Chapter 1 of His Wish Was for a New Mom

“Leo, step away from the table.”

“No.” My seven-year-old son planted his sneakers in the freshly cut grass and stared straight at me.

Then he swung one leg back and kicked the birthday cake I had spent nine hours making.

The ceramic platter shattered on the patio. Vanilla frosting—smooth, pale, and free of the textures that made him gag—splattered across the stones and the toes of my beige wedges.

Fifty guests fell silent. Most were partners and clients from my husband’s architecture firm, people who knew me as Michael Mills’s quiet wife, the woman who remembered everyone’s dietary restrictions and never appeared in company photographs. Even the jazz drifting from the outdoor speakers seemed suddenly too loud.

“Oops,” Leo said, folding his arms over his superhero shirt.

Before I could answer, Chloe Adams swept through the crowd carrying a towering neon-blue cake from an expensive bakery. Fondant superheroes clung to its sides, and the artificial dye practically glowed in the afternoon sun.

“I brought the real party.” Michael’s lead interior designer set it in the space my cake had occupied. “Sugar and superheroes, exactly what the birthday boy ordered.”

“Take it back to your car, Chloe.”

Her smile faltered. “Excuse me?”

“Leo can’t eat it. Artificial dyes trigger severe gastrointestinal pain and night terrors for him. We discussed this on Tuesday.”

She smoothed the skirt of her silk dress. “It’s his seventh birthday, Elena. Let him live a little.”

“This isn’t a parenting philosophy. It’s in his medical care plan.”

“He looks perfectly healthy to me.” She winked at Leo and lifted the silver cake knife. “Who wants the blue corner?”

“Me!” Leo lunged for a fistful of frosting.

I caught his wrist before his fingers touched it. “You know what this does to your stomach.”

“Let go!” He tore free and slapped my hand.

Chloe moved between us as though protecting him. “Don’t grab him like that. You’re frightening him.”

“Back away from my son.”

Instead, she crouched beside him. The conspiratorial smile she gave him was one I had seen too often during the six months since Michael hired her. Chloe made rules sound cruel and indulgence sound like love. Michael laughed whenever she contradicted me.

Leo snatched the wireless microphone from the karaoke stand. Feedback shrieked through the speakers.

“I hate your boring rules!” His voice boomed across the lawn. He pointed at Chloe with a frosting-smeared finger. “I wish Chloe was my real mom. She lets me have fun!”

My breath stopped, but I refused to give the watching crowd the spectacle they wanted.

“Put down the microphone and apologize.”

“No. Go away!”

I turned toward the outdoor bar. “Michael, handle this.”

My husband set down his scotch and strolled over. I expected him to take the microphone, reinforce the limits we had agreed on with Leo’s occupational therapist, and remind our son that anger did not excuse cruelty.

Instead, Michael settled a hand on Chloe’s shoulder. His thumb moved once across the silk.

“Kids gravitate toward the fun parent,” he said, grinning at his clients. “Can’t blame the boy for knowing what he wants.”

A few men offered uneasy laughs.

“Do not undermine me right now,” I said.

“Nobody is undermining you. You spent all night making a cake that tastes like packing foam. Let him have some sugar.”

“You know what happens afterward.”

“I’ll handle the night terrors,” Chloe offered brightly. “I’m great with children.”

“You are not handling my son.”

Michael sighed. “There it is—the overreaction. If your feelings are hurt, take a minute inside. Don’t ruin the party for everyone else.”

Something in me became perfectly still.

Near the back of the crowd, one of Michael’s clients quietly pulled her daughter away from the blue cake. She had read the ingredient card I placed beside the desserts, even if my husband had not. Two servers exchanged uncertain looks, waiting to see whose instructions mattered in my own home. Michael lifted the cake knife and handed it to Chloe.

“Do the honors,” he said.

Chloe cut the first slice as though she were already the hostess. Leo cheered, and Michael basked in the approval he had purchased with our son’s health.

For seven years, I had designed our lives around Leo’s needs. I had cataloged safe fabrics, foods, sounds, and calming techniques in a binder Michael had never opened. I had paused my research career because Michael said one of us needed to be available. At night, after Leo slept, I built environmental models that Michael presented to clients as innovations from his firm.

He had called that arrangement a partnership.

Now he was touching another woman while our son publicly rejected me, and he was worried about the party.

I picked up the microphone Leo had dropped.

“The blue cake contains ingredients listed on Leo’s restriction sheet,” I told the guests. “Michael has decided to serve it anyway. Anyone allowing their child to eat it does so with that knowledge.”

Michael’s smile hardened. “Put the microphone down.”

I did. Then I walked into the house.

In the kitchen, I washed frosting from my hands and opened the household laptop. The folder marked MILLSTONE ECO-ROOF contained seven years of my equations, plant-survival data, and soil formulas. My name appeared on every original research file. Michael had stripped it from every client presentation.

I sent the access revocation I had drafted three months earlier to my patent attorney. Next, I emailed my family lawyer one sentence: File the separation papers.

Both drafts had existed since Michael presented my drought model to the council as “a Mills innovation” and accepted applause without looking at me. I had delayed sending them because leaving would disrupt Leo’s routines. Now I understood that preserving a routine built on my erasure was teaching my son the wrong lesson.

Upstairs, I packed clothes, my research drives, and the cedar cases holding my rare seed bank. I left the jewelry Michael had bought and took the field notebooks he had mocked.

When I came down, the party had resumed. Through the windows, I watched Chloe feed Leo a forkful of blue frosting while Michael raised his glass.

Leo looked directly at me and opened his mouth for another bite.

I carried the first cedar case to my car.

For once, I would let Michael live with the choice he had made.
