.
After being married for so many years, I knew that my family background could not match the Bell family. I was always caring for Reeva's mother and was the first to rush to any family matter.
However, my efforts were not met with approval from the Bell family but with more ruthless ridicule.
Layla was dissatisfied with me as her son-in-law, and Reeva's sister always looked down on me.
She couldn't wait to announce a change of brother-in-law on the spot!
After all these years of giving, what I got was this indifference and ridicule. I was too naive at the beginning!
I looked indifferently at Reeva's mother and sister and said, "Since you want to change me, I might as well take this opportunity to announce that I'm divorcing Reeva to fulfill your wishes!"
"Ben, have you gone mad enough!?"
Reeva banged the table and yelled, "Why do you have to make a scene here and ruin my mother's birthday? Can't you just voice your complaints at home?"
"So what?" I looked directly at Reeva and said, "I'm not afraid to tell you that I came here today to embarrass you!"
"You... you bastard!" Reeva completely exploded, pointing at me and yelling, "I order you to bring my son over right now, and then get out of here. You're not welcome here anymore!"
"Hehe..."
I gave a dry smile and put the urn I was holding on the table. "Your son is here!"
"Huh?" Reeva looked at me in confusion, then at the urn covered with cloth. "Ben, don't joke with me. Where is my son?"
Layla also looked around and then outside the door. "Where is Arlo? Is he hiding outside?"
Seeing them looking around, I directly lifted the cloth on the urn. "You don't need to look anymore. Arlo is here!"
With a rustle...
As I lifted the cloth and the urn appeared, everyone's faces changed dramatically...
