Chapter 2

"Look at this," Thea said, her voice laced with a five-year-old's version of contempt. She turned her tablet towards her twin brother, Leo.

On the screen, a glossy photo showed Emmett Kramer smiling, his arm wrapped possessively around a woman in a glittering evening gown. The headline read: "Kramer Industries CEO Emmett Kramer and Fiancée Jasmine Vance Dazzle at the Met."

Thea stirred her apple juice with a tiny spoon, the clinking sound sharp in the quiet VIP lounge. "That's the woman who made Mommy sad for five years."

Leo adjusted a pair of non-prescription glasses on his nose-an accessory he insisted helped him think. He didn't look at the photo. Instead, he swiped his own screen to display a series of fragmented data files.

"Based on the corrupted data I recovered from Mom's old cloud backup and cross-referencing public marriage registries, I can confirm with 99.8% certainty that Emmett Kramer is our biological father," he stated, his tone as clinical as a medical report.

Thea snorted. "A deadbeat dad. He doesn't count."

Leo's screen changed again, now showing a complex schematic of the Kramer Industries corporate network. Red circles highlighted several points of entry. "I've already identified multiple vulnerabilities in their firewall."

Thea's eyes lit up. "Ready to give him a little welcome-back present?"

Leo shook his head, his expression serious. "Not yet. A premature attack would be emotionally satisfying but strategically unsound. We need more information. Specifically, about our missing sister."

Thea's playful malice vanished, replaced by a shadow of sorrow. They knew. They had always known they were supposed to be three. Their mother never spoke of it, but they had pieced it together from overheard whispers and one tear-stained baby photo she kept hidden in her jewelry box. The official story was that the third baby had been "lost." They didn't believe it.

The lounge door opened, and Katherine walked in. The fatigue of a long, difficult surgery was etched around her eyes, but it melted away the moment she saw her children. A soft, genuine smile lit up her face.

"Mommy!" Thea instantly dropped her tablet onto the couch cushion, screen-down, and launched herself into her mother's arms. "Was the surgery hard?"

Leo calmly closed his program and set his tablet aside, taking Katherine's coat like a small gentleman. "You look tired, Mom."

Katherine hugged them both tightly, burying her face in their hair. "It went well. Are my geniuses hungry? Let's go home."

Their godmother and Katherine's best friend, Sophia Reynolds, drove them back to their new apartment. Sophia glanced at Katherine in the rearview mirror, her brow furrowed with worry.

"Are you sure about this, Kate? Staying in New York? This city is a graveyard of bad memories for you."

Katherine stared out the window at the blurred city lights, her reflection a pale ghost against the glass. "I have to find her, Soph. I know she's here."

In the back seat, Leo and Thea exchanged a silent, knowing look.

Once they were home, Katherine went to take a long, hot shower to wash away the hospital's sterile scent and the day's stress. The moment the bathroom door clicked shut, the twins scurried into their shared bedroom. It was more of a command center than a child's room, with multiple monitors and a server humming quietly in the corner.

Thea pulled up a chair. "Okay, I did a deep dive on Jasmine Vance's social media. She's been very publicly playing the role of doting aunt to a little girl."

Leo's fingers flew across his keyboard. He pulled up dozens of photos from Instagram, society pages, and paparazzi sites. In every one, Jasmine was holding the hand of a small, frail-looking girl with big, sad eyes. The girl was always dressed in expensive, doll-like clothes, but her head was perpetually bowed, her posture timid.

"Zoom in," Thea commanded. "Look at her profile, Leo. She looks... she looks like me."

Leo's breath hitched. He ran a facial recognition program he'd written himself, comparing the girl's photo to a candid shot of Thea. The progress bar filled.

The result flashed on the screen in green letters: MATCH PROBABILITY: 98.7%.

Thea clenched her small fists, her knuckles white. "It's her. It's Chloe. Our sister."

Leo's expression turned colder than she had ever seen it. "And Jasmine Vance is using her as a prop. A ticket into the Kramer family."

Fire ignited in Thea's eyes. "She's using our sister. I'm going to make her life a living hell."

Leo was already typing again, a new plan forming. "Phase one: confirm Chloe's living conditions and emotional state. Phase two: establish contact. Phase three: extraction."

Thea added her own final step. "Phase four: burn Jasmine Vance and our deadbeat dad to the ground."

Leo nodded grimly. "Plan initiated. I'm setting up a full-spectrum surveillance net on all Kramer-related communications."

Thea, meanwhile, opened a different window. It was a list of the most exclusive children's enrichment classes in Manhattan-ballet, art, music, equestrian sports. "Jasmine is a social climber. She'll parade Chloe around places like these to show what a good 'mother' she is."

She pointed to one. "The Dalton School's early arts program. Jasmine's a patron. It's our best shot at getting close."

The two children looked at each other. In that moment, an alliance of blood, love, and vengeance was forged.

When Katherine emerged from her shower, wrapped in a fluffy robe, she peeked into the twins' room. The door was slightly ajar, and she could see them tucked into their beds, seemingly fast asleep. A wave of love washed over her. They were her entire world.

She had no idea that her world was about to get a whole lot bigger, and a whole lot more complicated, thanks to the two small geniuses pretending to be asleep.

Chapter 3

The next morning, Katherine sat across from Julian Foster in his spacious office, a cup of coffee warming her hands. The adrenaline from the previous night's surgery had faded, leaving a deep-seated weariness in its place.

Julian, who had been her senior resident when she was just a wide-eyed intern, studied her face with concern. "You okay, Kate? Being back in New York... is it what you expected?"

Katherine's gaze drifted to the window, to the sprawling city below. "I didn't come back for the job, Julian. You know that." She paused, then finally gave voice to the secret she had held for five long years. "I'm here to find my third child."

Julian's coffee cup stopped halfway to his lips. "Third? Katherine, I thought..."

A raw, ancient pain flickered in her eyes. "I was pregnant with triplets. When I gave birth, it was premature, chaotic. The hospital in Philadelphia told me one of them... a girl... had complications and didn't survive."

She reached into her wallet and pulled out a tiny, worn photograph of a newborn, impossibly small, wrapped in a pink hospital blanket. "They never let me see her. They said it would be too traumatic. But I never believed them. I have this feeling, Julian, a mother's instinct. She's alive. And she's here, in this city."

Julian looked from the photo to the fierce conviction in Katherine's eyes. He nodded slowly, his voice firm. "I understand. Anything you need-hospital records, private investigators, anything-it's yours. We'll find her."

His words were a comfort, a small anchor in her turbulent world. But before she could thank him, the private line on his desk buzzed. He answered it, his expression shifting from friendly concern to professional seriousness.

"Dr. Foster's office."

Katherine watched as his eyes widened slightly. He listened for a long moment, his gaze flicking over to her.

The call was from a man named Ryan Hayes, executive assistant to the CEO of Kramer Industries. His tone was polite but carried the unmistakable weight of money and power.

"Dr. Foster," the voice on the phone said, "Mr. Emmett Kramer would like to retain Dr. Aella's services for his grandfather, Mr. Harrison Kramer. It's a highly complex cardiac case. Price is not an object."

Julian glanced at Katherine. She was staring down at the tiny photo in her hand, lost in her own world, not paying attention to the call.

He covered the receiver with his palm and mouthed two words to her: "The Kramers."

Katherine's body went rigid. The coffee cup trembled in her hands, hot liquid sloshing over the rim and onto her fingers. She barely felt the burn. The name was a physical blow, knocking the air from her lungs.

Julian saw her reaction and immediately understood. He turned back to the phone, his voice cool and unwavering. "I'm very sorry, Mr. Hayes. Dr. Aella's surgical schedule is booked for the foreseeable future. She does not accept private consultations."

There was a pause on the other end. Ryan Hayes was not used to being told no. "Dr. Foster, perhaps you misunderstand. We are prepared to offer any amount. Shall we start at ten million dollars?"

"This is not about money," Julian replied, his tone firm. "Dr. Aella has her principles. The answer is no."

Another silence, this one colder. "We'll be in touch," Ryan Hayes said, and the line went dead.

Julian hung up the phone and looked at Katherine, whose face was now pale as chalk. "Are you alright?"

She took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing the panic down. "I'm fine. Thank you, Julian. For that."

She knew what this meant. Emmett was looking for her. Not for Katherine Perry, the wife he had discarded, but for Dr. Aella, the surgeon he needed. The irony was a bitter pill in her throat. It also meant her time was running out.

"I have to go," she said, standing up abruptly. "I can't let them see me here."

"Go," Julian said, nodding. "I'll handle them. But be warned, Kate. The Kramers don't give up easily."

Katherine hurried out of the office, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had to find Chloe, and then she had to disappear before her past and present collided in a way that could destroy everything.

In his office on the 80th floor of the Kramer Industries tower, Emmett listened to Ryan Hayes's report, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl.

"She refused?" Emmett asked, his voice dangerously quiet. "A doctor refused the Kramer family?"

"Her representative, the Chief of Surgery at St. Ambrose, was quite adamant, sir," Ryan said. "He claims Dr. Aella is notoriously private, never makes public appearances."

The refusal, the mystery, it didn't just annoy Emmett; it ignited his predatory instinct. He was a man who got what he wanted. Always.

"The more mysterious she is, the more I want to see who's behind the mask," he said, rising from his desk and grabbing his suit jacket.

"Get the car," he commanded Ryan. "We're going to St. Ambrose. There isn't a door in this city that money and power can't open."

As the elevator descended, an image of Katherine's face flashed in his mind-the way she had looked that last morning, calm and defiant. He shook his head, annoyed at the intrusion. That chapter was closed.

He had no way of knowing that the person he was about to move heaven and earth to find was the very woman he was trying so desperately to forget.
